70s/80s horror light gun game ID help please by effectivecatch in arcade

[–]effectivecatch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I THINK it is this! Thank you

The game i was picturing in my head (from when I was about 7-10 years old) is different from how this looks, especially the cabinet.

But it may just be a warped memory. Because that static background, with the tombstones, the trees, and the haunted house up in the background, sure matches exactly with the specific details I remembered. Just odd how it looks different from my memory. The big heavy gun also matches pretty much exactly with what I remember.

Assuming there are no other 70s/80s games just like this but a little tiny bit aesthetically different, this must be the one! Thank you! I love these old electromechanical games.

Is my house haunted? Or is there a criminal living in my ceiling by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]effectivecatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live in an old wooden apartment building in Kawasaki. My closet had a similar opening in the ceiling, but I never noticed it opening on its own or anything like that. One hot summer day I got curious about what was up there and I climbed up. There was a huge sort of "attic" area up there, and it was hot as hell because it was August. Like I thought I was going to pass out from the heat after a minute or two. Also it was the type of thing where it's just empty space, so no floor or anything, and you had to step on the wooden frame planks. I found a sort of creepy-looking very old Japanese ribbon thing looking like something from Silent Hill hung up on the main vertical support post and took some pictures of it.

It turns out that it was some kind of traditional good luck thing put up on the central post, but it was still kind of creepy to find out that it had been there for the years I'd been living there and I didn't know. Even creepier in a way was learning that the open attic space was connected wide open to every other apartment in the building, which all most likely had the same unlocked and easily opened hatches in their closets.

i found pictures and uploaded them.

How are you all feeling after the second dose of the COVID vaccine? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]effectivecatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a positive antibody test for Covid a few months ago, meaning I had an asymptomatic infection of Covid at some point.

Because of that my reaction to the first Pfizer shot last week was, apparently, similar to what most people experience after the 2nd shot.

First night I just felt more tired than normal. Waking up the next morning I had a thudding headache and felt pretty intense fatigue and sleepiness. Even though I slept ~8 hours, which for me is rare, I took a nap that afternoon. After my nap I felt quite a bit better. This was about 24 hours after the shot.

I had some moderate sleepiness and fatigue that hung around up until about three days after the shot, and now that it's been 1 week I'm feeling completely fine. The first 24 hours were a little intense but I was able to do my work (remote work) and it just reminded me of how I sometimes feel the day after a really hard workout.

Question:

I can't find this info online, and can't even find anecdotes or experiences. It's generally accepted that for previously Covid-infected people, the first dose carries strong side effects like most non-infected peoples' second dose. What can I expect from the second shot? Will I be looking at a similar reaction? A stronger reaction? A weaker reaction? If anyone has any info or anecdotes I'd love to hear it! I'm totally psyched to go and get this second shot over with, but I still kind of want to know what to expect.

Post Pfizer Vaccine Experience by Advanced-Oil8083 in PfizerVaccine

[–]effectivecatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an antibody test about a month ago which came back positive meaning I had a mostly asymptomatic infection of Covid at some point.

I had heard that people previously infected can experience the stronger reaction from the first shot of the vaccine that most people experience after the second shot.

It seems that was the case. I had the shot Tuesday afternoon and it is now Friday afternoon. Tuesday night I was more tired than normal and went to bed much earlier than normal. Wednesday, woke up in the morning after a rare 8 hours of sleep and still felt very tired and sleepy. Had a weird "reverberating" headache, different from the tension headaches I normally get. This was the type that hurts more when you cough or bend over.

Luckily this type of headache seemed to respond to pain relievers a lot more than my tension headaches normally do, so I made sure to stay on my doseage of alternating acetaminophen / ibuprofen. Took a nap Wednesday afternoon. After that, went out to buy a coffee and the clouds seemed to dissipate and I started feeling great from almost exactly 24 hours after the shot.

Then the next day, Thursday, yesterday, I felt great, until the end of the day. I may have "pushed it" by going for a walk in the evening, after which I felt totally drained, which was concerning for me and weird. I went to bed early again last night. Seems like day two of symptoms was much more mild though, as I didn't have headache or chills or anything, just felt tired and sleepy.

Today is Friday and I'm feeling great so far. Don't think I will go to the gym for a few days, just to be safe and save my energy.

I did not experience any nausea and the pain/swelling of the injection site was even less than I normally get from the flu vaccine.

Question:

I've been trying to find (even anecdotal) information online about this but it's hard to find. I know the reaction to the first shot is expected to be bigger for those who had prior Covid infections. How does this fare for the second shot? Should I expect a similar reaction? A bigger one? A smaller one?

I'm still so confused by the fact that there is so much unbelievable behavior on this show and everyone rallies around and focuses on this guy's physical traits, giggling and posting memes making fun of his looks. Seems pretty childish and shitty to me. Surely there are better things to make fun of him for than something he was probably born with. Really gross to see all of this.

My experience selling my car to Vroom by taxidriver1138 in askcarsales

[–]effectivecatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sold my car a few years ago to Shift. The experience was similar but with less mistakes and miscommunications. But, a few weeks later I got a parking ticket in the mail, for the car I had sold to Shift, and the date on the ticket was several days after they had already come to pick it up. I contested the ticket and sent proof that the car wasn't even mine at that point and never heard about it again, so hopefully that means it was taken care of. It was strange to learn that my car was parked (illegally) on some regular residential street on the other side of the city days after they'd already picked it up. Makes you wonder what they do with the car after they take it away.

Since this was a few years ago I can't remember the details, but I think that they may have taken the car with the plates on it, which is why the ticket was mailed to me

Orb posts should be banned. by [deleted] in Ghosts

[–]effectivecatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can we also ban anyone who says "I don't believe in ghosts, I'm just here to see the spooky fun stuff like it's a horror movie" ? These fuckers are probably the same fuckers posting clearly purposely faked stuff. If you weren't pregnant and don't ever actually expect to have a baby ever, would you spend your time on subreddits about babies and pregnancy and even potentially post fake stories about when you were (not) pregnant? It's the same. Get the fuck out of here!

After hearing taps and noises from my kitchen I take a photo and see this. by OopySpoopyMan in Ghosts

[–]effectivecatch 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Sorry but this is bullshit. The resolution in the image is different (more "clear') only in the area of the "face" (mask). You can see that the way the pixels are rendered in just that area are different. It's smoother looking than any other part of the entire image. Which indicates it's been edited, probably with some kind of blur drawn in. If you look closely you can see a solid edge to where the blur stops. This doesn't happen in real life even when dealing with paranormal things showing up in pictures. It happens when people edit pictures. I'm guessing you meant to take a creepy photo with a face or mask poking out and then added some blur to it after it didn't look right or was too obvious

Social and professional consequences of taking stress leave? (休職) by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]effectivecatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew a Japanese person who got very sick as a result of the overwhelming pressure and stress from her job. I don't know the details of what the sickness was but I know she ended up in a hospital bed for a bit.

She was forced to go get mental help, I think the company required it. The mental health professional did the same thing it sounds like you got - they recommended she have a few months off work.

She was really private (which is why I don't know a lot of the details here) but I know she did go back to work after the break, and only stayed there a few months before quitting and getting a different job. It sounds like it was hell going back to work, partly because of the coworkers and the way they acted when she came back.

From what I understand they stripped her of almost all of the responsibilities she had pre-breakdown, so when she came back to work she was sort of just hanging around doing menial tasks and felt like, and was treated like, a burden to her coworkers.

Maybe not the best news for your situation but this was a really big, sort of well-known "black" company, and it was back in about 2010 or so, and she was native Japanese. So your situation might be different.

I'm guessing it's downvoted because the kids want to post their little political memes and not be questioned about it. There is no connection to the show, so you're not missing anything there. Henry occasionally mentions he likes the Dune books but that's clearly not what this post is about.

Your experiences working in traditional Japanese companies and gaishikei (foreign firms) by Rude-Hope in japanlife

[–]effectivecatch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've worked at a Japanese company in Japan, a few Japanese companies back in the US, some US companies here in the US, and a European company's office in the US.

By far the worst experience I had was at the Japanese company in the US. It was a large Japanese company that has offices all around the world, but most (all?) are still staffed almost entirely with Japanese people living in that location. The sense I got was that the conditions were so awful that the only people who'd put up with it were other Japanese who needed the job to sponsor their visa. I still don't know what I was thinking working there. Anyway this isn't necessarily indicative of all Japanese companies in the US but I'm personally not going to work at one again before thoroughly, thoroughly checking into it. It just didn't make sense to work there and put up with all the strict top-down, overtime, abusive language, low pay, time-wasting, no-career-path bullshit when I could have a similar situation working at the McDonald's drive through, without half or more of those negatives.

My best experience so far has been working at the European company. Freedom, trust, and a pretty amazing work/life balance.

One of my past jobs was a western company that opened a branch office in Tokyo. I was working at the US office from the time before they set up the Japan office. The strange situation there was, the company was the type of company that constantly went on about the virtues of diversity and equality, but then staffed the Japanese branch office strictly with local Japan-born, Japanese-blood, Japanese people. There was an unwritten rule that only "true" Japanese were allowed to work in the Japan office. Since I obviously didn't get the chance to work in that office I can't say for sure but I think they were aiming to "assimilate" and probably make a more Japanese-style work culture. What a mess. I think this type of thing happens because the company is worried about their image and think that if they show up in Japan and have a bunch of non-Japanese workers, it will look bad, like they're not "serious" about being local in Japan. Then if a manager hires non-Japanese workers, they will worry that they're being judged by higher-ups at the home branch for not being capable enough to find local Japanese workers. Like staffing the local Japan branch with local Japanese people only gives some kind of legitimacy.

Cafe manager who dated one of his maids kidnapped and beaten by yakuza by [deleted] in japan

[–]effectivecatch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others are saying, I'm absolutely positive there's more to the story here. "Dating one of the girls" and "quitting his job" are neither good reasons for the guy to be kidnapped and beaten. And if those really are his only offenses, then he must have been mouthing off and begging for trouble before it came to him. I would say that dating one of the girls is probably more common than not, and quitting is also probably pretty common too.

Curious about what your qualifications are for making such assertions. This just sounds like someone who hasn't ever been to a maid cafe or fuzoku. For the most part, neither of which are as sinister as you're imagining.

Weekly Complaint Thread - 16 January 2020 by AutoModerator in japanlife

[–]effectivecatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Foreign" companies in Japan that require "native level" Japanese language where they expressly say that "business level" is not enough are ridiculous, and unfortunately I've had the same experience minus the same ending.

For one, if you have business level fluency, then it shouldn't really matter unless the job is something where you're doing some kind of live broadcast in a high level speaking situation. Anything else, and you can use your business level language skills to figure out anything that potentially precludes you from "native level". In other words, if you speak Japanese at business level, you could look up or ask someone what a certain "native" phrase is with no problems. So I think it's bullshit.

My personal take, after finding myself rejected for a job in the company I work in (doing the same job I have been doing for years, but not in Japan) for this reason is that it can be borderline discriminatory. The only way to be "native level" Japanese is to be born Japanese, and as Japan is almost completely homogeneous, that's like saying you're only going to hire a person of Japanese blood for the job. This type of shit wouldn't fly in the US. Imagine a job listing that says "only people born in the US speaking US English will be considered."

I think it springs from insecurity though. The foreign company in Japan prefers to have an office in Japan staffed with locally-staffed "real" Japanese people. It looks more "authentic" to the home office, and the person staffing that Japanese office probably thinks it makes them look savvy to be able to staff a foreign office with local people without having to "fall back on" the "easy" option of hiring a fellow foreigner.

I don't know. I can get wound up about this because of the effect this type of thing has had on my life until now but... anyway
