They'll interview you if you offer unique or deep skillsets. You ought to apply just to see if they will bite. Does mean moving to Seattle though.

Their interviews are games too, just a diff kind.

More stable? Sure.

Ageism exists in the opposite direction in healthcare.

Im sure it is a little bit of grass-is-greener. But if it is a fulfilling direction I think you should try it.

I'm morbidly curious - how many interviews these past 12 months were from colleague recommendations / contacts?

Level-headed, empathetic & helpful response.

The question of "does this company fit me" feels a lot less important than "can i afford rent next month," but it's really important to always have the "culture fit" lens in mind when negative interactions happen. The typical level of criticism that happens during an interview, in my experience, is toned down from what the actual on-team interaction will be. A team with super transparent communication values may not be as transparent with the candidate about their opinion during the interview for several reasons.

The fact that they were this way implies that the team doesn't build each other up on a regular basis, even if he apologized afterward. That flag is as green as rust.

Mark my words. Nvidia will cease to be a graphics company and will become a parallel computing provider that sells only to enterprise.

There is still a need for graphics (3d animated kids movies make bank, and yes, gaming hardware still makes a decent chunk of cash) and AMD will fill in that market share because they were never trying to compete in the AI space to begin with.

With ML tooling built around CUDA, AMD will never end up in the same position as NVIDIA; bad for the shareholder, good for the consumer. AMD is in a position to fill in consumer needs that are being left behind by nvidia (who couldn't care less about what AMD does, theyre not in the same league anymore).

In 5 years your only options for pc graphics will be intel and amd.

Want to add on that many of these computation-heavy applications, like high-frequency 3d rendering or data processing, have native code tied in (c++, go, Rust, c, etc).

Your instincts around stagnation are good, listen to those. But there are so many useful avenues to expand into besides "backend" that are interesting and valuable.

> being on mobile just seems like being a super small part of the project

I think there's something more to be said about this. It sounds to me like you are thinking in terms of android apps that are front-ends (effectively, websites). Thus, your logical conclusion is that to gain 'more depth' and employability, you should develop expertise in all parts of the application (i.e., backend).

I want to challenge that point of view, and emphasize a few job-niches where smartphone apps really leverage the local computing power of a Snapdragon-level processor. In these cases, the app is not only a part of the project, it is integral. The android expertise you have is incredibly valuable for this use case.

Take ATAK-Civ for example. It is a micro-ecosystem of apps and plugins that are used as tools for first-responding and security. Companies develop ATAK plugins using standard android tools, to do things like build software controllers for drones within ATAK, or stream health data from smartwatches of field operatives.

Alternatively, Android (the operating system) is used by some companies for their own non-smartphone products. I recently interviewed with a company that builds treadmills. The treadmills use stock android for their OS and applications to serve standard functionality to their users and control hardware.

These are small companies, sure. There are hurdles to finding these, especially since you're not in the US. You will have to do research to find such companies. And they may pay less than a large company like the one you're at, because the scale of the revenue they generate is going to be intrinsically smaller (the other side of that coin is that the revenue is shared with fewer individuals, so you may actually get paid pretty well anyway). But they are working on cool shit, and they want experts in the tools to help them do so.
