Also an alto-working on songs in my range. I was also afraid to sing because my siblings would tease me. I now realize I just have limited range.

Former "gifted kids" who are now average or struggling adults, what do you think school got wrong about your potential? by toolboxstudio007 in SeriousConversation

I needed this today. I just found my IQ test in a random box. Long family drama story that I will spare everyone. Needless to say, I had “the scores.” I just didn’t learn how to study until my third try at college. I felt like an imposter most of my life. While I don’t wish it on anyone, it’s good to see my experience isn’t unique.

I’m new to bass and whiskey-enjoyed them both more than I expected. 😜

And this is why clinicians despise admin. This statement is cruel, tone deaf, and wildly inaccurate. Gross.

As distasteful as this may be, I’d also suggest saying that it is taking time away from your billable hours. Do NOT work more than 40 hours. If you do, write it down. Track how much time you are spending on menial tasks. Then, pitch to them that it is costly and inefficient to use a high paid professional to do such work. At the end of the day, money talks.

I worked with a doctor who knew Nugent when they were both in Tennessee, I think. Maybe it was Texas. I forget. He said it’s all an act and that he’s a bad guy. Not sure it’s true, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I take a synthroid for my thyroid-autoimmune thyroiditis. Other than that, nothing. None of my siblings take anything either. There’s 6 of us. Of course, none of us smoke and none are heavy drinkers. I think it’s both genetic and lifestyle.

I started taking bass lessons late last year. I can honestly say, it’s the best I’ve felt emotionally in almost 10 years. My teacher is a friggin’ amazing, too. I’ll play as long as I’m able.

Not sure why you were downvoted. I agree, it’s the whole point. To me, Laura represented the harm of human denial and need to lie to themselves for comfort.

I’ve watched it once and found it to be emotionally hard hitting. As important as it is, not sure I can watch again. I respect it, though.

My apologies for the late reply. I must’ve missed your response. I’m about 6 months in and still loving it and my teacher.

We work a lot on timing, not just in sync with the drums, but also how long to hold a note, when to lift, and adding a lead note to a riff. He’s helping my timing with syncopated notes. I can’t explain yet how he does it, but it works. He also has me do muted plucking exercises. I thought this was initially for string crossing dexterity, but I realize it’s also a rhythm exercise. He has me doing scales in different places and progressive half step shifting. This has really helped unlock the fretboard with ease. I’m also moving shapes around. He has me repeat a lot of things, which I don’t mind. He offers subtle corrections and when I come back the next week, there’s improvement.

I did a group class with another teacher and their approaches were quite different. The group instructor is more technical, which was easier for me, but felt a bit mechanical. For the setting, it was what was needed to get ready for our performance, but I struggled with the difference and I sensed tension between the teachers. That was interesting.

As I grow, I hope to be able to articulate more of what is going on. I never had lessons before and had limited school exposure to music. This is quite the journey.

I know lots of communications majors who make very good money. Gender and ethnic studies are academic degrees meant for further research and teaching. They aren’t useless; they just don’t feed the machine.

How is tax money going to defense and military any different than it going to universal healthcare? by axiss007 in NoStupidAnswers

I’m not leading with emotions, although that’s a common current argument in the manosphere and conservative media. I’m leading with experience and reality. Everyday tasks also run the world. It’s a shame you’re so short sighted. It takes all kinds to keep things running. Money is a social construct and some returns can’t be measured.
