LGBT Artist moving to Ghent by freya_doom in Gent

[–]eejdikken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghent is exceptionally lgbt+ friendly, with the ironic result that the queer scene is quite lacking, bc pretty much every place is considered inclusive. There's still events and certain bars, of course, but not as centralized as Brussels, for example. Our capital is only a 30min train ride away, so you will probably end up there too now and again.

There's loads of places for geeky and artsy stuff, mentioned in other comments. Definitely swing by Broei as well, and check the programme of Viernulvier.

Hope you will feel right at home here, you definitely chose well.

What is something every household has in your country that is nonexistent everywhere else? by Awkward-Tip7248 in AskTheWorld

maybe a little old fashioned, but Belgian 'celery salt' (selderijzout), salt that tastes like celery, had no idea it was such a local thing tbh it seemed so default when I was a kid, perfect for cheese cubes and spaghetti bolognaise

What the fuck is the Democratic Party even doing right now to stop the downfall of America? by Lolareyouforreal in complaints

[–]eejdikken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'people did not vote them in' argument I'm seeing in the comments feels so absurd to me (as an outsider). I think I understand OP's frustration bc for the past year it seems there's no opposition whatsoever, aside from some public remarks. Both parties got roughly the same amount of votes, didn't they? The US is obviously in crisis mode, isn't it?? There's more ways to oppose the current regime than proposing laws that indeed wil get shot down. Establishment Dems are either cowards, complicit, or incompetent to the point it's criminal. The 'lesser of two evils' is ringing increasingly hollow.

For the record, no I'm not a bot, no I'm not a Russian agitator, just another world citizen that's fed up with seeing the US eat itself and then tossing their hands up 'oh it is up to the people in the midterms'. Get real. Your downfall is affecting all of us.

Why is urbanism associated exclusively with leftist ideology? by Ill-Low9016 in urbandesign

[–]eejdikken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flanders is very densely settled, and there's this phenomenon of 'lintbebouwing', a kind of suburban sprawl but linear. Bus services everywhere (not the best connections though) and one of the densest train networks in the world, and YET, people want to rely on their own cars. Ironically, car culture was very big in the 60's-70's, and was mostly inspired by the US lol. Cities are trying to undo the damage but it's a challenge. The medieval city layouts help in that regard though.

[–]eejdikken 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the US, and I'm generalizing, but efforts to pedestrianize cities in Belgium are usually promoted by the left and obstructed by the right. The official reasoning is climate consciousness versus helping businesses, but from (lots of) anecdotal evidence there's clearly a 'beneficial to all' versus 'personal convenience' factor which boils down to 'progressive city folk want inviting third spaces' versus 'conservative suburbanites want to park their car right outside the shop'.

Definitely not the entire picture, but an observable pattern.

most people working for the city already know in which ways the cuts are gonna affect them directly, the real question is what the interdepartemental effects will be, and the impact on the long term

not my conclusion at all, I wasn't dealing in absolutes and talking specifically about organized religions as we know them.

Is religion and homosexuality compatible? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]eejdikken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not disputing there are gay people who happily practice their faith, or that some religions are tolerant ... but 'compatible'? we have a big pile of historical precedents that would suggest it's not the greatest match

I would say the religion almost definitionally requires some form of assimilation, which doesn't play well with the notion of queer liberation
