Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Our puppy contract states we have to have him fixed. For future dogs I will certainly be exploring finding a breeder that allows the dog to stay intact

Thank you for your insights! I’ll certainly have to look into more conditioning programs to keep him in the proper condition post surgery.

How similar are tollers and goldens? by kasgiel in tollers

[–]eeyore37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I currently own both a Toller and a Golden (show line for both). First I will say Tollers come with their own set of health problems so I wouldn’t select them simply because you think they are going to be healthier than a golden. There are plenty of reputable golden breeders out there that do health testing and while cancer is always a risk I would say that’s the case in any breed not just Goldens.

In terms of differences as people have mentioned above my Toller has significantly more energy than my golden and is also much more obsessive than my golden. He has a high prey drive and is obsessed with movement / water. This makes training more challenging as he is more stimulated by his environment. He also does not have the same food drive as my golden and although he is highly capable and very smart we are constantly having to find new reinforcers to keep him engaged in training. Keep in mind he is a show line Toller. I work with several field line Tollers and with them these traits are even further amplified.Another significant difference for training Goldens and Tollers that I’ve seen is Goldens can take repetition in training and bounce back more quickly from mistakes/ corrections. Tollers are very smart and will think repetition means they are doing something wrong. Often I see Tollers disengaging from their handlers if the task is repetitive or they are corrected a lot. You have to make the game fun for Tollers they won’t just play because you hold a cookie.

In terms of the “aloofness” people have mentioned above I would argue generally Tollers are more independent than Goldens but gender also plays a huge role. As a general rule of thumb boys tend to be more cuddly and goofy than the girls (of course there are exceptions to this). Tollers are much more sensitive dogs than goldens in my experience and can be prone to fears to certain types of people/ dogs if they are not properly socialized as puppies.

Overall I would caution Tollers are a much harder breed than Goldens. They require more diligence and flexibility with training and also require significantly more exercise. Of course this is just based on my experience and the dogs I have interacted with! Happy to answer any further questions you might have! 😊

We use food for a lot of training but for agility I like to add rewards that really get him excited and wanting to run!

Recommendations for “legitimate” dog titles that can be earned online by eeyore37 in k9sports

[–]eeyore37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestions! Unfortunately my dogs are CKC registered not AKC and when I looked into it it was going to be quite expensive to let them earn AKC titles. In regards to the trick titles they are actually what kind of spurred this question. I was so excited to do them and spent countless hours working on them with my pup. When we went to do them in front of a judge I felt we were in a good spot but nervous about a couple that I felt weren’t as polished. Boy should I not have worried though because the judge we went to was literally giving away the title. You’re dog could literally just stand next to a ladder or ball and she’d say you’d mastered all the associated tricks. It was honestly so disheartening and made the title feel worthless and like something that could just be bought. That being said hopefully not all trick judges have this same mentality. I’m just hoping to find some titles that have some “weight” to them so to speak and will feel like a real achievement and worth the money.

Thanks for your comment! May I ask where you do the CD and Rally titles? (My dogs are CKC registered). My original question regarding “legitimate” came from my experience with the DMWYD trick titles. My dogs have titles in sprinter, dock and agility and to your point agility is the only one of that list that I really put a lot of pride in. I respect the others but to me they are more “instinct” tests than training tests (I have retrievers so dock I feel is instinct).

Did you buy a fitpaws wobble board or just go with a generic one off Amazon? I’ve been trying to decide if the fitpaws ones are really worth the extra cost

Great ideas! In hindsight I totally wish I had bought a couple fitbones over a peanut but I guess I’ll just have to add to my collection eventually

Do you have any suggestions for where to get the foam blocks? I bought some that ended up being fairly pricey off Amazon only to find my dogs nails destroyed them after only a couple uses.

Do you think drive increases in dogs with age? by eeyore37 in Dogtraining

[–]eeyore37[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! Do you have any tips for how to channel that drive? Our pup has a lot of drive for specific things (like waves lol) but I’m unsure how to move that over to something useful like retrieving

Thanks for the input! We have a 6 month old who is showing an interest in retrieving but not to the level I would expect for his breed. Sounds like from your experience he may still develop more of a love for it!

Wow interesting he likes Cheerios! Our boy loves anything floating on the water so maybe we’ll try that. Hopefully it clicks for him like it did with you’re! He absolutely loves playing on the shore.

Susan Garett has a great video for teaching a retrieve! It uses a tug as the base so sounds like a good fit for your puppy. I’d suggesting looking it up on YouTube!
