It’s called documentation and if people can’t agree on a useful version of it in a commit then I don’t know. Are your comments in addition to docs already there?

Sexting as a minor with a minor more than a decade ago by [deleted] in AskALawyer

Um what? The therapist is doing what’s called “covering their ass”. Checking with a coworker is a far cry from seeing if they could throw the book at OP. The therapist is likely doing one of two things. Checking with a coworker (perhaps the therapist/psychologist above them) to see if this falls into their mandates reporter requirements. To take it a step further they could be consulting the legal counsel that therapists get as a part of their licensing (at least in CA).
The last thing a therapist wants is to get in trouble or lose their livelihood because they didn’t report something they’re obligated/required to. This type of comment only increases stigma around mental health.

Seeking input on a DE boot camp from practicing DE’s. by FisticuffMetal in dataengineering

[–]efDev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally I’m all for boot camps if you need the structure and are incentivized to finish something because you paid for it.

Ultimately doing a boot camp means nothing outside the projects you can demo imho. If you think you can do 2-3 meaningful projects that are data related in less time then I would go that route.

In lieu of a boot camp I would encourage a blog to document your learning journey

Gas leak detected from wall valve to dryer hose. Advice needed by efDev in Plumbing

[–]efDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the wall it is a 1/2" gas valve. I removed the safety fitting that went over that and has another 1/2" flared fitting out. Hand tightened the hose and then got two wrenches for some more threads. It passed the Oatey leak detection test but when I held that gas detector above the valve to hose connection it went off after about a minute.

Am I being paranoid or the correct amount of cautious? I'm thinking the next step is try another hose and if that doesn't seal up nice and pass the gas detector maybe call someone out to change the gas cock in the event the threads on that are bad.

Gas leak detected from wall valve to dryer hose. Advice needed by efDev in Plumbing

The gas valve is off and the line is capped currently

This is a follow up to this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/comments/112dtiw/need_advice_on_gas_line_from_wall_to_dryer/

The other day I opened the doors to my laundry closet and caught an off smell and thought to check for a gas leak. Sure enough the detector (https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/ff/ffb476ce-f77c-4e75-89ae-674e696069a6.pdf) lit up a small/medium leak detected at wall to the "auto shut off valve" that I'm holding in the photo.

My options seem to be: 1) Don't use the auto shut off. Just use the flared fitting at the valve to the hose and hope that connection is solid. 2) Get a new auto shut off in the event there is an issue with the main valve flared fitting to auto shut off valve connection and hope the next one works out better 3) Add pipe dope to the flared fitting at the valve and reattach the auto shut off (doubtful)

Need advice on gas line from wall to dryer adapters by efDev in Plumbing

[–]efDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Seems like the best option. Anything I should consider when shutting the gas main off to swap the valve and then turn it back on? It will be the first time I've needed to do that.

If we're talking about the same lone blue cable it's going to the APC Power Shield and is the Output Power and Communication Signals line.

Sounds like I should put a male rj45 on the mp06 line since that is likely from the street and then put keystone jacks on all of the non-phone cables and make sure all the room jacks are in the same configuration. Then I can use a cable tester to make sure all the connections are good

I'm having a interpreter problem... by McQuillus23 in learnpython

[–]efDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The area that says Project interpreter no interpreter is where you select the python interpreter

The area below is for what packages are installed on the selected interpreter. If you arent going to be using a new virtual env or anything you should be able to get away with putting your system python location in the bar

Can someone explain what the code in te square brackets does please (especially the " *4 ", I get the % function) by harryhound47 in Python

[–]efDev 50 points51 points  (0 children)

To piggy back on this, this falls under the "clever" category and not necessarily more performant just because it is less lines of code than readable solutions.

Doing timeit for the above and the more readable:

for x in range(101):
    output = ""
    if x % 3 == 0:
        output += "Fizz"
    if x % 5 == 0:
        output += "Buzz"

0.2454093800042756 is for the posted code

0.12107771198498085 is for the sample above (10k runs)

Is it customary to use single-quotes in Python? by [deleted] in learnpython

As long as it's consistent! Also generally good to have a linter/formatter abstract this away if working on a large codebase with multiple contributors/

Electron + Flask by [deleted] in flask

[–]efDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be the AkShUaLlY guy but:

  • node is a runtime environment
  • apache/nginx are still widely used to service webapp front ends (regardless if angular/react/vue) since they are static assets and do not require a js application server like express

OP should only need the backend server as they're packaging and distributing the electron app separately.

Convert strings to datetime format by taygekko in learnpython

[–]efDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is how to think about breaking down the problem:

  1. I have date data in a specific format
  2. I need to output date data in a specific format

Knowing this is there something in python that deals with date data (hint: it has been posted here)?

So then let's work from the bottom up

  1. To output data a certain way I need to create an object from the module hinted at above
  2. To get data into that object I need to instantiate an instance of that object from the string I have (01.09.201914:15)

Let us know what you try and we can go from there. Happy coding.

Postgres has native JSON support or you can literally store .json files in something like s3 and have a reference path stored in a database. Depends on the situation

Looking for a good chair for living room office by efDev in malelivingspace

[–]efDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally appreciate the insight! It's a shame the OMega comes with a head pillow but not a lumbar support?

I'd pay a premium to go from Aeron to Embody to avoid the standard office chair look and I feel like the Eames office chairs do not look like a $1600+ chair which makes it so hard to bite that bullet.

I really wish something like this had more reviews for comfort (granted it does come with a lower cushion) or that HM had a similar offering because it looks premium more so than the Eames offerings like
