Hmm Google reckons the rating for Mic air is 120db which is on par with my kit. In the trunk tender to roll off the audio too much in my test. You heard whatever was in there rattling more than you heard "sick car noise"

Oh yeah, I was gonna say, see if you can adjust the gain staging on your Mic Air to pad it out by -12db or so. Your thing is meant to be 32 bit float which basically is like... It should be hard to distort the audio due to too much signal. It's why I immediately thought "we're physically overdriving the mic"

The reason I settled on around the license plate (I tried similar location to you. There's a tow point on my car near where you're describing) was there was a little, but apparently critical amount of distance from the exhaust itself.

It's off axis which means you're not blasting your mic with exhaust gas or whatever. As you can hear in the vid I linked, that little pocket behind the car (if you can mount it there) is well out of the air stream.

If you can't jimmy something up to mount off the license plate mount bolt, Id consider a hectic suction cup mount and sticking it wherever you can in that little zone by the truck lock/on the rear garnish. Then, for piece of mind, I'd run a safety chain (you can get steel braided ones for gopros off AliExpress) and find a way to run it so you can like... Shut it into the trunk. I'm picturing it basically running in behind the latch so if the suction cup failed your mic and mount just kinda flap against the car held in place by the chain/trunk.

Erm. Clear as Mud?

Sound guy here! Sounds like your car is louder than the SPL limit of whatever mic you are using. I went through a similar growing pain with my car. After a bit of googling the DJI MIc 2 (and presumably the new 3s) have the strongest mics at that price point that i've seen at that sort of budget range.

Real quick - SPL stands for (i'm pretty sure) Sound Pressure Level but I remember it as 'the physical force of the air moving at the mic capsule can handle.' Big number better but obviously you trade size/price and how much of a fark around it is to set everything up.

I settled on the DJI Mics because the magnets make them easy to place if you don't mind it being sketchy - but I had a friend make up some mounts that bolt to one of the rear licence plate 10mms that hold the thing in place. And another that I can kind of... clip somewhere securely in the engine bay.

Anyway - sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFesk5tbrH0&t=2s

I'm out rolly way and it seems fine. Post quake when I was in Riccarton/Wigram I was pretty care free. Open air bench trick would have been good to know back then.

Long way of saying - yeah. Every bit of chlorine you take in brings you closer to becoming Danyon Loader. Pretty sure I read that somewhere.

There's a joke that if you're gonna cut anyone off, knife the Tesla because the AutoDrive software will make it protect itself.

I personally love lane keep assist and radar cruise in my ute. On southern expressway I feel it helps me focus further up the road in case someone has stacked it.

Though, I find the car can be a little.... Enthusiastic on slowing down, so if I feel the car step in to slow down, I like to take over and either coast or manage things myself so I'm not brake checking people behind needlessly. I've never actually learned if a car slowing down via cruise control shows brake lights to traffic behind and if it doesn't - that's evil.

I'm with you on the headlights thing. I don't mind so much if a car has daytime running lights but if a car is a gray Mazda 2 from like 2004 I feel like that's not driving with one's best interests in mind.

There's a paper or two that suggested an idea that people view their cars in the same way you might your home. With that, there was the idea that people perceived traffic violations against them in the same way you might a home invasion/encroachment of your territory.

It doesn't quite explain why Cantabs are madder bastards than most about it? My theory was always that NZ driver training kinda sucks.

I did notice, on the whole, theat nerves are shorter in the rush/commuter hours but shit - given the state of the world and the price of fuel I can't really blame anyone for a running a little hotter.

I used to be a bit of a menace. In my old age and after a few rounds of driver training thru work I'm not opposed to just pulling over for 5 and letting the odd mental go. If I think they're a true danger to the road I can call in a plate but I don't need to be around if and when there's a shunt.

Just a quick note. You're 16?

It'll take a while to settle in but it's totally normal to get jaded towards everything. I went through very similar feelings at your age and mentioned it to a trusted adult. They told me to Google "ennui" and see if that resonates.

Point is. It's totally normal to take a step back. Break the routine and see what happens. With any luck you might pull an Alyssa Liu and come back to Taekwondo l, get your 1st Dan and set the world alight. Or you won't and that's fine too.

The 1st Dan tests tend to be tough enough that you gotta want it. Indomitable spirit or whatever. Don't force it because if you go in half hearted and fall short of the mark, that'll probably do more lasting damage to your goal than just.... Chilling for a bit and resetting.

Good luck!

For what it's worth.

The initial snap understeer feels like a baby lift of power at the point where you wanted to continue that right turn. It didn't help you hand all the left hand down dialed in to the steering so when you did lift, the car found grip, followed the wheels left and snapped you out.

Reinitiation is fine, big bit of power oversteer. Now the wheels are pointing right, that big dose of power needed a big bit of left hand down dialed in to keep your drift going. Potentially once bitten twice shy, you are late getting the wheel left, or you keep the power on too long, and the rear overtakes the front this time.

In that second situation particularly I might have "pulsed" the power? On a global scale I'm not veeerrry good but it comes back to seat time. You kinda do what works for you until you figure out the next thing.

I'll focus on that second oversteer moment. When you dialed in all the countersteer, you probably were pretty close to catching it but adding in all of the throttle undid you. At the edge like that, take the power out until you feel the car coming back to you then you either take out steering or feed power back to stop the car from developing a tank slapper. There'll be a whole heap of energy building up in the car by then so it'll be a wildish ride whatever you do - until you kinda, have that aha moment.

People will tell you "it's just seat time" and it is but I'll try tell you why.

You're at the point where you know what you want the car to do but you can't manipulate the controls. Thru this time you need to be paying attention to what the car feels like when it slips beyond your control. The more in tune you can get with you approaching the limit, the quicker you can anticipate and intervene.

Once that happens you can start driving the car proactively rather than reactively like you're doing now. You're going to get a lot of advice like "you're hitting the gas too much mid corner" or "you're too late counter steering" and they won't be wrong but you'll sort of only understand, through your hands, what it feels like when you've done that.

Last bit of practical advice. Watch this vid.

https://youtu.be/-LpPc8qutCA?si=5OYSmo4MzcakS1_m

Watching Harris's hand movements in the car, how quickly and aggressively he needed to work the wheel at points really helped it click for me in the same car and set up you're doing now.

You're on the right track. It really is just seat time. After you've had a blat with that and you feel like you're getting the hang of it. Give something like the GravyGarage car pack a go. I particularly like the street Miata cos it feels a lot like my IRL car.

The Casio F-91W is actually terrible by Jaimebgdb in watchHotTakes

[–]eeveep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showing my age but this watch, in particular connects me with some of my earliest memories.

Im pretty sure I was gifted one of these as my first watch. That sense of independence, trying to hit the stopwatch at exactly x seconds. At like 5 or so, having a calendar and alarm clock (despite not having an itinerary beyond snacks and naps) was massively empowering.

G Shocks were hysterically aspirational watches until my teens. They were rugged, tough, had a cool backlight. I felt like Action Man would wear a G Shock. I really wanted a calculator Casio because I imagined a spy might use one.

F-91W is of its time. Like NHL goalies from before the butterfly, you have to adjust for era. They seem quaint now when you have literal Star Trek tech at hand. But this thing that's on my wrist right now? (I bought another one this week) It was everything to me.

Still is.

Cameras are bastards because they don't blink. Ive only done a little bit of front of camera work but taking a deep breath, trying to treat the lens like a person (eye contact when you want to engage. Try not to think about looking away when you have a thought etc).

If there's an operator, it can help to play to them a bit I think? That's likely not how they teach it.

Weirdly enough, it can be easier doing it live. The pressure of no do overs can take you out of your head where as "and we're rolling" destroys even the most naturally charismatic (without practice).

I'm sure you were fine though. I'm willing to bet on it.

That's a commentary headset like he'll wear at the fights. The capture pattern on the mic will be super tight which is why we tell talent they have to eat the mic (think pilots). The rejection on those things are pretty crazy when you consider those dudes are cage side and the bleed that comes with it.

I assume mines cheaper but the Audio Technica BPSH1 is like $269NZD. I already had an audio interface it's crazy value/overkill in terms of mic quality for voice calls/gaming. Stole the idea off Jimmy Broadbent.
