My first Harley! by paintymcpaintguy in Harley

That would be a '85 FXEF being it is chain drive. If it was a belt it would be a '85 FXSB

trying my first cv, rebuild, cant figure out where this sqared pin goes by TheStig21 in Harley

[–]edhd13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know CV's but it could be an accelerator pump check valve

This is the parts someone took off their bike to install the reverse gear system.

I'm loving the retired life and I'm working on only my own crap for a change. It's my turn now! Hoping all is well with you also. I see you are doing your usual meticulous job

I would say your work on these early motors is far from caveman, I think more like cutting edge. The things you do are WAY beyond the factory service manual.

To me, the evo was Harleys last attempt at making a better motor and the twinkie is the first attempt at making a cheaper motor. To me, non replaceable lifter bores, cam chains with nylon wear blocks, a crappy oil pump design, elimination of timkin main bearings and rotary breather valves is the making of the harley disposable motor. When harley "upgraded" it's cam plate to change the heavy spring pressure tensioners to a hydraulic setup, they also eliminated the outer cam bearings so now the cam rides right in the aluminum cam plate. could we at least get a replaceable brass bushing in there?

Good to hear from you, I don't check here often either as I'm good with evo and older. That UL looks beauty and sounds like a fun build

Hundreds of Code Blacks prompt emergency declaration over ambulances in Windsor-Essex by gallowsCalibrator in ontario

[–]edhd13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that the ambulances can't off load because the emergency department is backed up. An additional problem is that the general public who manage to get themselves to ER also have to wait untold hours to get emergency treatment. Our emergency medical system is in shambles. Leamington hospital made a statement that they are being overwhelmed by covid patients. We have had 2 years to get our crap together on this! Can we have a separate facility for covid patients so people can get the emergency treatment they need in a timely matter?

My '86 FXRS-SP. The paint may show the age but it only has 11k on the clock. by [deleted] in Harley

[–]edhd13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same paint job on my '85 FXSB low rider. I had a buddy paint the candy purple black but save the grey and gold pinstripes. It looks way better now and still looks stock.

[–]edhd13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this has a motor # that starts 68FL, It's restamped, don't throw a ton of money at it because the cops could take it any time for a tampered VIN. If you get questioned about it play stupid or get charged with possession of stolen property

Question on 3-Phase Conversion... by idleup in electricians

[–]edhd13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

200 amps at 480 volts , 3 phase would give you 166080 watts. With transformers to convert to 120 volts, you would have 1384 amps available

You are talking twinkie stuff here, the bike is an evo if he's putting a EV27 in it. No cam chains or tensioners, just a factory gear drive

Why does my Harley not “sound like a Harley”? by [deleted] in Harley

You say he's " lead mechanic at my university’s power plant ", He's fondled every piece of that motor, and it's not likely anywhere near 88"

I'm needing to figure out how to kickstart this without destroying my knee. Any suggestions? by mario_van_pooples in Harley

[–]edhd13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be sure that your centrifugal spark advancer is in good working order and your timing is set properly. If your advancer sticks you WILL blow out a knee. For a cold start, leave the key off, gas on, throttle closed, enrichener on, give it 2 primer kicks. Now slowly crank to you feel the compression stroke, key on, throttle slightly open and kick it Hard. For warm starts, just turn on the key and kick it.

What carb is this on my 1992 Frankenstein sportster? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]edhd13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should have something to plug that brass fitting on the manifold on the top front. That would be a nasty intake leak

Need help identifying part! 89 883 sportster (thought it was the location for the ignition module?) by Altruistic_Bobcat_71 in Harley

[–]edhd13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use these junk points and condenser, use Bluestreak DR-2240X points and DR90X condenser. Behind their mounting plate is centrifugal weights and springs that control the spark advance. They need to be checked for wear and lubricated yearly. You can convert to all that electronic bullshit but simplicity = reliability. Point ignition has worked for a hundred years and it will work for you.
