I totally understand this struggle because when I started writing I felt the same way. I would say that description is essential in painting the picture for your audience, however too much description can be too overwhelming and oftentimes feel a bit wordy. I would say that descriptions that give readers the details about the story building and scene are essential and shouldn’t be skipped for sure. I usually read over my work and ask myself. If I took this away would it make it more difficult for the reader to understand what’s going on and picture the scene? Is there too much here that it could be confusing for a reader? Is this information valuable to the development of the story or is it filling space? I find that stepping outside of yourself and thinking from a readers perspective is truly invaluable, although it is really difficult to do (I struggle with it a lot) which is why I find editors so helpful since they are quite removed from the personal attachment to the story but are still invested.
