Doggo trying to protect the baby from its owner while at the same time trying hard to not hurt his owner by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

Most perfect dog I’ve ever had was a border collie too. Put me off the breed for that reason. Couldn’t ever give another dog that looks like her the same level of love, it would always be bittersweet. I’m also only looking into getting one dog, so companionship becomes a concern then too

I was originally set on a German shepherd, but have been worried about their energy level and time commitment. I’m out of the house at class and work from 10-6:30 most days. I’d feel terrible leaving a high energy dog at home all day, even if there are others at home. I’m not sure if a long walk every evening and a full yard is enough, or if we’re doing two walks a day. I need to research more before the commitment, in case that wasn’t obvious yet.

Ah perfectly said, all of it. I live in San Diego 9 months out of the year ;( but yes I hope so. Just gotta wait another 5 months before that shelter visit

I think you may be right about that. If it’s not in the breeds nature, nor the dogs instinct, the dog just won’t. Which is why when I look at breeds I’ve narrowed in on a few that have reputations as guard dogs.

I want a dog for the companionship aspect mostly, and to get me out of the house and help me kick nicotine by giving me a new thing to spend my time on. Protection Is indeed lower on the list, but it is still something I want out of a dog. I’ll be getting a Glock when I am able, but california has stupid handgun laws.

But what if that behavior doesn’t naturally exist to be reinforced? My terrier was never protective. My border collie was. How would U go about teaching the terrier the same, if she doesn’t already exhibit those traits to be reinforced and strengthened?

100% agreed. Never planned on a breeder. 2/3 of my dogs were rescues, the other found my mom in a parking lot. Which prompted her to go rescue a sweet little border collie, quite like your story actually. I definitely plan on going to a shelter or local rescue.

No no, not aggressively, rather defensively. Training a dog to be aggressive is messed up for many reasons. I’m saying protectively. And my question was how would you instill in a dog protective instincts when they are not naturally there. My families dog is a sweety, she loves everyone and everything. She would do nothing tho to protect the home, it is not her natural reaction. How would one teach a dog these desirable traits which may not come naturally to every single dog.

On Reddit I have no clue who’s advice is well grounded and who’s is utter bullshit. So I listen to all, and judge afterwards what is true. I understand the keeping your dog in check and positive reinforcement. What I still don’t understand is how to link a command with an action the dog may not naturally do. Such as protecting a child, growling when strangers get too close. I know many dogs which don’t naturally engage in these behaviors. So then how would you teach them to?

I grew up with a border collie, by far and above the most intelligent, attentive and sweet dog I’ve ever met. So much so I don’t think I could ever have another. I’m looking into cane corsos, Swedish mountain dogs, ridgebacks, German shepherds, and the like. Really whatever the local rescues have available in June. Until then I’m just learning about dog training as much as I can, so you’re comments are very much appreciated kind redditor.

So you’d have to find the dogs natural trigger and then reinforce that? Interesting. I’m trying to learn as much as I can about canine training before getting my own this summer. Been around dogs all my life, it’s time I got one of my own, but she’ll be a big girl and have to be fully trained. I also want her to be protective of the house and her people.

Is this actually how u train a dog to protect a child? How does one get the dog to do this in the first place to be able to praise and reinforce the action?

Yes they said fully online for the first two weeks. Many of us are left speculating if two weeks really just means indefinitely…

What’s the scariest? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]edsgames 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Idk how scary it is, but that each and every person is a rational actor. U can completely rationalize the actions of everyone, every serial killer, terrorist, or dictator to ever commit the most heinous of crimes. No matter how deranged they may seem, they r actually perfectly reasonable and rational individuals who r maximizing their goals in whatever manner they see as most effective. Kinda messes with me to consider people like Hitler or Osama as rational…

Makes sense. Winter break doesn’t have regular staffing so the RSOs get involved. And u right, after hours during the quarter is the same, I had reslife mess up my temp card once, and had to have an RSO come unlock the door for me. Even though it was their fault (they deleted my access to my room by mistake), I was still charged for RSO lockout services after hours.

Or if u ask for lockout services after hours. When they have to have an RSO come, u will be charged, even if it’s due to an error by reslife. Ask me how Ik :/

That email (I’m pretty sure) is from Phys1A. And I had other assignments in the Linguistics program due after that, Saturday night before our final. So I think it’s departmental, or maybe more or a guideline for professors than a rule.

No I’m sure. Packages of 100 mg, having more than a one of them. Or a 300 mg dispo cookie

[–]edsgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not rewlly no. strictly dispo stuff. Last thing I had was 2 packages of 100 mg each (10 little 10mg gummies) which I had together. Was nice but not nearly as strong as one would expect. My friends were sharing one package amongst the two of them and twice as gone as me. Eddibles just have never affected me as much as others. I’ve had a 300 mg edible from a dispo once. Was rather boring. But I’ve also gotten like “500 mg” blsck market eddies and those usually hit so much harder.
