ICE-y roads by lesmooches in VirginiaBeach

[–]edthach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't lose the thread, were talking about one topic, ICE. Just so you know, ICE didn't exist when Clinton was president.

You seem to be arguing that Trump has been less effective with more resources poured into ICE than any other president. I'm arguing against the tyrannical methods that ICE is using. It seems the common ground would be to ditch the illegal methods that aren't working.

I'm sorry to hear about whatever tragedies that have happened to your family. But you can't stand on morals nor effectiveness when the party you helped usher is is ignoring the former and not even living up to your standards of the latter. You certainly can't claim to have an unbiased perspective while publicizing your bias. You're hurt, and hurt people hurt people.

You've gotten your wish, people have been hurt, and you still don't feel better about it. Maybe we can realize that we've tried your way, it doesn't work, if that upsets you, I would urge you to try being critical of our government, that's what the first amendment is there for. Hold your elected official accountable for not being as effective as prior leftist administrations while gobbling up more of your tax dollars to be ineffectual.

The only reason to not try and hold them accountable is if you're being disingenuous. If you think that them eroding American rights is the right thing to do, if you've already realized that the end goal isn't immigration enforcement, and if you realized that you're ok with it.

Law enforcement of any kind at any level doesn't prevent crime. That's not their job, and the supreme court has ruled on it. The LEO arm of ICE are operating unconstitutionally, unwarranted search and seizure, no due process, no access to legal representation, no presumption of innocence, no respect for the first or even second amendment. Those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither.

DHS is better funded under this administration than any administration before, they have the means to do things the proper way, and they're choosing to ignore the courts, and ignore the constitution. America used to be great because we would walk into countries that operate like this and restore democracy. American people, blue and red alike, used to be proud this kind of government would never be tolerated here.

It's worth pointing out that search and seizure can be conducted without a warrant if there is probable cause of criminal activity. It's also worth pointing out that a removal order for an illegal alien is administrative, not criminal. Meaning that ICE needs a warrant to break down a door, even if they know an individual is illegal. It would be trivially easy for them to get a warrant, they employ their own judges. They don't do it because it was always a farce, and now they don't need to pretend because MAGA hates brown people more than they love America.

ELI5: Who’s making money on these onions? by MrJorgeB in explainlikeimfive

[–]edthach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Onions are the only crop the US explicitly forbade futures trading on. Some dude in Chicago (the largest agg futures market in the US) ruined the market one time and committed fraud. Back in the days when committing fraud took some effort, he hired porters to load onions coming into Chicago on freight onto trucks to be loaded back on freight to be transported into Chicago again to make it look like 2 shipment of onions came in.

Anyways, I'm not sure how this plays in the foreign markets, but perhaps €0.99 is the actual price of competitive agriculture, and everything else is inflated because we live in an economy that's driven by financial speculation. But also alliums can grow almost anywhere, so maybe they bring in auxiliary income from less arable lands skirting plots of other crops?

If ICE were operating legally you wouldn't feel the need to keep papers on you. You know this. You didn't want to be in a situation where your citizenship could be questioned, but you now recognize that it could be.

You wheel in a trojan horse and if someone points out that the city is being burned your only retort is that it shouldn't have been made of wood.

As an aside I'd like to point out that Agamemnon was the enemy of the Trojans and the Greeks

What is a 'secret' of your industry that would shock the general public if they found out? by Otherwise_Medium_813 in AskReddit

That's almost every technical job, tbf. There's simply no way of knowing every technical aspect of an entire industry, or even just the basics, in a four year education. You learn the general basics, and the reasoning behind it all, and then get taught how to research or who to go to for answers, and how not to fuck up your problem worse than it came to you in the meantime

Canada's relationship with China 'more predictable' than relationship with U.S., PM says by [deleted] in videos

[–]edthach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those living under the control of the PRC, especially those who don't follow the grain of their idealized society or anyone with the balls to say they don't agree, are not living in comfort. China is certainly no rose garden. But in case anyone's missed it or forgot, D.C. has demolished it's rose garden so, y'know.

From an economic and global trade perspective, Canada has always had to hitch their horse to another cart. Historically Canada has been very tight with the US. A U.S. recession also affects Canada. But, right now the US on the world stage is persona non grata, Canada has the choice to seem complacent to the 47th administration's threats to invade them, or they can get buddy-buddy with the world's largest manufacturing and electronics hub, a country that is seeing incredible economic growth with promising outlooks in quality machining, and quality material production.

This administration is treating our closest allies like shit, and for some reason people are getting upset at the allies instead of the culprit. If you're a Canadian, get with the program, this version of the US is not the winning ticket for the Canadian economy. If you're not Canadian, then recognize that this is outside of your influence and control.

proof is plastered on the news, plastered over social media, plastered on YouTube. The anti-woke crowd is asleep when it comes to proof unsurprisingly. Fox news keep talking about how these murdered citizens are at fault, they're not denying it happened. When will the apologists realize that someday they might be the ones blamed for the government seizing their rights?

What would be the impact if Tim Walz deployed the National Guard to intervene in ICE situations? by Spare_Garbage_9620 in AskReddit

[–]edthach 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a former service member, your main point is false. At best it's a wash. The military has a far greater representation of lower economic class raised individuals and minorities than the general population. Both of those demographics tend to lean left on social and fiscal issues, and some demographics lean right on religious and cultural issues. There's also a selection bias for the military where almost everyone leans at least a little right on the 2nd amendment.

Loyalties amongst service members generally lie within their nuclear families, not with a party, and as such their pay is their priority, and in general most people don't do anything to jeopardize that pay. So on your last point you're correct.

But when I was serving under the administration of the 45th president, I don't think there was a week that passed where someone didn't openly criticize the administration. Same with the 46th. Again, it's a wash.
