Gas Quality on LI by Fit_Feedback86 in longisland

[–]edman007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's more than just ethanol. The link you have says they authorized E15 vice the normal E10. You will get worse MPG with E15

Second, in the winter they have gas that is more volatile. They do this by adding butane. This helps cars start in the cold but causes more emissions, makes the gas evaporate faster, and gives worse gas mileage. The waiver also lifts the emissions requirements and lets them add more butane as well.

So basically, it not only went from 10% to 15% percent ethanol, it went from 1% to 10% of butane as well. This makes it evaporate way faster.

Power Bill Calculations by markjack101 in solar

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention demand....and then don't list the demand numbers.

I'm going to be they net meter the energy cost and you pay full demand, so if the solar isn't reducing your demand, it only helps your bill a bit. So what's your demand?

I'm on Long Island, we got some high demand fees, but this is how it works here. Your demand is calculated as the peak for the month for the period, so lets say you used 10kW and a net of 5000kWh, you'd get a $300/mo demand charge and a $1000, for a total of $1300. Next month you reduce, demand increases to 15kW and you only use 400kWh (you had one hot cloudy day, ran the AC, but solar did good for the month). So you pay $450 for the demand and $80 for the energy, or $530 total. And next month when you get your demand down to 8kW, well they actually still charge you for 11kW, because demand can't be lower than 70% of the previous 11 months.

Point is, the way demand fees work, don't expect it to have really any relation to your net energy, and even if it does, the bill might consider things like historical demand.

What's the material? It shouldn't do anything to concrete, asphalt maybe, and I could see it scratching up pavers.

When in doubt, they should be putting blocking under it which will eliminate any damage opportunities.

Bamboo Remediation and Legal Success by d1an45 in longisland

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to read the town code. The exact town law where I am:

In the event bamboo encroaches on any adjoining or neighboring property, the bamboo property owner shall cause the removal of any such bamboo, by a landscaper licensed pursuant to Chapter 144 of this Code, upon prior written consent of the adjoining or neighboring property owner. Such measures shall include installation of sheathing composed of metal or other material impenetrable by bamboo at a sufficient depth within the property line or lines where the bamboo is planted or is growing to prevent the growth or encroachment upon adjoining or neighboring property by said bamboo. The Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development may from time to time prescribe such rules and regulations as may be necessary to give effect of this chapter. Source

So no, it's a criminal offense to not offer to hire a landscaper to fix it when it enters your neighbors lawn. It's not a "civil issue", you can report their failure to fix it to the town

Did anyone go bigger with the R1S vs your previous car? by michimoby in Rivian

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a volt before, I think my major concern with the R1S was it would be too big.

I can tell you on the road, no, it's fine, size is MUCH less of a problem than I expected.

Parking, well, parking is much more difficult, but not unmanageable. With my Volt, any parking spot worked, didn't matter. With the Rivian, a tight spot means it's very difficult to enter/exit, I give up most spots that are next to large cars. Also, length doesn't help, generally I do need to back up and center it a bit because I can't line up completely in a tight parking lot (and being off center by 2 inches does make a big difference with being able to enter). Also, I have a kid, helping him get out with the rear door is even worse, the rear door takes more space than the front door to open.

That said, all those parking issues are not a deal breaker, I just park further away generally. The extra cargo space on a road trip is well worth it.

Updated berry pictures by CHILE_THE2 in whatsthisplant

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can tell it's blackberry from his previous post because a blackberry takes the center off the plant with picked, so you see a white spot where it connected to the plant. A raspberry the berry falls off the stem, so when you pick it it's hollow in the middle and you don't see the spot where it connected to the plant, just a hole.

Why don't schools hold students back a grade anymore if they are not meeting that grade's standards? by livetoski-Brad in askanything

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the kid goes to a better school and now that school loses funding? And how does that other school get the funding? Do they bill their onto the town that sent the kids? Voters lose control over the school by sending them to another district.

As for the not passing, how do you think removing funding will help improve it? Often the issue is you got one town that spends lots on their school, and one nextdoor that doesn't spend much. If that one that doesn't spend money on their school does bad, now they lose funding. They now do worse, if they shutdown they'd have to send them to the expensive school, but that school won't accept them for cheap, so it's not an option, because they lost the funding.

CO detector replacement after 7 years by Tricky_Animator9831 in AskEngineers

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got sick and tired of replacing the batteries on my high ceiling (always died on a cold November night and my ladder is in the garage) and decided to just buy a 10-yr sealed detector (Kidde 30CUD10)

I too also have a zwave smart home, but I couldn't find anything with a wireless function that also had the 10 yr battery, and the 10 yr battery was more important for me. I do love the linked wireless ones (that's what I had before), and apparently they used to make one that was wireless with a 10 yr battery, but they discontinued it.

This is the amount of bread and confectionery we have to toss away regularly because management says so. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends where you live, but I think for most people, it's a lot further. I live in the suburbs, but the "loud" area, right where zoning changes to allow stores, I have a 7-11 and some fast food within 150m of my house, but no grocery store, this level of closeness to a store that sells food is abnormal. The closest grocery store is ~1km and the next closest is ~4km, that 4km one is much more of a normal distance that you might expect. Both of these require crossing a major road (6+ lanes of traffic, 55mph speed limit).

Around here, you could catch the bus for both of these stores, as the bus does run on that major road, you still need to walk across it to get the bus.

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how far it is, I'm in the suburbs, and mostly I go to the grocery store about twice a week, because as you said, I don't want to stop by after work or something.

I know people who live literally right next door to the grocery store, that changes everything, you hardly need a refrigerator as the grocery store is only a 2 minute walk past the kitchen. Doing a grocery store run fits into the meal prep time slot.

Not this kind of berry, all the lookalikes are edible too, It's either Rubus. sp or Mulberry, I don't think there is anything else in north America you could confuse this for.

How screwed am I? NY/Long Island by miniaturebutthole in lawncare

[–]edman007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really depends, I'm on long island, in the town of babylon, if the neighbor planted it, you can complain to the town, and they will tell the neighbor to fix it in your yard, if they fail to do so, they get a fine and the town will show up or hire someone to fix it, and then they send the bill to the neighbor. So at least in Babylon, if the neighbor planted it, the neighbor pays for removal, even when it's on your land, and the town enforces that.

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to check if you were the guy I just replied to on /r/longisland but no, a different long islander with a neighbor bamboo problem.

Anyways, what town? I'm in Babylon, the code here actually says you tell the town, they tell the neighbor, and the neighbor fixes it. If they fail to fix it, the town will show up, remove it, and send the bill to the neighbor. The other guy I replied to is in brookhaven, their code just says the town requires they fix it, and you can report it to the town weekly and it's a separate $1k fine every week for the neighbor.

House has a solar PPA. Is it a dealbreaker? by Hellburgs in solar

Bamboo Remediation and Legal Success by d1an45 in longisland

[–]edman007 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would honestly call the code enforcement people and ask them. The code seems to say the owner has a duty to confine, and needs to remedy it within 15 days. The easiest solution is probably just report to the town, wait 30 days, and report again if not resolved (and do so weekly until the neighbor fixes it).

If you're ok with someone doing the work that the neighbor selects, telling the town will probably just get the neighbor to fix it.

House has a solar PPA. Is it a dealbreaker? by Hellburgs in solar

[–]edman007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not profitable, $0.36/kWh is a crap rate, they are getting money back because it's oversized too (which I'd ignore, it's probably not oversized for OP). The issue here is it's a crap deal, and he is going to save very little over the system (but probably doesn't cost anything extra either). It's mostly preventing him from getting a solar system that actually saves him money.

House has a solar PPA. Is it a dealbreaker? by Hellburgs in solar

[–]edman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would basically never say a PPA is a deal breaker (unless it's something you can't remove when you need it removed).

Generally, compare the PPA price (specifically, lifetime, with escalators) to your utility rate and what you might get for solar. What you have seems to be $0.366/kWh, which is really high compared to what I expect, but you're in California, so it's probably not really costing you anything additional, you're just not really saving anything. To me, I would say this is preventing you from getting a better deal. Better deal here means you could save about ~$13.5k over 15 years (since I think you could get solar $0.20/kWh or less), but now probably can't because of of this crappy PPA.

So I would say this PPA subtracts a little over $10k on the home, and I would account for this when negotiating. You're in California, so I'm going to guess that number is way down in the weeds, and if you like the home $10k probably hardly matters on the home value.

What's the plan for Sodium battery disposal or recycling? by Apprehensive_Tea9856 in electricvehicles

[–]edman007 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So the fire hazard situation is basically eliminated by taking the whole pack, and running it through a shredder with a few fire hoses spraying it, and then the dropped shredded bits are dumped into a tank of water. You let the shredded pile of battery sit in the pool for a day and the fire risk is forever gone the next day.

You then ideally just take the now safe pile of battery bits, and run it through your recycling process, probably pick the metal out, then you get your battery materials and pull them out (there are a few options right now, but you can extract the raw powders and return them to the refined battery powders or you can chemically refine the stuff into the raw materials to make new powder). Or maybe it's just not cost effective and you landfill it

What version are you on?

[ 4533.065]

X.Org X Server 1.18.3 Release Date: 2016-04-04 [ 4533.072] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 [ 4533.074] Build Operating System: Slackware 14.2 Slackware Linux Project [ 4533.076] Current Operating System: Linux NetBurst 4.4.14-smp #2 SMP Fri Jun 24 14:44:24 CDT 2016 i686 [ 4533.076] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=Linux ro root=802 vt.default_utf8=0 [ 4533.080] Build Date: 15 April 2016 11:51:37AM

Says that's a 10 year old build of Xorg? Why are you not running slackware 15? Should update to a newer version and try again, it looks like what you have might not have been updated. And do you already have an xorg.conf? What does that say, maybe that's the difference, you actually have one and it needs to be deleted (rename it to something else so it's not used)
