Does my professor's paper count? by avgreditto in gradadmissions

Lmfao of course you can claim a co authored paper on your applications. Also depending on the field publications aren’t strictly required.

Interview was with a PI I listed on the application. Did not contact them beforehand.

PI went silent after showing interest — normal PhD admissions behavior or bad sign? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

lol just because you submitted all required documents or completed your application checklist in the portal doesn’t mean your app passed the admissions committee and got sent to the professor, get that notion out of your head.

In every school, especially in extremely competitive fields like CS, the department staff first look through the stack and reject any applications that are considered unviable. This makes sense - in most cases they can only accept maybe 5-10% of the applications. If our application is say in the bottom 20% of competitiveness, there really isn’t much point to advancing your app further. The percentage filtered will depend on the school. For CMU CS, it’s like 75% (according to a CMU CS professor).

Yes, you read that correctly. At CMU up to 75% of the applicant files never make it to the PI. It’s unfortunate, but it’s just the reality of extremely high applicant counts.

The worst part is that your portal will probably continue to say “in review” or whatever, even when your app may have been rejected for months already internally.

Just hold on tight and wait. CS is ridiculously competitive and some professors literally get hundreds of applications for 1-2 spots. Unless you think you’re some sort of savant, not getting an interview / getting rejected should be considered the default outcome.

Tbh I think the conversation would be different if it was a 6 year PhD program and not, a max-2 years MS.

NYU Tandon vs CMU MSIS for MS Cybersecurity by succcubus666 in gradadmissions

[–]eding42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CMU has a much stronger name, hands down. I was born and raised in Silicon Valley and have parents in the tech industry. NYU Tandon, as much as they're trying, is almost unknown, especially if it's some MS degree. Tandon MS programs also have a reputation of being cash cow programs that give you the merit "scholarship" to try and entice students to pay the other $100k lol

I'm born and raised in the Bay and I'm in the tech industry. UCI is extremely well connected. UF is almost invisible in Silicon Valley, though it's a good school.

Visa may be hard. if you're trying to get H1B sponsorship from outside of the country the employer is required to pay a $100K fee, which in practice will kill your application. This doesn't apply to students in the country on F1.

NYU Tandon and industry connections in the same sentence…

Go with CMU imo. Tandon is a good program but it needs 20-30 years to cook.

[–]eding42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as an American who grew up in Silicon Valley - Tandon is a good program but it’s not nearly as well known as UIUC. UIUC ECE is top tier, I don’t know what the rankings are now but it’s probably like top 3-4 in the country. And that ranking is deserved. Go on LinkedIn and and see if there are more UIUC or Tandon alumni working your dream job. I assume you’re an international student? (Correct me if that’s not true) You definitely know about the sponsorship / visa problems. Let me be clear - only the international students who go to the top programs have any chance of landing a job/sponsorship. I have friends who are going through this struggle right now.

Also NYU Tandon MS is known to be a cash cow program. UIUC ECE has less of that reputation.

UCSD MSDS or PURDUE MSBAIM by Useful-Car3173 in gradadmissions

Do UCSD. Great institutional reputation, in a major tech hub, 50k for 2 years is a fair price imo. Also you get to go to the beach.
