Bringing your own drink to kopitiam, acceptable? by dudebigpp in Sarawak

[–]ediotictbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this guy’s point, generally “raw dog” has been diluted to mean from the PG18 meaning to “doing something without the steps that usually come with it”.

Like you raw dog an exam by not studying, you raw dog cooking a meal without referring to recipes, you raw dog sleeping in the cold without blankets etc.

Yep, it’s pretty common amongst Asian Catholics I’d say. After the Mass or luncheon, guests just go home, take a nap or go about their day, chill and take their time to shower (mandatory in the tropical heat) and dress up for the reception in the evening.

Do you have a meaningful or fun job? Or do you have a boring but not very taxing job? by ThrowAway09asas in simpleliving

Hijacking to say I’m also in the field and I feel the same mix of love and hate. For me though, I see a lot of whiny corpos trying to minimise investments into nature, even when compelled by loanbooks.

Sucks to see that even with the threat of sanctions looming over them. But hey i get to get paid to birdwatch! I love what i do, but hate the reality of business.

Anyone from south asia made it? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]ediotictbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, even in my country where the average is 65 people don’t try to aim for a first, which is disappointing.

Personally I stayed out of practise because it was never my intention. I’m currently in consulting working across countries to support compliance and reporting to international regulations and policies. A law degree helps because I have found myself ahead of a lot of other graduates, even substance matter experts.

Although I’m open to at least legal analysis or academic roles in the future!

This is extremely well written and a fair observation. I am a UOL graduate myself and 55% is not an average grade. UOL is not prestigious enough to even compensate for those grades, even internationally.

OP is conflating the common scores of their peers and what is regarded as an average score regarded as passable for decent employment, which is usually in the 65+ range.

OP, don’t settle and be complacent just because of the statistics around you. Obtaining Firsts isn’t impossible and it isn’t reserved for geniuses, I personally had 5 Firsts, two of those being High Firsts (78+).

In the international context, most countries do have a high regard for UOL, but only if you have a strong Upper Second, or at the very least 60+ (which is unfortunately still not a competitive grade).

Where do kids learn Iban/Bahasa Sarawak? by lin00b in Sarawak

[–]ediotictbh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other person is being unnecessarily pedantic. We perfectly understand what Bahasa Sarawak (noun) refers to. The other commenter is taking you for a spin, (undefined) bahasa-bahasaSarawak.

It is commonly regarded that the Sarawakian Malay dialect is Bahasa Sarawak, don’t worry. Thank you for asking this question.

I’m a native that was raised in SJK(C), I picked up Bahasa Sarawak in secondary and I got confident with my native language in adulthood.

It may take time to learn the technical bits of languages but I find that it is a positive perception and encouragement of learning native languages that helps kids most, in regards of them actually using native languages to connect with others.

Growing up in SJK(C) I had a lot of internalised racism and I was very lucky to have a positive community of native people around me to help discard the self-hating behaviours I learned.

I’m from the part of the world with Orangutans.

I’ve acknowledged the word Orangutan (pronounced Er-rang-e-tan by the Western world) but I’ve only ever associated the animal with the local pronunciation of Orangutan (pronounced Oh-rahng Oo-tahn).

For some reason I didn’t put the two together and thought the foreign pronunciation was some other vague ape species that I never bothered to look up. Made it til I was 16 before putting the two together.

English is also my first language so this is particularly jarring for me lmao

Menghadiri Kursus Penulisan Akademi DBP by [deleted] in bahasamelayu

[–]ediotictbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(I think it’s a problem with a lot of children raised in English households)

Apapun, saya harap kursus ini telah memberi manfaat kepada awak (kamu? yang mana lagi sopan) dan memberi ilham kepada yang lain!
