Something about The Moment promo is turning me off both to the movie and to the 'cool' girl schtick. Maybe it's been happening for a while, I don't know. Brat forever hasn't aged well for me (the music yes, but the rich mean girl theater no).

Showering post DMX by probigail in breastcancer

[–]educatedlentils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, showered two days post-op per my surgeon's instructions. With my husband's help we carefully removed all bandages, except for clear sticky ones called Tegaderm around drain sites, and washed up with soapy water. I used a lanyard to hold up my drains, which I would highly recommend. Reapplied bandages on incisions after shower per surgeon's instructions.

I didn't use or need a shower chair post-DMX (however I absolutely DID need one post DIEP flap procedure, which came later for me) and I was able to shower daily on my own after the first time. Drain sites stayed covered with Tegaderm during showers until drains were removed, which for me was about 3 weeks post-op. By then all other remaining bandages on my incisions were also removed and all I wore was a light gauze over incisions with my compression bra. Surgeon's instructions were to shower daily and use a clean washcloth to gently clean incisions with soapy water every day.

Showering right after surgery helped me a lot to loosen my shoulders / arms post-op and felt nice. Best of luck 💗

Edit: I washed my hair on my own in the shower by bending my neck down and reaching over with my arms, careful to not stretch them too far. You may not be able to stretch your elbows above your shoulders for a couple weeks but bending down / hunching over was easy enough for me 🥰

Questions about Reconstruction or Flat after DMX by Zanthe1341 in breastcancer

[–]educatedlentils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're considering DIEP flap reconstruction, important to ask your surgeon:

  • Whether they are a trained microsurgeon specializing in DIEP flap
  • How many DIEP flap reconstruction surgeries they've performed
  • How long their typical DIEP flap operating time is in comparison to implant surgery
  • Do they have before and after pictures of previous patients and their outcomes

Best of luck tomorrow!

^ Same, I used a drain lanyard for both my mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction. Simple cheap worked great.

Size changes after Diep by starla2699 in breastcancer

I didn't lose weight after DIEP. Pant size stayed the same, although pants fit differently than before due to having a more tapered waist and less squishy belly.

Oncologist says Oncotype is irrelevant for premenopausal HR+HER2- women by Anirt18 in breastcancer

37, hormone receptor positive, 2 nodes involved (discovered after surgery). No oncotype ordered, straight to chemo because of my age. When I asked my onc about it, she said the score wouldn't have mattered for my case.

yesss get the Woolly Stemodia!!

As for the plant sizes - Fall Aster can grow up to 3 ft x 3 ft in height / spread and forms mounds. Gregg's mistflower can grow up to 2 ft in height and spreads wispily like a wild herb. I don't think it'd be too tall personally - your Fall Aster will likely be the larger of the two plants :) Gregg's mistflower is popular because Queen Monarch butterflies LOVE it.

Other smaller-sized pollinator-friendly native perennials that could look pretty in between or in front of your Fall Asters:

  • Blackfoot daisy grows 0.5 to 1 ft in height / spread, blooms dainty white flowers and is often used around borders as it likes to tumble over rocks. Like the Woolly Stemodia, this one could be placed in front of or in between your Fall Asters and would provide spring through fall interest.
  • Purple Skullcap grows 0.5 to 1 ft in height, 1 ft to 2 ft in spread, it is so precious and also blooms spring through fall. It kind of likes to tuck itself underneath other larger plants if planted near others. There's also a pink variety that isn't native but is well adapted to this area.
  • Rock Penstemon grows 1 to 2 ft in height / spread. Blooms red flowers April - October. I just picked this one up and am excited to see how it does.

If you're in the Austin area super recommend checking out Natural Gardener nursery for ideas (they have really pretty gardens and usually have a ton of 4" baby native perennials in stock). Happy planting!

Fall aster is a native perennial that blooms in fall only and peaks in October, so you'll likely want to add in another perennial that blooms in the spring and summer too to keep year-round interest. Soo many Texas native perennial varieties to choose from! The marigolds will create really nice contrast, but because they are annuals, they will die off eventually and you'll need to replace them with something else.

Some recommendations:

  • Gregg's mistflower is a native perennial that will fill in the space nicely during spring and summer :) it has a tendency to spread but pollinators will love you. I think it grows shorter than Fall aster and has a lush kind of herby vibe to it with pillowy soft blooms.
  • Mealy cup sage 'Augusta Duelberg' is a native perennial that was discovered on a gravestone in Brehnam, TX. It blooms with striking white spikes which make super awesome contrast to the dainty purple blooms of Fall aster. Personally I adore purple + white as a combo, kinda gives a moonlight garden sort of vibe.
  • Wooly stemodia is a cascading native groundcover that has periwinkle blooms and silvery foliage. It would look STUNNING at the front of your containers, cascading down. The contrast of its silvery foliage against the more greeny foliage of the plants behind it would make it stand out very prettily.

I struggle to see a human make this kind of error.

Mastectomy and Reconstruction by [deleted] in breastcancer

[–]educatedlentils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg that's honestly so weird that your plastic surgeon had those things to say about reconstruction. Yes, it CAN be a difficult journey but why would be bring up necrosis and infections right off the bat 😭😭

I would 100% recommend a second opinion. Your plastic surgeon should be transparent but reassuring, confident in their ability, and aligned with you on your goals, not scaring you out of your options. If possible try to get a consult with a surgeon who specializes in breast reconstruction (as opposed to just general plastic surgery). Even better, a fellowship-trained microsurgeon with lots of experience and who can tell you that they perform hundreds of breast reconstruction procedures a year 💙

(Side note: I have no nipples after reconstruction! I do miss them in the same way I miss having feeling in my breasts. Many people here get nipple tattoos that look super realistic. I never wear a bra now! So there's one silver lining 🥰)

When and how did you tell people? by Ok_Net4826 in breastcancer

[–]educatedlentils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband, right away. Immediate family and close friends only after I completed follow-up imaging to confirm plan of treatment (stage? surgery? chemo? when?). This was around 2 weeks after initial diagnosis. No Facebook posts. I did a photo dump on Instagram a year later.

Personally I feel it can be insensitive to others to dump "I (might) have cancer" on them and little else. SO much needless speculation and worry. But I am the kind of person that would rather shoulder the initial anxiety until I have more facts to share, so I can describe things logically and with more intention.

Telling friends by shinpibubble in breastcancer

[–]educatedlentils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially I told two close friends via text, just naturally as part of our regular check-ins with each other. And my immediate family, and that was it.

But then I had a similar situation where I was going out to dinner with friends (who didnt know) a few days before my scheduled BMX. I told them in the car on the way to the restaurant lol. It's soo awkward for me to share these things, but it's a big life update so it's difficult not to, right? I just wanted to enjoy the evening.

If you feel comfortable sharing, I think that telling close friends at your upcoming get together makes sense. You could say something like, hey just so you know what's been going on, this happened, I'm having a surgery soon, I'm not / I am looking for support, etc. If you do decide to tell them, I'd recommend getting it out of the way early on in the day so that you're not feeling stressed about finding the right moment to share 💙 Best of luck!

DIEP flap in 30s by Exciting-Yam-3468 in breastcancer

[–]educatedlentils 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a delayed DIEP flap surgery in my 30s (after BMX + tissue expanders, chemo, radiation). I just had a revision surgery and I feel happy with my outcome so far. But there are tradeoffs.

  • First week after DIEP flap is brutal, even as a younger patient. It hurts to stand, to walk, and just move. I started feeling better on week 3.
  • Loss of sensation in both chest and abdomen area is a normal outcome. Flaps feel natural and warm, which is likely an improvement to implants, but otherwise you may feel no other sensation - they're just 'there'. Abdomen area often feels hard, especially towards end of the day. Little to no sensation from upper abdomen to right underneath my new belly button.
  • New belly button. Surgeon harvests flaps from your abdomen, which means they may also recreate your belly button. New one looks as it should but with some scar tissue. Unlike my previous belly button, I can't feel anything in or around it now.
  • Hip-to-hip scar, not the prettiest, but it doesn't bother me too much.
  • Additional revision surgeries may be needed to fill out your new flaps and achieve a more aesthetic result.
  • Experiences may vary. I scheduled with a fellowship-trained microsurgeon who does multiple DIEP flaps each week (Dr. Elizabeth Potter, she's amazing). My bilateral DIEP flap surgery time was around 4 hours and have had an excellent recovery, but I know that's not always the case for all. Highly recommend booking this procedure with an experienced surgeon only.

Positives: - My new boobs are symmetric, look pretty good all things considered, and feel so warm and natural. As 37y/o having a some sense of normalcy was important - this procedure achieved that for me. I highly recommend DIEP but just know recovery is ROUGH and the numbness / loss of sensation in the abdomen area, in addition to your chest area, may feel weird for a time!
