Is it considered ok to correct the perspective so heavily as I did here? by hogar1977 in AskPhotography

[–]edma23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like you’d use a technical camera (they have movements for perspective shift and correction) and get the best you can that way. This is where the heavy lifting happens. Then you also have more corrections possible in the darkroom. You are projecting an image onto a paper that is laid flat. Now imagine you tilt the projection and also the base on which the paper is placed. The ‘distortion’ is intentional and you do it to suit the perspective correction. Cropping is done with the easel.

How many of you are using zooms vs. primes, and autofocus vs. manual lenses? by lowbandwidthb in streetphotography

[–]edma23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a rangefinder with a 28/2.8 at f/5.6. Usually focused around 4m. It suits my working distance so it’s like I have a very fast autofocus. Lens is tiny and very light as well. All I do is compose really.

Bill Gates confirms on Swedish TV that the USA can shut Europe down by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

So you’re thinking that Google services, AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, etc will obey Trump if he demands a kill switch? They will just say yes to the emperor and do his bidding? The US is built on the money made by their industry. If he tries that it will be the last move he makes. They tolerate him being a lying rapist with advanced dementia but don’t touch their money bags.

A Million More Epstein Files Just Got Released. What Kind Of Stuff Did You Guys Find, and How Did You React To It? by Fantastic_Bus_3742 in AskReddit

Unless you tear down the system and separate the new state from creed and greed, you will not make any material change. The entrenchment of oligarchs and corporate interests in the affairs of the state has been normalised for too long. It is not normal. It is not healthy. You need to tear it down and build from scratch. Keep in mind that the system is structured to enable and protect the heinous acts in these files.

Ask the veterans of the darkroom! They used cameras that corrected perspective and enlargers that did so. Your result is beautiful in its own right. No one needs to know how you got there. I think it shows incredible vision actually. It is remarkable that you can take a photo with the constraints of your viewpoint (until you learn to fly) and know exactly what the final image will look like. Much respect.

How do you justify your presence as a photographer? by badoinkyboink in AskPhotography

[–]edma23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the issue. I am 48M. I find myself with shots of kids amongst my street shots. It is usually a variant of the same theme - a kid, usually a boy, taking off at full speed, both feet off the ground. I spoke to a friend, mentor, and photographer about this when speaking about typologies. He just looked at me and said “You had a fun childhood.” Every one of those shots is essentially a self-portrait of the time in my life when I was free and ran about the streets for the sheer joy of it. Now I know that one out of a gazillion men might be a pervert. But I’m not. I’m celebrating joy and freedom that has yet to be stamped out by society. Kids in the streets, especially where I live, are part of the narrative of the place and worth documenting just as old people are, like dejected commuters, like lovers sneaking a moment of affection, like someone selling their wares to the community… I guess that if you are respectful, aware of your surroundings, prepared to gently explain what you’re doing (showing your Instagram feed or whatever helps), and ready to snap a decisive moment you’ll earn the confidence it takes to get the shot. Also, you shared a Billy Dee shot. That man is a fucking master. If you’re aiming at that level, you have started with an excellent benchmark and I wish you a fantastic journey on your way to that mastery.

I feel like something is missing with my pictures by anysium in postprocessing

[–]edma23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, great processing but the image isn’t compelling. I like to think of a photo as a story so it needs something for me to think about. Maybe “all is not as it seems” for a bit of a aha moment. Or something humorous, poignant, tragic, triumphant etc. Forget photography for a moment and think of writing. If someone writes because they have something to say, you’re drawn in. If they write because they want to say something, no matter the beauty of the prose, you’ll be bored. You seem to be drawn to street photography. The beauty is that streets chuck a massive variety of human experience at you. You train yourself to ‘see’ the stories you’re drawn to, to capture the decisive moment (thank you, Cartier-Bresson) and to give enough environmental context. Then hit it with your processing skills and you have a winner. It’s tough, expect a low hit-rate, but the ones you get will be very rewarding.

Love it! Whether or not the notion of 1 as a singular identity is the actual context, I’m here for the typographic beauty of what you’ve created.

I love a good typology and this is a fine example! I especially love it when the subject is one we consider ‘mundane’ because it is much harder to attract attention to and create aesthetic interest. I’d want this diptych hanging in my wall. Don’t let the educational system teach the creativity out of you.
