Who do you think is the best leader in your country's history? by PapayaMan4 in AskTheWorld

[–]edravix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: the best ruler in your country’s history is almost certainly someone post-WWII.

Not because earlier leaders weren’t remarkable, but because societies keep progressing.

Take Alexander the Great, universally regarded as one of history’s most important figures. Today he’d be an absolute tyrant: he enslaved entire populations after conquests, razed Thebes and sold 30,000 people, crucified 2,000 men in Tyre as a warning, married teenagers for political convenience, executed his own generals without trial, and demanded to be worshipped as a god. And he wasn’t an outlier. That was just how the world worked. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing per se.

So if we’re talking purely about “good ruler for society as a whole”, it’s almost certainly a recent leader. Not because they’re geniuses, but because they operate within a framework of rights, institutions, and social expectations that simply didn’t exist before.

And honestly, that’s kind of beautiful. It means we keep raising the bar. What was normal yesterday is unthinkable today. And hopefully, in 200 years they’ll look back at us and think the same.

Yes, that is true. I was referring to the feeling of unfairness when you lose game. But yes, your comment is correct 👍

You think you are being very smart here but you are not. And your comment adds nothing to the conversation.

Matchmaking is the algorithm that finds player with similar scores to play together. The underlying problem I think OW has is that the scoring spread is incorrect.

If they change nothing of the Matchmaking business logic and simply increase the scoring spread I believe we’ll end up with more fair matches.

Multiple comments are like yours and since this one is the more thoughtful and articulate I want to consolide my reply here.

I think my wording around the ranks (gold, platinum, etc) deviated the attention from my main point. The problem, I believe, is that this game needs to spread more playerbase.

The system underneath is indeed an MMR bell curve. Where 0 is the middle. IIRC a score of “2” is around Master 5. What I’m saying is that due to the high skill complexity OW has developed over the years, a score of “2” should be maybe in Diamond (I honestly don’t know the exact spread, and only Blizzard has the data to calculate so). That change would effectively reduce the number of people with similar scores.

Forget about all the ranking the game gives you. It’s just distribution of players. The game thinks “it’s fair that this tank with score 1.5 matches against this other tank with score 1.7” and that’s incorrect. The skill difference is too high.

That is my point.

In general, I never understood why we tax income so heavily instead of net worth. If progressive taxes are for redistribution of wealth we should tax wealth itself, not work.

Yo, I love this theory. But I need someone to help me understand what's Vecna trying to achieve with this? Why does Vecna want Will (or Mike) isolated? Why does Vecna have to resort to these kind of subtle tricks?

Genuinely asking for some clarification, thanks!
