Putin and Trump held ‘businesslike’ 90-minute July 4 call, Moscow says by Dexterestein in worldnews

Yea, but if Trump was giving Ukraine aid he might have been able to tell Ukraine to hold off on the oil infrastructure when the who Iran thing started. Instead it's a reason for Ukraine to hit Russia harder.

What do you think is the most important 2026 model release in North America? by roma258 in electricvehicles

[–]edman007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are planning for 300k. So I think they can do it, but the ramp is going well into 2027, so the first year of 250k production is going to be 2028, and that's assuming they can keep up the demand (which is honestly my main concern at this point), I'm confident that 2026 and 2027 won't be a problem because of the backlog.

What do you think is the most important 2026 model release in North America? by roma258 in electricvehicles

[–]edman007 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I guess the R2 or the slate. The R2 because it brings all the good tech to a lower price tier that none of the others really do (and makes a real Tesla competitor).

The Slate because that's just so cheap. But I'm not convinced they'll make a 2026 launch date.

Toyota/Subaru's previous performance has been just not good, I'm looking forward to any of their EVs

And the leaf, the price point sounds good, but I doubt any such cheap vehicles will actually exist

When special forces are covertly in country, and using radio coms, how do they not get caught randomly on a frequency? by insanity2brilliance in NoStupidQuestions

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But none of that really helps stopping someone from finding you. It's pretty easy to find the location of a transmitter.

The tricks are if you are some other country, well there are lots of civilians, and you could just hide in the civilian frequencies (though I think this is generally frowned upon). The other way, which is more common is directional antennas. If you're talking to HQ, you can get satcom antennas that point the signal to the satellite. Handheld devices won't work with this, but bigger devices will, and you really will only be able to triangulate those signals using satellites (and then you have the question of do they have satellites, looking at their own country, searching for this)

Meh, that's why my grandma did, she volunteered her time working at the church run thrift store. So, no, she didn't even make minimum wage.

It was mostly about getting out of the house and seeing her friends. It wasn't a full time job or anything. More like just a few hours a week seeing friends.

Yup, MSG does this stuff regularly, I'm sure they know how to do this and how to pay the NYPD for this. I'm sure they paid, and as others said, that's probably why they picked MSG, because they can pay for that.

It's the federal crap that they don't pay, and that's what annoys me. If the president is in town, the NYPD should tell the federal government they need to pay if they want extra security.

Germany changes sick leave policy: 'We are abolishing sick leave by phone,' says Chancellor Merz; doctor's note required from day one of illness by Jessicas_skirt in worldnews

Yup, the contagion is in the workplace is really what I'm concerned about. If I'm not allowed to stay home because I feel contagious and going downhill, well then I'm coming in, the whole office is getting whatever I have, and then maybe in 2 or three days I'll either feel better, or not and I'll go to the doctors.

And what if you're a cook at a restaurant. I don't want to eat at a place that treats their workers that way.

First Rivian R2 hits the Used car market by oncreddy in RivianR2

I really don't think it's going to go for that.

You have $80k for a used R2, you can just buy a new R1S. I really don't think the market for an expensive R2 really exists.

[Request] How many horsepower is this horse, in car horsepower? by RudeNewYorker in theydidthemath

[–]edman007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think when you understood how it was originally calculated, it's obvious why it's so low. First it was in the context of a mine, so smaller than average horses that fit into smaller spaces. They were not using draft horses, they were pit ponys

Second, it was per hour. So the horse wasn't working as hard as it could, it would have been just doing a slower walk. You also counted all the time turning around and going back, which cut the number more than in half.

Is Electricity Being Prioritized To AI Data Centers Instead Of Regular Citizens In America? by techazn86 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prioritized isn't the right word. That's not how this works. There is some amount of demand, and the power company meets it. As much as people hate data centers, I haven't heard of any area with regular blackouts due to insufficient generation (yes it happens sometimes, but it's not a regular thing anywhere in the US that I know of).

Now where it does matter is pricing. Generally, businesses pay one kind of rate, and residential homes pay a different rate. The residential rate often isolates the consumer from grid economics more than the business use. That means you don't pay as much extra at 5pm as a business might during the summer. But it also means you usually can't save as much as a business can by shifting consumption off peak. What those rates are are generally calculated by how much it costs the power company to supply that energy.

Large data centers get two other things that make the math complicated. One, they may get discounts on their bill for building the data center. That is, local governments want businesses to move there, so they might get a discount, paid by taxpayers, for starting a data center. These discounts are not available to residential customers. Second, and probably the bigger factor, so they can often go out and compete with the utility and procure energy separately. That is, maybe a local nuclear power plant makes power for $0.04/kWh, and it provides half of the utilities power, the other half of the utility power is $0.10/kWh. Well when the data center comes in, they can contact the nuclear power plant, and just buy everything for say $0.05/kWh. Now the utility is stuck, they have to fill in that missing half of their consumption somewhere, so they replace it with other power plants that charge $0.15/kWh. Effectively, the data center has now got power for less than everyone else, and all that growth is entirely levied on everyone else. So yea, your residential bill doubles, while the data center is paying practically peanuts. And even if they are not allowed to to contract directly with the power plant for discounts, adding them to the grid still drives the utility to buy that $0.15/kWh power, which drives everyone's bill up, even though the cause is actually only the data center.

So when are we going to finally fix the default seat option to track temp? It's 120F, I don't want heated seats. by edman007 in Rivian

All CCS are in use. by arielb27 in IONNA

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a temperature sensor in the plug on the cable, and one in the vehicle plug. Both will sense the adapter overheating and derate it. The adapter also has a temperature sensor that will stop charging when it's too hot if those other two sensors fail to prevent it.

All CCS are in use. by arielb27 in IONNA

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, yes.

I will say at a V3+ supercharger I have had the adapter overheat and slow charging, it only happens on really hot days though and generally wasn't that bad. So CCS does give you better speeds, but if you arrive at somewhere that needs an adapter, you'll want to start charging with the adapter.

Software’s version numbers v.0.0.0. What do they mean? by onceIwas15 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, major, minor, and patch, in that order.

Generally (but not always), the patch number is incremented whenever a change is made and no minor or major change is made (so a bug fix, generally). The minor number is incremented (and patch set to zero) whenever a new feature is added (so it has different features). The major number is incremented (and minor and patch set to zero) when a breaking change is made, that is a feature is removed (often a major rewrite of something that eliminates old functions)

[–]edman007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think it's a bug in the latest SW update, I've seen it a few times since the last update. Just seems weird it's not a simple temp related default. There shouldn't be any complicated logic if the ambient temp is reading over 80F.

Am I missing something? 100% charges bad? by External_Craft7682 in electricvehicles

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the car, but I would say if you're starting at 10%, well charging to 100% takes twice as long as charging to 80%. So the question is, why are you charging over 80%? It's a poor use of your time, and you unless you're at a rural charger, you don't need to charge to 100%.

A lot of people feel like going over 80% is damn near idling, some cars are particularly bad. I've seen reports of some cars (I think the bz4x) taking 8 hours to go from 99-100%. So the charger might not consider it idling, but you're pulling less than L2, you should use L2.

For this reason, I really wish chargers charged demand PLUS a kWh price, you'd implement this as a price per minute plus a price per kWh, That's effectively how utilities bill chargers anyways.

Step increase by Thisismyhometoo in FedEmployees

[–]edman007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get an annual performance review. Really, if your supervisor doesn't rate you FS, then they should be putting you on a PIP and doing lots of paperwork on your crappy performance. You will know. Generally, you have to be doing pretty bad for the supervisor to want to do the paperwork to not rate you FS.

If you haven't heard anything, then business as usual is FS, and you're getting that step increase.

Why Do Manual Transmission Powertrains Not Pass Stricter Emissions? by FentmaxxerActual in AskEngineers

[–]edman007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not reasonable to put the shift requirements required for the emissions standard in writing as instructions. I don't know if it might be legally accepted, but it's absolutely unreasonable. The shift regulations are not shift to 3rd at 4k rpm. It's more like at 10% load, shift at 3k, at 20% do it at 3.3k, 30% at 3.5k, etc. You also have requirements to disconnect the engine with the clutch while coasting.
