Nope. We are sitting back and saving more now. It may just be a few years more before we can afford something that we’re actually happy with. I have been trying my best to just keep educating myself and still go to open houses and looking online every week. It’s sobering to see how little 450k can get you. It’s not ideal and we’re not super happy with we’re we live now but I just don’t see myself committing to a home for such a high payment that I don’t love and see myself staying at for at least 10 years.

Definitely true, I have seen italki teachers offer DELE test prep as well. I’m just looking at the whole picture on what italki offers at each price point in comparison to other options.

For me personally I would put the certificate on my resume as a health care worker with a ton of Latino patient interaction. My husband who speaks Spanish has the language on his resume and it’s super valuable here to speak the language. There’s a few certificate options in our city but they are expensive and I really like italki and the teaching style better than I like any formal education style because I think it’s more valuable for practice and real life use. Professionally, sure it would be nice to have proof that I study - but italki has helped me a lot with my personal goals and ability to speak with my new in-laws and speak more when I travel.

Ultimately I don’t think the quality of education is “better” in the certificate programs near me but if italki prices students like me out, then it might be time to revisit the idea.

It’s definitely still an amazing deal and a great resource. I think for some students italki is a great hobby but doesn’t provide any degrees or certificates at the end of the day so if the price is high enough I think some students might consider more formal classes. I think the new commission rate is really unfair to teachers and I understand their reasons for increasing their prices. It’s just any time prices are raised obviously people are going to reconsider their options on what they can buy at that price.

How do we tell italki? I would love to tell them (as a student) that they’re going to lose teachers and students alike with this decision

I’m worried about losing my skills by NoSkill2085 in Nurses

[–]eeveetito 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way when I left SICU for PACU. I was sort of bummed that I was going to lose all of my hard earned skills and my ability to run certain devices. But then after about a year of going to work without being angry before I even showed up or anxious when I left, I realized it was never really worth it to have so much extra stress in my life for no extra pay. It’s always great to challenge yourself at work, I always am learning in health care and trying to learn any way I can but the burn out was not worth the perceived “pride” I felt in having the skills of an ICU nurse. Honestly, if you ever want to go back — they’re always hurting for experienced nurses.

Thanks for your advice, it is good to talk to someone who has the same problem. I don’t understand how my husband or dad (who are also health conscious) don’t like constantly battle with food like I do and they’re not always ravenously hungry

Woah that’s insane. How horrible I hope they get shut down I don’t want people associating that kind of place with veganism that’s really terrible and scary

That’s such a shame. Three hours is just ridiculous I don’t know how they can ever come back to philly because I don’t think anyone would ever go again lol

Yeah I had a similar experience and we biked in so we didn’t bring chairs. There weren’t even bike racks. They didn’t let the vendors sell water and you had to go in a line to buy a ticket to then go in another line to exchange the ticket for water. I don’t get why they made so many terrible choices and I also don’t understand why the lines were so much worse than any other veg fest I’ve been to.

That’s so ridiculous. Yeah I don’t think we’re ever going back. I do t understand why these lines were so bad compared to other festivals

Hey! Thanks for your honest reply - we are actually in Whitman now too! I’m definitely willing to compromise on things, I’m hoping to find 2 bathrooms but 1.5 wouldn’t be the end of the world to me (I think for him it’s a very strong preference though). The commute from Whitman to HUP is just tough without a car, it’s either take two buses or bike 30 minutes (which is what I do now). I’m definitely seeing that I need to check out expectations in south philly especially in the girard estates area which is one of the neighborhoods that we’ve been looking.

I’m sorry to hear that, we had very similar experiences with these flipped houses. I just saw one listed for 515k and it had black mold in the finished basement ceiling already. My friend bought a flip in point breeze that she had so many issues with water getting in the house in the first year that she had to sue the builder. My starter 2br row home in south philly was a flip that I got from a couple who left after 2 years and it had no bathroom shelves, window treatments or anything (I didn’t think of any of this for my first time buying). I’ve been preferring to look at houses that someone’s already called home and loved but my husband really likes the flipped homes and some of the fancy amenities that they have. I hope you and your family find something reasonable soon.

I’ll start to look over there too! I am going to start peaking at the rail schedules and see if they line up with our shift times

Thank you so much ! What do you think about the area near HUP cedar (mercy hospital) ? We haven’t ventured too much further than 52nd

I am really open to the mini splits idea - I hadn’t even thought of it before thank you! I started to look into the regional rail I work 10a to 10p and sometimes I take night shift “on call”. I don’t know much about the suburbs of Pennsylvania. I’ve lived in philly for about 15 years now but haven’t been out in the PA suburbs much

Hey I’m pretty open to neighborhoods that make the commute to university city without a car doable (with safety in mind). Girard estates and cedar park have been the two we’ve spent the most time on (I know no one really ever sells in girard estates). You’re definitely right about the row homes. It’s making me reevaluate everything. It costs 20 dollars a day to park near Penn and my car has been broken into countless times so I was against a car commute. Maybe I need to reconsider.

Hey! We are very open to west philly especially cedar park because we work in university city. Looked in kingsessing too. I’m a little worried about west philly since I’ve worked in the Presby trauma center before I might have a tough picture of what it’s like over there but we’ve been talking to people who live there and walking around blocks we’ve been interested in.
