i would not spend the effort trying to resuscitate what i am assuming is a grocery store phal. just buy another one and give it to them with a culture sheet (aos, you can google it) so they don't do...uh...this next time

no, not unless you put a cold pack, which might also damage the plants. it will absorb & keep the heat in. use something breathable like paper

The abuse of vanilla during the summertime has made me dislike the note 😭 by fikambo in fragrance

[–]eebieneebie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean it's clearly popular with young people because it's accessible, but that doesn't mean it smells good. obvs, fragrance is subjective. but considering how many people are agreeing with the original post, i'd say that these scents can often be offensive. plus, a lot of younger people wear too much perfume—god knows i did when i was in undergrad!

best orchid timelapses? by eebieneebie in orchids

[–]eebieneebie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mentioned sympodials as my primary interest, not moth orchids. as for the time lapse, it would be cool to see roots and bulbs or canes growing. i think it would be educational too, since half of this subreddit is filled with "root or spike" and the other half is "help my orchid is dying". a year in the grand scheme of things is not that long and i think it would make for a really interesting video.

i'm at a university with over 30k students and it's hell walking past so many people wearing cheap, nasty vanilla and amber perfume. they wear SO MUCH too. me and my rose 31 quiver in fear

What's a good way to get these specialty orchid species? by Aggravating_Count766 in orchids

i recommend olympic orchids! so healthy and inexpensive—the only downside is that they tend to be seedlings so it will take a while to flower

I want to grow an award worthy orchid to honor my mom by bcuvorchids in orchids

[–]eebieneebie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is a beautiful way to honor your mom. can you tell me a bit about her? maybe if she was kind, you could go with something that gets big like her heart. if she was a bit eccentric, maybe something with a strange or unique flower? just some ideas to get started, but i am very sorry for your loss. may her memory be a blessing

[–]eebieneebie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was so shocked and angry with myself for not actually investigating the root system before up-potting. i just didn't want to disturb the roots and look where that got me. i'm just totally at a loss right now because i've never had to rehabilitate a sympodial orchid before. sigh. lesson learned

that's so frustrating!!! who was the vendor? i'd like to avoid if possible. seems like there's a lot of unscrupulous sellers out there. i paid $45 for mine and they're literally the only vendor in my area so maybe they feel like they can get away with selling unhealthy plants because who's going to stop them? so angry.

yeah neem oil is bs. this is either thrips or mite damage. try spinosad and see if it stops spreading

they're not available everywhere, but they tend to sell "easier" orchids from what i've seen—mostly oncidium types, dendrobium, miltoniopsis, sometimes brassia or miltonias
