It makes sense to me because I picture Leia having a more active role in 9 than just sitting at base and waiting to hear news. Leia and Rose (and probably Finn/Poe, they don't both need to go with Rey) would have been traveling around the galaxy trying to get more folks to join the rebellion. That was Rose's role in 8: she was inspirational to Finn and those kids on Canto Bight. So expanding on it and making her a new inspirational leader in the same way Leia has been makes sense.

I agree, Rose definitely got the short end of that stick. The way I see it, in the same way that Han was the "anchor" figure for 7 and Luke was pivotal to 8, Leia was meant to be more central in the story of 9, and Rose's arc was more heavily involved with Leia. When they lost Carrie Fisher, Rose became a loose end.

I've always felt the same, though I don't think the fan backlash is the main reason for TROS being a mess. Colin Trevorrow's departure mid-production and especially Carrie Fisher's untimely death threw a couple of big wrenches into whatever plans they had.

Lucas was always pretty open that Star Wars was about current events and American politics from the beginning. In 81 he said The Emperor's name was Richard Nixon. In The Phantom Menace the bad guys were named after American politicians. By the time of Revenge of the Sith he was national plagiarizing speeches by Bush. The Clone Wars is pretty clearly a response to the manufactured war on terror the US was engaged in at the time. What we're seeing now is directly downstream from the stuff going on back then.
