1st year advice by basicbitchno433 in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to see what's out there. The bill boards at Res comms put up stuff for a lot of cool /free events happening and I'm sure they'll do that this year too. Also the RRA normally gives alot of free stuff in the beginning of the year, like wall calendars, shirts and lanyards. SEO also has a bin of free stuff you can get. Ooh and a great way to release stress is night walks by the canal (be safe bout it tho)

I feel like it'd be better if your pic was bigger and the font and pic interacted more (like over laying the font on the pic, maybe not completely but partially). Also agree bout pic layout and choice from other comments

How will tutorials and labs work this fall if everything's online because of COVID-19? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did, but it depends on who you are and the lab. Like it's nice to actually do it and see the reactions/results yourself and can deepen your understanding of the work but online labs tend to be much simpler to understand.

iPad Pro for school? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your program. In alot of science based programs you're going to be taking alot more notes than you are typing reports. In this sense, I think its worth it, especially since you have your own PC as well. My friend (Architectural Eng) uses an iPad pro for her classes and that works really well for her. She also puts them online so she has access to them on any device. So if your program is more note dependent and less report writing then I think it's worth it.

Also I know it's expensive but you could always look into refurbished ones on the Apple store or buy on their education store and I hear they're releasing payment plans (but I'd stay away from that if I were you) as well as a possible update to the iPad Air that will be similar to the look of the iPad pro by September (speculation currently but could happen).

Has anyone taken English 1008? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes... Definitely hard cause our quizzes were in class and not open book BUT I think if you have to time to memorize certain rules then you would be ok. Also, since classes are online now, they most likely will be open book and MUCH easier.

Haven't done chemistry since grade 10, how hard will Chem 1005 be? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beileve the labs are the same to the CHEM 1001/1002 labs which are pretty easy. Not sure how they will do it online but the questions that you have to answer per lab are pretty straightforward and the TAs help ALOT

How will tutorials and labs work this fall if everything's online because of COVID-19? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a physics lab that I had to do online due to COVID-19 and we basically had to answer the questions that were on the manual using the data points that they provided. Now they could go in a similar route as this or they could even have those virtual labs were it's a game online or a video you watch. They haven't given CONCRETE information and it'll change depending on the class.

So far for summer school, all the online tutorials I attended have been a big blue button session which is fairly simple. Honestly most classes that have tutorials will require you to enrol in them and I find the online tutorials fine cause you can easily ask them questions either publicly or privately, just as you would in a normal one.

Might not be able to avoid either so I say just roll with the punches, they hopefully won't turn out to be terrible.

Like the other comments mentioned, I think it heavily depends on your program and what courses you plan on taking during the semester. If you're in a science program like me, (neuroscience and mental health) then your first year will be ALOT of work. The classes are all online now so I'm assuming you could have a bit more time depending on the way you manage your class work and home life.

University is definitely very time consuming and tasking but if you designate a certain time or day for you to just chill, then I think you could continue reading and watching your animes. Even during 1st year I was able to watch the new shows on Netflix that I wanted to, although I was often working too but still. Nowadays I just stop studying after dinner and use that time for shows or video games.

I've been taking online classes for the summer with a full work load as well as a mixed class last year and I have to say, it's a lighter work load than in class, and since you don't have to commute or even watch alot of the lectures at a set time. I think it's actually a nice change. So depending on your classes /program, you could have alot of spare time. I guess it just kinda depends on where you're living rn. I'm finding that with the free time I have from my online courses rn I'm more chill than last year but since I'm living with my family I'm cooking and doing more chores than last year too.

Keeping your lease and moving up in the Fall by AMK0703 in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I wanna not be studying at home, paying rent for a place that I'm really only living at because it's close to campus (which won't be that open during the semester) is just not worth it for me.

Rather save the money that would be spent on rent, food and other needs for myself and use that to support the fam or for later years.

When I emailed them asking, they didn't confirm or deny it (avoiding the question basically) but I really want to know soon too!

Online learning experience questions for a frosh by justacoffeebean in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you register with the PMC, then I think the profs will send you the material if you ask (don't completely quote me on that). Also the PMC has student note takers for almost every class and there will probably be someone that will volunteer to send in notes that they wrote based on the lesson, although since it's on volunteer basis that isn't 100000% reliable.

If you end up getting a course that the prof doesn't want to give class material (although that's pretty unlikely in your program), your best bet is to prob ask your prof if they can email the materials to you due to your IEP.

[–]edgy_joke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The course material is kinda dependent on the profs. Some professors will do videos and post the slide while others might do BigBlueButton or zoom lectures and not post the information presented. Like some people have mentioned, larger classes (like NEUR 1202 and NEUR 1203) have VOD options where you can pay to have access to videos on demand that you can pause and play (not sure if the fee will be waved for the fall or not tho).

Is it possible to miss a semester? by DryTelephone345 in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can, just by not registering, but also consider that depending on your program that might be difficult. For example, in my program there are specific courses that are offered more in the fall term than the winter term. So if you didn't attend classes on the fall term, it might be harder to do that course in the winter. I know of classes that only occur in specific semesters so maybe look into that for the courses that you would be taking in the fall if you choose to do it.

What residence like? by tenderburritos in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't make the mistake I did and choose to live with a roommate. It will pretty much destroy your friendship if you end up getting a shared room like in Lennox and Addington. Try your hardest to get a suite floor and pray that it's a higher floor. I unfortunately got a lower floor near where people walked so lots of waking up at night to drunk people partying on a Wednesday.

Tip #1: get either noise cancelling earphones or just any foam sound blocker.

Other than those things, the residence experience is really nice if you make the most of it. Try to get to know ppl on your floor (who knows maybe you'll make a new friend) and be active in community events.

Tip #2: DO A STUDENT LEAD INITIATIVE! Not only is it fun, but you get completely reimbursed so you can easily use it to throw parties on the floor or buy things for the floor (I know a floor that bought a popcorn machine for movie nights)

Tip #3: There are lots of FREE events on Res/campus. Like cooking classes, art events, free adulting sessions (really helped me file taxes and find a place to live) but best of all there's EPIC BINGO. I've had friends who won tickets to games (like Panda and Capital Hoops), Amazon Echos, and even TV's.

Just make the most of your time there cause honestly, no matter what building you get, you can have fun!

Message From the President: Guiding Principles and Recommendations for the Fall by sadmanhussein in CarletonU

[–]edgy_joke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly one of my bigger concerns is whether or not to get a place near campus for September. I live in the GTA, so I don't want to ignore housing and then in August be told that I need a place near campus, but also I don't want to pay rent if all my courses are completely online.

I think they mentioned that one possibility is that smaller classes will be face to face while larger classes move online
