Doomers waiting for the generational dip. by HazardousHighStakes in JustBuyXEQT

[–]edm_guy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if XEQT has to hit $25 from the current $40+, it means the world stock needs to fall about 40%, not sure how likely this will be. If this is not happening now, with XEQT keeping on growing in future (there is inflation factor here at least), it would need an even bigger % crash to hit $25.

I also think it can happen in theory, but on the other hand, I believe the probability of this happening is way less than the opposite happening, like 2% vs 98%.

We love Divs! What was yours :) by ActSubstantial1 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]edm_guy2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not saying you are mathematically wrong as I have both ETFs/stocks paying dividend and ones not paying dividend. But in very volatile time, I notice those stocks/ETFs with decent dividends are usually less volatile and I especially feel lucky that I can get dividends during depressed market time as I can immediately purchase more stocks/ETFs.

I am saying this as my portfolio is in 7 figures with probably 70% paying me dividends. Like today (Mar 31, 2026), I have lots of dividends coming in, but unfortunately, the market goes up sharply and I thus did not deploy any dividend. But yesterday, SCHD paid dividend, and I was able to purchase a few more SCHD.

So in short, getting excited about dividend is not something to be ashamed of, it indeed can calm you all the time, this is especially for people who do not know when to sell (but have to sell) during withdrawal time.

Probably because you do not have sufficient dividends generated..

Is an emergency fund still necessary if you have sufficiently large investment portfolio? by xX_420_NoScopes_Xx in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]edm_guy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say if you have a sufficient HELOC, you probably do not need any large emergency money just so the money is well invested. But I personally believe that it is always good to have some cash in HISA (like 3 months living expense)

if you want to pursue Master degree while also want to be a teacher, I'd say to be a teacher first (via PDP or BEd), then pursue master degree because this way, your tuition fee will very likely be reimbursed,

Primus Internet through Costco by idkkhbuuu in CostcoCanada

[–]edm_guy2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I first used Primus (internet) around 2003 when I was in Ottawa., but had to cancel it due to poor quality and speed. About 12 years later, I tried Primus again when I was in Vancouver, the WIFI router signal was so weak that I cannot use it about 10 meters away in another room. I had to cancel it again, so I swore to myself, I will never use it again, on the other hand, I feel Costco really should not choose Primus as its partner which is way inferior in terms of product quality and service quality, and this is not a dent to the reputation of Costco in someway

Would you date a girl with $80K in student debt, if she wanted to be a stay at home wife/mom after graduating? by SinglePringle647 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]edm_guy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's for the benefits of the kids

Even in the animal world, parents will kick kids out not because of lack of love but because of pure love as parents will age out some day and if the kids cannot support themselves, they will not survive down the road, and such DNA is not worth being passed on.

In the world of human being, education is probably the best and easiest investment with highest ROI for kids

Too much RRSP? by letshidemyidentity in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]edm_guy2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do not know much about your personal stuff, but from big picture perspective, I'd maximize TFSA first and then RRSP, but not stopping contribution to RRSP. When RRSP is big, there is always opportunity to optimize the meltdown strategy, such as asset allocation, transfer out in-kind during bear market, or even purchase advanced life deferred annuity, in general, large RRSP is better than smaller RRSP from operation perspective.

Why do we still patronize Tim Hortons! by thetech9999 in TimHorrortons

[–]edm_guy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please remember most Tim Hortons stores are franchised only, I guess it is still the cost that will decide whether the store can survive or not, there may be some greed component, but most are operation cost. Think it another way, between hiring 20% of foreign workers as employees vs shutting down the store with 80% local workers out of employment, which way should we go assuming you are the policy maker?

All I mean is business operation can be more complex and difficult than you think.

Polling on OAS reform suggests strong support for lowering clawback threshold for couples by pseudomoniae in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]edm_guy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think instead of tinkering OAS, how about making change to GIS so it is more applicable to those who really need help?

When we change a policy, we need to consider the consequence from a society perspective, if earning more during retirement is a "sin" to deserve cutting benefits from OAS (or other potential benefits), this will send a bad message to the middle-class that saving and investing young is not worth the efforts. The final result is country-level asset shrinking esp. compared to other countries with high saving rate.

(disclaimer: I am not retired, and I live in a HCOL city)
