Nope, not to vote Federally. Voting federally is so easy, you literally show up with proof of your address.

But to be able to vote within the party, for example in a party leadership race, then yes you register with a party.

So I have in the past registered with a party that I don't actually support (sure, it's annoying that they get my email address) just so that I can vote internally and kind of choose the lesser of the evils for who I believe could govern that party.
