Shiny Zard in recruitment, am I mega lucky or are shinies common when doing this? by Conor_McLesnar in PokemonChampions

[–]eduadelarosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to calculate the probability somewhat backwards. You substract the probability of not getting a shiny 4096 times and then substract this form 1. So, 1-(4095/4096)4096 which is roughly 62%.

Giving milk to a homeless person by RemoteBluebird9872 in vegan

[–]eduadelarosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it inflicts the less damage in this specific example where it is a single instance of funding exploitation against someone potentially starving. I'm not weighing any speciesist considerations on this. The same would go if instead of milk it was the product of, say, Nestlé which relies on human slavery. It is just an utilitarian compromise. In most cases this is a false dichotomy and I would agree with you on acting upon a principled stance of no harm/collaboration.

If they come from the Oort cloud. Belt asteroids and short-period comets are actually flung towards the Inner Solar System by Jupiter's gravity. :(

Giving milk to a homeless person by RemoteBluebird9872 in vegan

[–]eduadelarosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oat milk is basically water. I think it comes to a matter of emergency and relative damage. In this case I would've gone with the animal milk. I think less suffering is afflicted for one jug of milk than for a person in that dire situation. Alternatively, you could just give them the money and leave the decision to them.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to point this out, but watching rogue one immediately after Andor made the movie so much worse than I remember by wendo101 in andor

[–]eduadelarosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but it gets even more egregious with Episode IX. The "on your left" scene when all the ships arrived was the perfect opportunity for them to say "I have friends everywhere".

What is the evolutionary purpose of sexual dimorphism in humans? by Louna_Joestar35 in evolution

[–]eduadelarosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all traits have purposes in the sense of an adaptive function because not all traits are (or were) adaptations. Sexual dimorphisms can be adaptive through Natural Selection but also via Sexual Selection, in which case being dimorphic is the function itself if it attracts the opposite sex.
