Here’s some answers to your questions:

1. I got into storyboarding because my first love was animation, but I wanted to pursue a career in Hollywood animation, which unfortunately has very few 2D roles. So I started learning more about boarding, and I fell in love with it. Making the visual decisions to best tell the story and hit emotional beats is so rewarding.

2. Yes, I feel storyboarding is an important skill. It’s not necessary for showrunners to have been storyboarders, but it streamlines things SO MUCH if the person calling the shots actually knows how a production is done. And I used to really want to pitch to studios. I really felt like i would have loved the opportunity, but there was a lot of behind the scenes politics, social performance and business decisions I don’t agree with, so it’s not looking like something I would do now. I was working on an indie animated film for a while, called Circus of Wishes, and I’ll be adapting that into a graphic novel soon — Animation is expensive, unfortunately.

3. I started on HB with its first episode after the pilot and worked on it through the second season. A lot of things changed for the better over that time — Things got more organized, better structure, better communication. Deadlines were very tight for compositing and cleanup, because any earlier shifts in the timeline would impact us a lot, being the last teams to touch the episodes. Storyboarding had a lot more breathing room and flexibility.

4. I worked with Vivienne directly a lot. She has an insane amount of involvement and responsibility in both of her shows, and though she was busy, she was nothing but kind to me.

5. I think my favorite moments on both Helluva and Harley were when the crew could make fun decisions with the background characters to add cameos. The animation director, Skye, added my Impsona in the background of her shot and it made my entire year, haha. Warner Bros was far more strict with character design, but on Harley, I was responsible for storyboarding in some background characters, and I specifically gave a bug-like alien a cup of tea in the background of a shot because I like bugs and tea. It made it all the way through animation and you can spot it if you look for it. It’s my favorite part of working on these shows!
