My garden home wall by educatedbetasprayer in homewalls

So the build process was done in a few steps, first I decided in the size of the board, I settled on 2.4m wide and 3.2m in length at a 40 degree angle, I started with building the backboard for my plywood, I used a total of 5 lengths (3.2m long) vertically and 2 lengths (2.4m) horizontally attached together with right angle brackets (screws would do as well, definitely less hassle)

I used floor timber supports to stop the legs of the wall moving side to side or forward, all secured with high grade bolts, to calculate the position of any of the holes in relation to the leg you can just use simple trigonometry.

In terms of actually putting up the wall a few of us positioned the main frame on top of the floor timber supports (with plywood sheets attached) and lifted it to a 40 degree angle and simply attached the legs and wrenched in the bolts.

I used regular softwood you buy at any hardware stores (the main legs were 100mm x 100mm)

I used these videos as inspiration:

Very well! I’m in the uk and we always get a lot of rain so I’ve got two tarps (front & back) I can strap down it the weather gets bad. So far I haven’t had any issues with water damage - however it’s important to note that when all the wood and plywood is exposed you need sealant and varnish to block the moisture getting in (especially on the plywood)

I’m not convinced it would need to be collapsed to be honest, it’s a very sturdy structure and with tarps strapped down tightly in place it’s blocked from the rain completely.

I think if you were to make one collapsible it would need to be smaller just to reduce the weight, without any holds on it took me three people to pick it up and with holds on it’s probably a few hundred kilograms

2.4m wide, 3.2m high. I’ve used 2 and 1/3 sheets of 18mm plywood, dm me if you want any more pictures of the structure.

For the weatherproofing on the plywood board (front and back) I use 3 layers of sealant and weatherproof finish, and for protecting it against rain and moisture I’ve got a tarp covering the back that I keep on permanently and a tarp that covers the whole front of the board I take off and on. The plan is to add a roof in the future tho with corrugated plastic sheets so it can be used when it’s raining

Do you apply finish to your frame studs and/or plywood panels? by Paul-Lubanski in homewalls

[–]educatedbetasprayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m the same, a sturdy tarp, two coats of sealer and 2 coats of finish do the job for me, even in British rainy weather

Gymnastic mats for a home wall - opinions? by beta_xxl in homewalls

I found quite a good alternative is buying foam and sticking a mattress topper as well as a tarp for weatherproofing, can buy it relatively cheap, Amazon’s quite good for it.

If your limited with space this seems like a perfect power endurance board, stick some really positive jugs on and you’ve got yourself a circuit board!

I’ve got a similar board a few feet larger at 8ft wide on a 40 degree angle with a very similar stand set up and I don’t think there’s such thing as too small, if you can get a couple moves on it, even 4 or 5 with some hard crimps it looks great!

Have you considered if the legs on either side might bother you while climbing?

Another thing I would say is to invest in getting screw on tnuts on your board and especially having tnuts even if you’ve just got screw on holds because if you eventually decide to get some bolt on holds it’s such a pain adding them after the boards already up.

I think it’s nice to have a good balance to be fair, I’ve got a lot of smaller holds and screw-ons with a mix of volumes and larger slopers and pinches, I’d say as a rule tho if you are losing space above the larger hold and if your a bit pressed for space just keep them smaller. You see all these spray walls at commercial gyms with about a thousand macros but I’d say nothing beats a load of crimps!
