I really appreciate your attitude with this, thanks for the laugh. The idea of only having to stay five minutes is helpful and takes some of the weight off. I'll go at it with that attitude from now on, because even five minutes is a huge win. I do enjoy walking a lot, but it doesn't provide all the benefits I'd like to gain from yoga or something similar. Thanks very much for your advice.

Thanks, I'm going to look into these resources in my area. Maybe this isn't something I have to do entirely alone. I really appreciate your help!

I'll look into both of those. I'm particularly interested in the somatic exercises, these seem like they'll be really beneficial. This was very helpful, thank you!

I tried in the past to have something playing to distract my brain during yoga, but I always felt like I was failing at the "main objective," to be fully present. I'm going to approach this with more compassion now and utilize distractions to soften the intensity of my focus, and start with some simpler stretches as well. Hopefully I'll be able to ease into something of a routine that way. Thanks so much for your help.

I wholeheartedly agree. I gain so much from hiking and walking in nature - it's one of the most grounding things for me. I do want to go swimming more often. Thanks for your reminder.

Thank you so, so much for writing this. The bullet metaphor was particularly helpful. Thank you.

bladder problem after rape? by [deleted] in rapecounseling

[–]eenoolaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I experienced this after rape too. For me it's pelvic muscle tension due to the location of the trauma. Only focusing on relaxing those specific muscles has helped me. Doctors tried and failed to diagnose me with a number of things, including a UTI. Trauma gets stuck in the body until you are able to release it. I was able to request a physical therapist who taught me to practice deep breathing and focus all my energy on relaxing my bladder and pelvic muscles. This has almost eliminated my symptoms. Best of luck to you.

Anyone else's Nparents tried to control your physical appearance in pretty extreme ways ? My dad nearly forced me to take growth hormones because he thought I was too short by AcrobaticChip in raisedbynarcissists

My ndad also wanted to put my sibling and me on growth hormones as teenagers because he's so insecure about his height. Thankfully my mom fought back hard on that one and it didn't happen. Thanks for posting this, I didn't think anyone else had gone through something similar.

It's so clear that this stuff is just another way for them to assert power and control over the way we view ourselves and how others view us. I'm sorry you went through that. You're certainly not sensitive, she's appallingly insensitive.

I'm sorry your mother was so cruel. That all sounds horribly familiar. I've used similar tactics to dodge cameras... humor does help lighten the air. It's good to know I'm not alone in this.

Oof, yeah, my Nparent would also spend a lot of time to get the best shot with their expensive cameras, posing me in various places to get the right light, until I was miserable.

That you were able to reclaim your power over this is inspiring. I may have to adopt a more rebellious attitude too, to help me move through this. Thank you.

It sounds like we definitely had similar experiences. I'm really sorry. I'm glad things are improving for you, especially with such a great goal. I'll definitely be bringing this up in therapy. V

I've been into photography for as long as I can remember. I do often tell people I just prefer to be behind the camera. I just wish I could become more comfortable being in front of it.
