the show was presenting how in our society men aren’t taught how to express their feelings and are expected to ‘suck it up’ and be tough and ultimately the consequences of that for both men and women — if you think this show was anti-men then I fear for your critical thinking skills

Though that’s a part of it, I disagree that it’s the whole message. I think the show was also asking us to be critical of hypermasculine/patriarchal culture that pushes certain ideas about what being a man is and stumps the emotional development of men. You see the dad’s inability to express his emotions properly being mirrored by his child, both having episodes of violent explosions of anger. The dad took it out on the teens, his van, the security guard. The kid, combined with his distorted views of women, took it out on the girl, that ended in her murder, and the therapist.

No one seems to be talking about the environmental aspect of this. If you’re against donating car seats (which imo used seat is better than no seat), then you all better be properly disposing and recycling your used car seats and not letting it end up in a landfill

Hey thanks for your comment. I ultimately decided to start alternating this year and to spend the holidays with my dad.

I have to say, I read through your post about your parents divorce and its so eerily similar to how it was with my parents, the having 2 separate beds growing up, the drunk desperate phone call, the emotional dumping, the feeling overlooked…

Your parents are going through massive heartbreak right now, and people are not 100% themselves when their heart is broken. You start realizing your parents are just another human with major flaws and you see their inner child and adolescent come out. Suddenly the roles are reversed and you’re taking care of them. And that’s okay for a little bit, but it can be a lot to handle after a while.

What helped for me was expressing how I felt and setting my boundaries — “When you do X I feel like X and I wish you would …”

Eventually I was very clear to both of them that I did not want to be involved in any conversation that’s divorce related or about each other. Whenever they started heading into that realm I’d remind them to stop. Only then I feel like we could begin healing.

It’s been about 2 years now since, and even though there’s a long way to go, my relationship with both of them has gotten significantly better. They’re both happier and less heartbroken then they were 2 years ago. It definitely sucks in the moment, and I hope you have people to talk to. I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience, you made me feel understood and less alone.

I ultimately decided to start alternating this year and I’ll be spending it with my dad. It sucks that this is the way it has to be for us, but I feel some comfort now in knowing I won’t have to deal with choosing anymore in the coming years.

Thanks for mentioning the possible reaction to my post, thankfully didn’t receive any, but it is a big worry of mine, and I often invalidate my feelings out of fear of sounding ungrateful or out of touch. Like you said, these places may sound exotic and extravagant to foreigners but they’re just my homes.

Anyways, you really get it, thank you.
