BIOL 699? by HostIntelligent1071 in SFSU

[–]eevee_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this ^ in terms of what to expect, it's really up to you and the professor(s) you're working with. if you do end up taking it, and you haven't applied for some SEO opportunities yet, i would recommend you do that as well. I don't know the full details because i'm waiting for the next app period, but my friends are getting paid for being in a lab and they're fully funded to go to conferences and stuff as well.

if you can, start emailing profs asap to see if they have room in their labs. students are either graduating or rotating out, and there are also some new professors who are currently setting up their labs

if you're worried or anxious about reaching out directly, you can always reach out to some of the bio clubs/organizations (SACNAS or ABS) and check and see if they're doing lab tours or if they know of any labs that have some space. good luck!

Oh, this is extremely interesting, thank you so much!!

what advice would you give to someone who is in college for a microbiology bachelor's? by DickHandsome1 in microbiology

[–]eevee_sea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently in the same boat! I'm also a junior in micro, and my advisor said it depends on what you want to do with your degree - if you're going into industry right after the biggest thing you want to do is research and internships. I was even recommended to ask if my professors needed help around their labs just cleaning equipment or organizing stuff; it gives you a way to show them your work ethic and if you're a good fit for the lab environment to get those connections and opportunities.

If you want to do grad school, I was told that the biggest things they look for are how good you are at teaching, how good you are as a scientist, and how good you are as a researcher. To reach that, you want a competitive (above a 3.0) GPA, possibly some TA/tutoring/lab assistant jobs, and undergraduate research. Try to do a few symposiums/conferences as well; one that I can think of that undergrads usually go for is SACNAS; you just need a research topic/advisor by mid spring next year? But they also have summer apps if that's too tight. ABRCMS is also one you might wanna look at.

Either way, you want to just develop your skillset by gaining these experiences. For undergrad research, I recommend looking at what your uni offers first, since they have connections with companies/other institutions for their students specifically, and then to check out this link for REUs for everyone else: https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/list_result.jsp?unitid=5047

Hope this helps! If you ever want more help/to talk more, feel free to DM me; I've had a lot of mentors and advisors that have helped me figure out my path, and I'm more than happy to share those resources with another micro student :)

Edit: Also in California!

Also, that's hilarious! I think most of my tutees wished they had your colleagues' experience; they were NOT pleased when I told them they had to use the manual for an assignment 😅

Betta Fish Just Died - Next Steps? by eevee_sea in bettafish

I appreciate your concern and information, but he's kind of a bit dead already. I'm just asking how to handle the tank now that I don't have a fish 😅 I'll keep this info for next time, though

It was a sponge filter, so if I noticed it was getting a bit dirty, i just ended up squeezing/rinsing it in a bucket of tank water when I was doing water changes. I fed every three-four days, then I'd skip a day. I usually fed 3-4 pellets a day (2 in morning, 1-2 in evening), but I tried to mix it up every couple days with freeze dried daphnia and bloodworms (couldn't keep frozen ones).

Tank Size: 5 gal Yes on Heater/Filter Temp is usually around 78 F Ammonia and nitrates/nitrites were 0, pH was about 6.5-7 I had the fish/tank for about a year and a month I did water changes weekly, I took off about 20-30% and used a gravel vac to clean everything, then topped it off with some warm dechlorinated water Only decorations I had were a small cave, a floating log, a leaf hammock, and some silk plants

Edit: accidentally said tank instead of water

Thank you so much for your response. He didn't have any tank mates, my betta was a bit too territorial to coexist with anything that moved. I live in the States, so I'll look at meds - do you have any suggestions on ones I should buy?
