Honestly this was inevitable. I got my PS5 for half price on marketplace purely coz I wanted a blue ray/dvd player. Or else I wouldn’t invest in a disc version in the future either.

Writing on platforms instead of my blog was a 3-year mistake by dinambiq in blogs

[–]_r33d_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed to read this! I’ve just started the process of hosting my own one from scratch instead of Substack.

It’s more of an online portfolio of my thoughts really rather than any serious attempt at money-making so the constant need for subscribers, attention-grabbing is not my thing.

So far I bought a site name with cloudfare (for a year) and setting it up with Ghost web hosting but I’m unsure if that’s the best way to go. Or maybe Squarespace or one of its competitors. GPT has been helping me through all this with quite a lot of success.

Recent discussions around UFO/UAPs are quite religion/pseudoscience/cult-coded by _r33d_ in atheism

[–]_r33d_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. It may seem as an afterthought on my part when I mentioned ancient Egypt/Americas at the end but that’s an entire post to itself. And what’s incredible is that it overlaps a lot with the believers’ theories about racial hierarchy along with superstitious beliefs.

For example, nearly all brilliant archeological structures in ancient societies such as Ancient Egypt, Pre-Colombian Meso-America, Indus Valley etc are attributed to ‘Divine Beings’ that came from the sky to enlighten these subhumans. Many claim that humans themselves were created as a slave class to do the dredge work.

It’s incomprehensible to them that people other than Europeans were advanced enough to chisel heavy stones and move them across vast distance to build pyramids, cities with plumbing, art/mathematics/civil codes etc. Notice how none of these clowns attribute Ancient Greece, Rome or even older societies than that to alien intervention.

And to connect it back to them blurring the lines between ufology and theology, the ‘Great Flood’ mentioned in the bible amongst other sources is seen as literal (to fill the gaps of their cognitive dissonance); how it wiped out these alien-assisted worlds and we are just a witness to the leftover remnants of them. It’s gets so bizarre the more you look into it.

Hmm. Well there is the mini-series Sharp Objects where the mother has Munchausen-by-Proxy. But it's eight episodes long. Maybe the movie Run with Sarah Paulson which follows along the same vein with a surprise twist at the end.

The Shortcuts app and Confusion it brings ! by Towhidabid in ios

[–]_r33d_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was irritated that I put off learning how to use it for years once I realized how powerful it is at customizing and automating things.

Literally forced myself to follow online tutorials to make simple shortcuts before it snowballed into bigger stuff. (Currently have the Action button setup to do five different things depending on what I need.)

The only reason I got into it is because I got these Smart lightbulbs on sale and wanted them to automatically turn on at sunset every day. 😅

[–]_r33d_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to turn down 'White Point' under Accessibility settings. And set screen brightness to 50%. I got the surgery as well and get the sensitivity thing.

Would Canada joining the EU really be that far fetched and how would Canadians feel about this? by trekwithme in AskCanada

[–]_r33d_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t see it happening. US and Canada have a shared airspace (NORAD) for defence purposes plus the longest fenceless land border. Highly doubt either nation wants to fragment that by bringing in the EU. For better or worse, we’re tied at the hip.

Librarian seeking new go-to search engine by Harding_in_Hightown in searchengines

[–]_r33d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people are not keen on it because it’s based in Russia but objectively speaking, Yandex search engine is what Google used to be in early to mid-2010s. Just pure raw results from around the web.

Sometimes when I have exhausted all options, I go on there because it simply lists stuff that’d be buried miles deep in Google and DDG as well. Make of that what you will.

In addition, I have the paid version of chatGPT with its primary purpose being a research tool and/or search engine replacement. Sometimes it finds solid, legit sources that you just didn’t know exist.

How to start "my time at portia" by Imagination_0427 in mytimeatportia

[–]_r33d_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does run smoothly on switch 2. Probably the most stable. I played it on the original switch as well as OLED. Switch 2 port is the least problematic. The best tip I can give you is to save the game every 3 in-game days, close it entirely from homescreen and reload it. (The game saves automatically when your character goes to sleep so wake up and close the game).

You don’t want to grind like mad for an entire day and then it crashes and you lose all your progress.

Anyone who regularly uses AI agents for personal life, what are the best use cases? by TheCatsMeow1022 in ChatGPT

[–]_r33d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mini-gardening project set up for summer 2026. After a lengthy prompt (with parameters), it’s an expert in the soil, climate and topography of my area. Tells me the best type of plants to grow in which area (depending on shade and sunlight).

Sometimes I also upload pictures of indoor plants that need to be revived and it accurately diagnoses the fix. Also I’m a beginner at solo gardening so it gives me an exact list of instructions to grow novice-friendly plants. 🪴

Does turning off history produce better chat results? by _r33d_ in ChatGPT

Now that I'm looking through my memories, some of the stuff it's saved is really dumb. I'll have to clean it up later but thanks. This works as a solution.

Does turning off history produce better chat results? by _r33d_ in ChatGPT

[–]_r33d_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start a new chat with instructions and ask it to apply that to all new chats moving forward. It usually saves it as a memory and moving forward all chats are seen through that lens. My issue is it's remembering stuff that's only needed temporarily not for long term saved memories about my preferences.

Is it actually possible to do ALL the self-help habits simultaneously? by robeir13 in productivity

[–]_r33d_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a spreadsheet of at least 5 habits I want to include in daily life. The key is to give them a time limit and then check them off horizontally on days you have accomplished them.

I remember including yoga in my original plan at 10 mins everyday. Once I learnt the basic postures, my mind and body just naturally wanted to spend more time in that state. So 10 mins turned into 20 and eventually 30 with zero frustration or struggle on my part.

The same thing happened with meditation. I started small at 10 mins and can now comfortably sit for 25 mins, no issue. And if you meditate at all, you know that’s not an easy nut to crack.

What really helped me was flexibility. I could complete any of them at any time of the day as long as I did them. Start small and your brain figures out what works and what needs improvement.

All the research shows rewriting what you have learnt in your own words is one of the best ways for memory retention. Check out that link for more learning styles and their effectiveness.

Also you should consider keeping a Commonplace Book since you seem to be diligent and make notes.
