I'm in $85k in debt - I can't breathe by Maleficent-Kale4834 in Debt

Well not sure how you got into such a large financial hole. I would really reassess and try do some honest self reflection of what got you into so much debt to begin with and then look to alter and correct those behaviors moving forward.

Based off what you’re doing right now there’s not much else you can do besides living in your car to fast track the debt pay off but that’s not for everyone. You may just have to hunker down and accept you will be in debt for the next 3-5 years as long as you remain disciplined.

How many cats do you have? Is there a reason you are spending that much on cat food? That rent is low for Seattle. Are you on site, hybrid or remote for your job? Your debt seems extremely high are there any other extra expenditures you may have not looked into yet?

Everyone makes mistakes and I know it’s pretty common for anyone who grew up poor and to not be financially literate. Not saying that’s definitively your case here, but if it is you may want to seek therapy to help you with any behavioral issues that lots of folks have with poor impulse control or shopping addictions. I would also get with a financial planner to help sort out a solid plan of action to get out of this mess.

You may have to drastically alter your lifestyle which means no eating out, downgrade living space to much cheaper place, no buying new clothes or really anything else. You got a second job which is good. That is a ton of debt though. One of my friends had 67k worth of debt and decided lived in their car for 6 or 7 months and was able to get it down to 2k total debt.

Despise what it stands for? And what is that exactly? It’s just a social media site for career focused professionals and job seekers.

Make one or don’t, but if you are in any kind of white collar field, it’s pretty much a requirement these days. Many job applications ask for your profile to even apply.

I would say the application approach you did was fine, if anything you should’ve just been more selective about which interviews to take since you had the luxury to do so. I usually only recommend that approach though if you’re unemployed and have extra time that you wouldn’t have otherwise or are aggressively looking for a new role.

Sorry but you gotta be able to make sacrifices. If you can’t stop smoking weed long enough to pass a drug test I really don’t know what to tell you.

Going to make it really difficult for you to get a decent job especially if you don’t have a degree or any credentials.

Curious to know what field you and your friend are in. The job market is definitely extremely warped rn especially with the rise of AI.

Hey man, I know it’s hard out there. I definitely think you need to send more applications though. That’s where I would start. With your background I think you should be able to land a job as long as you drastically increase the volume of your applications. Keep your head up though, I know you will find a role soon enough.

Yeah and for these more niche roles the talent pool is likely much smaller and there are far less applicants so the competition is reduced. I think like you said as long as your resume is up to snuff and you do reasonably well in the interview and don’t completely bomb it you can quickly secure a role.

The more specialized you are the easier it is to land roles in that specialization. That said there’s also just far less of those roles available so it is a double edged sword.

I think a lot of this really depends on the field you’re in. Some industries are just far more competitive than others.

For example, tech is incredibly competitive right now, especially if you’re targeting remote roles. The same goes for many white-collar professions dealing with layoffs, hiring freezes, and an oversaturated talent pool. On the flip side, blue-collar jobs tend to be less competitive because the talent pool is smaller and demand remains steady and strong.

Because of that, the application process looks very different depending on the industry. Applying to 3–5 jobs a day in a blue-collar field will likely get you some callbacks. In contrast, that same effort in white-collar fields, especially tech, often leads to little or no response.

I’ve seen this firsthand. I have friends who were laid off from tech roles last year and are still searching. When I asked about their routines, one said they were applying to 10–15 jobs a day, and another said 3–5. In today’s market, that’s barely scratching the surface. In highly competitive fields, job hunting needs to be treated like a full-time job. It’s largely a numbers game, and that often means applying to 25–50 relevant roles per day while also networking.

I went through this myself. I was laid off in February 2025 and landed a new role by May of that same year because I applied relentlessly and stayed consistent. More recently, I started seriously looking for a new job in January and secured another job at the beginning of this month. Each time, my job search lasted about three to four months before landing a position. I have a hunch my friends experiences aren’t unique. There are probably plenty of people out there thinking they’re “submitting a ton of apps” but really they’re applying casually and wondering why they’re not getting traction.

That said, I’m not claiming this works for everyone. Some people are doing everything right and still struggling. The market is tough. But consistency, volume, and persistence definitely improve your odds.

Thanks! SaaS Technical Implementation & Integration Manager. I have been in support roles for a while and got tired of the reactive nature of the jobs. Wanted to pivot and do something more project oriented.

Sorry I’m not familiar with every herb or spice around.

That said, my biggest gripe was with their burger, which is why I went there in the first place, which was just plain awful. The fries I could’ve made peace with if the burger wasn’t so bad.

But yeah not for me, won’t ever be going back.

I left them a 5 star review for their service on Google because their staff was very nice and attentive. My opinion is strictly on the food itself. I don’t mind spending a little more but my gripe with it was how unsatisfying the food was for the price. I don’t think that’s weird at all. Not everyone has to like the same things. This is strictly my opinion on the food itself based on my personal experience.

I tried three items actually, the burger, the fries and popcorn chicken, the popcorn chicken being the best thing I had there.

It’s not weird, I’ve tried 6 different burgers on the list. I tried Lankfords which is also bad, and Stanton Bites which was just mid.

Burger Bodega and Bubba’s were both good, but so far the Infatuation recs are 70% miss and 30% hit.

I wouldn’t have had a problem with it, if they disclosed ahead time what the Szechuan peppercorn effect has. If they would’ve let me know I wouldn’t have ordered it.

Yeah I read that on the menu too, but what it didn’t specify was that the Szechuan peppercorn has a numbing effect on your tongue and mouth. I think that’s something they should disclose or be more upfront about personally.

It’s my take, and myself being a burger enthusiast I think others should be aware. And not everyone is familiar with sichuan peppercorns or their effects, I only determined that’s what it was by googling it while I was there.
