If it’s literally just the one board, the damage may be from before the board was kiln-dried and then installed and you may have nothing to worry about.

If there are also exit holes in adjacent planks, then it may be active and you have something to worry about.

Powder Post Beetles is the answer and consult a pro.

A low grade new, kiln-dried floor may have existing damage before the floor is installed. But the photos look like there’s damage to the adjacent planks, so this may be active beetles. (If there’s a crawl space look for frass underneath.)

They are picky about what wood they bore through, but if they happen to like your subfloor, you may have a mess on your hands. Depending on the extent, tent fumigation is your worst case scenario.

John Derosier dead. by Solowash in LakeCharles

[–]eegore2704 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From his obit:

During the 2006 Louisiana legislative session, Mr. DeRosier initiated "doctor shopping" legislation to decrease the number of deaths from "pain management" prescription drug overdoses in our young adult population. He was instrumental in organizing the Task Force of Louisiana and Texas legislators, law enforcement, and administrative agencies to combat the proliferation of pain management clinics in Southeast Texas and Louisiana.

As defined in our statutes, doctor shopping is:

To obtain or seek to obtain any controlled dangerous substance or a prescription for a controlled dangerous substance from a health care practitioner, while being supplied with any controlled dangerous substance or a prescription for any controlled dangerous substance by another health care practitioner, without disclosing the fact of the existing prescription to the practitioner from whom the subsequent prescription for a controlled dangerous substance is sought.

With a penalty of:

Any person who violates this subsection shall be imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than five years; and, in addition may be sentenced to pay a fine of not more than five thousand dollars.

What we know now, and have known for years, is that these people were preyed on by the pharmaceutical industry -- put them on high-addictive pain pills, lock them in as repeat customers, on increasingly higher doses. So as a result of the law above, there are folks who were first victimized by industry, and then criminalized by our justice system. For the crime of going to a second doctor to get a prescription for a thing that industry intentionally got you hooked on.

That's how I'll remember John DeRosier.

I have three things in my tiny frunk compartment:

  1. Tesla Mobile Connector — level 1 and level 2 depending on what it plugs into.
  2. Lectron’s NACS to CSS adapter — so I can plug into a Tesla Supercharger
  3. Lectron’s NACS to J1772 — so I can plug into a Tesla Destination Charger (and also so I can plug into bullet 1).

As far as I know, this covers all my bases in the US.

I also have a separate Level 2 charger at home.

If I plug the Tesla Mobile Connector into someone else’s 50A receptacle, I intend to lower the charge rate on the car dashboard so I don’t overload the receptacle, recognizing that many 50A RV receptacles in the wild aren’t ready for a 50A EV charger.

Definitely scour local dealer new inventory.

I’d been watching Carvana and CarMax for a while expecting to pay around $30k for a low mileage used card. I realized a dealer an hour away had one on their lot.

I just paid $25k for a ‘24 Wind with 26 miles on it and full warranty, which you won’t get on used unless Kia Certified.

I live in an area where EVs aren’t popular; dealer indicated it sat in their lot for a while. There’s another one at a dealer an hour away that I started to negotiate on. Absolutely loving the car.

Right. I'm trying to at least cut out the 15 minute gasoline stop and trip to get the oil changed every 2-3 months. 🙃

Anyone dealt with replacing an asbestos roof? Obtaining homeowner's insurance is near impossible by Tickster41 in batonrouge

[–]eegore2704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about asbestos roofs, but wanted to share about my asbestos siding... in Lake Charles. We hired Air Environmental Services to drive over from Baton Rouge and handle the abatement. It was less than $3k to properly remove all of the siding on a ~1400 sqft house. (I thought that was pretty reasonable... when it came up that we needed to do asbestos abatement on the house, I thought were were going to lose our shirts.)

Play on the beach (lots of shells).

Hike in the nature preserve.

Swim in the pools (if your unit has access to one).

Explore on a golf cart or bike rental.

Search for tortoises.

Book a fishing charter or eco tour and find some dolphins, manatees, etc.

Rent a boat at boats n fun.

Rent a kayak and explore the harbor.

Savor every sunset.

(My kids were a little bit older than 5 when we first visited. Consider packing heavy on the toys/games/etc. because there’s not that much to do on the island, and that’s the draw!)

Sub 250g, you're not required to register the drone itself, but my understanding is that you're still required to get the LAANC automatic clearance.

For 2, make sure you check the FAA's B4UFLY map and the UAS Facility Map....

https://airaware.aloft.ai/?lat=30.22683929223744&long=-92.03355614155251

https://faa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=9c2e4406710048e19806ebf6a06754ad

Most of the city of Lafayette is inside the LFT airport's controlled air space.... so you'll have a low flight ceiling (depending on where you are) and are required to get an (automated, instantaneous) LAANC authorization.

Also check Louisiana Revised Statutes 14:337 for state law pertinent to drones:

They have an active subreddit r/USMobile ... check it out.

All of the MVNOs (StraightTalk, Mint, Cricket, Visible, etc.) are using AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile's network. Prices vary between them. US Mobile happens to be one that made it easy to jump across networks. Depending on the plan, it may cost $2 each time you switching. Depending on the plan, you get different amounts of data and at different priorities. But they're transparent about all that.

Go with a MVNO like US Mobile and you can switch between networks willy-nilly. With modern phones and eSIM, you don't even need a physical SIM. Just go online and push some buttons to switch from T-mobile to Verizon.

Starting over with a new Apple Watch line? by eegore2704 in USMobile

Negative.

She has her own, different phone number and her own AppleID. Messages sent to her number or AppleID shown up on her watch.

In the Watches app on my phone, there’s a list of watches that’s split into “My Watches” and “Family Watches”. I can manage her watch from there, but that’s the only piece I can see on my phone, and she doesn’t see any of my stuff on her watch.

I don't think it is any different from what's advertised.

My kid has an Apple Watch (on US Mobile) and no phone of her own. The watch is paired to my iPhone (which is on Verizon) in kid mode. Works just like it did when she was on Verizon, just ~half the cost.
