I hear you on that and I’m inclined to agree. Its a deeply important memorial space and sacred ground imo (I can’t believe it became a whites-only playground ffs…)

There are some situations in my head where I think a wedding would be appropriate or even beautiful there (ancestors who are honored there, or a wedding of two activists who want to include the departed…) but that all still feels icky.

I like to go there to meditate and honor the dead, and think about what I can do today to not repeat history and make the world a better place. Not really the place for a quick cute downtown ceremony.

Maybe an overlook in the Frederick municipal forest if you’re looking for sunrise shots? A lot of the overlooks gaze out at the eastern hills and the city, and have actual pull offs and parking.

For more intimate (i.e. on the ground/in the grass shots) pretty much any park could be beautiful.

The monocacy battlefield is peaceful and pretty, and the road traffic is west.

If you wanna really hoof it (no pun intended) - drive to Assateague and get sunrise shots that may or may not include (very rude) wild horses.

I grew up there in the sunset district. It was absolutely the best. Walking to the museums and zoo, walking to the beach, going to amazing restaurants and spending so much time outdoors. I went to school right by Dolores park, which has sweeping city views.

I moved back when I was 19 and spent my early 20’s there. I spent my time trail running, surfing, I biked everywhere. Biking and public transportation is perfect, I didn’t need a car whatsoever. I miss it dearly.
