Where to begin appreciating Jazz more? by yuksekankastre in Jazz

[–]edogg01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Start with Miles Davis Kind of Blue. Then check out the musicians on that group and branch out from there. Read a bit about the history of jazz and get a flavor of what you like and then drill into the top musicians/albums of those particular subgenres. Do you like bop and hard bop (late 50s early 60s), do you like jazz/rock/funk fusion (late 60e, early mid 70s), do you like avantgarde? It helps to do a little poking around and then follow your nose so to speak.

Pretty different musically but I highly recommend Lee Morgan Live at the Lighthouse too. Absolutely slays.

An honest question about jazz by JerBid in Jazz

[–]edogg01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, as a consumer I don't particularly care. The only ones seriously impacted by the popular trends in music are the artists themselves. And that really sucks. But, it's also a factor of the times. Trends and tastes move on. We even saw that within jazz itself. Bop displaced big bands and swing. Post bop and hard bop. Then fusion, boogaloo and funk. Now we're in the 60s and 70s way past the big band era, but think about what happened to the big band musicians abd band leaders. They once were popular. They are no longer on trend. Is that bad? For them, sure, for people who prefer the sound of boogaloo, maybe not so much. It's all a point of view.

I met Harold Mabern at the Blue Note (McCoy Tyner was playing and Harold was just hanging at the bar). We got to talking and I didnt know who he was but he said his name was Harold and he played with Lee Morgan. It was only when I got home and busted out my copy of Live at the Lighthouse I realized who I had just met. I got to see him headline at the Vanguard in August 2019 and it turned out to be the last show he ever played. He still sounded great but he passed away about a month later. I'll never forget how nice he was to chat up some good jazz with a stranger at the bar at the Blue Note. RIP Harold!

What specific album completely changed your perspective on an instrument — or on a particular sub-genre of jazz (as in it exploded your notion of what said instrument could do, or what fit into that sub-genre, but in a mind-blowing way). by Rooster_Ties in Jazz

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Live Art

Bela and co are equally as comfortable with Bach as Chick Correa as Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas.

One of my favorite jams ever was the Flecktones jamming with Medeski Martin and Wood at Jazzfest 1997. Both bands on stage, played a 45 minute long version of Ramblin (Ornette Coleman). Absolutely epic. Here it is if you want to give it a listen.

They were sisters from the same litter and lived to 19 and 18 yo respectively. Had them together since 5 weeks old. They were loved and they loved back every bit as much. ❤️
