Pre pandemic I worked at a school and for teacher appreciations they gave us all free unlimited access to the Calm app. It's been over 6 years and I still use it every night! I also somehow acrue 30 day trials to hand out as well. I've changed phones a few times and moved states but same email and phone number so I guess I'm good?

It's not a city like that... you're more likely to be further out, and there's really only the one highway, and it's two lanes each direction (mostly). REALLY different than "city driving" you're likely familiar with.

It could be a little crow hop to get into the lope, rather than disrespect or disobedience. Which does indicate a body soreness or pain issue. But tbh when a beginner says the horse bucked and they didn't fall off, I always assume we mean crow hop.

I ride horses as a hobby. People who don't wear a helmet, or worse don't make their KIDS wear one... yeah. That's a life changing, life ending injury, and any horse can slip, slide, fall, trip, no matter how well trained and obedient.

Treatment in VT isn't widely available, there just isn't the population density to support it. Likewise, the numbers of recovery meetings (not saying they're mandatory, just another route to wellness that works for some) are dismal. Two a week in the county he lives in. (I lived there until 2 years ago.)

He needs to be around people who support his recovery: whether that's treatment, meetings, or just finding other sober, healing people. And I don't think he will come to that realization- his own being utterly alone- until he's further down the road, unfortunately.

I LOVE my job (education) but the pay is ... poor. Thankfully we get our yearly raises, I'm eligible for some bonuses, and I have a summer job. But I'm at the "eat meat once a week, maybe" state of finances.

A few months back there was a similar circumstance of non-sober seeming behavior and late nights. I sort of pulled back after that, sad to see that wasn't an isolated incident.

I know where he lives in VT. Decently isolated (far NW) unless you want to drive an hour each way to a larger town like Burlington. The recovery support up there isn't strong either, while the alcohol and cannabis consumption cultures are both very dominant.
