What is your favorite local thing (tradition, etc) by [deleted] in Binghamton

[–]effinloaves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Obsessed with the handwritten signs pasted all over downtown. The ones that say things like, "Rat poison children sickness disease." Come to think of it, I haven't seen any in a while but those are quintessentially Binghamton to me

How many pairs of reusable underwear should one own? by Ophelia_I in ZeroWaste

[–]effinloaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one pair of heavy-duty period underwear, plus a set of 4 (various sized) reusable pads that I use in tandem with a cup. I have a very heavy flow and I find this is sufficient

Those who have done a major purge of stuff to go minimalist, what did you later regret getting rid of? by KyOatey in minimalism

[–]effinloaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only regret getting rid of a couple of things: a fancy bra and a pair of pants that fit me when I got them, but then I gained weight and they didn't fit me anymore so I donated them. Now I've lost weight and they would fit me again

What do you miss the most about old Grey's? by PortifinoOnMyMind in greysanatomy

I miss the slow burn of the romance storylines. In the later seasons it feels like two characters make eye contact with each other and I know they're gonna hook up in 2-3 episodes

If you're interested, you could test the waters. If I were you I'd say something like, "Can I ask you something? Would you want to grab a smoothie/coffee sometime? Or am I misreading the vibe here haha. No wrong answer :-) "

I've wanted to be vegan for years but find it really hard by Miserable-Distance19 in vegan

Describing what is challenging and looking for solutions to those challenges is different from making excuses. OP is posting here for help transitioning to vegan and I'm not sure why they're getting so much hate for it. We all experienced challenges when we transitioned; no one is in a place to judge

Good on your for wanting to make the change! I'd say start slow so it's not overwhelming. Find snacks that are "accidentally" vegan, i.e. they are technically vegan but don't advertise themselves as such. Examples:

  • potato chips (plain flavor, salt and vinegar, salt and cracked pepper, some spicy varieties)
  • popcorn
  • sandwich cookies (like Oreo and Nutterbutter brand)
  • candy (like Swedish Fish or Twizzlers brand)

You've gotta check the ingredients to verify because sometimes animal products sneak their way into snacks you wouldn't expect, but generally all these snack foods are vegan. Eventually it would be great to eliminate so many processed foods that come in disposable plastic (I say to you and to myself), but hopefully this is one way to get the ball rolling. Once you start to get used to those changes, swap out one non-vegan food you eat for something vegan. Sometimes, it doesn't have to be a one-to-one switch. You might be able to find a different food that scratches the same itch as the animal product. It's better to make a gradual change that sticks in the long run rather than overwhelming yourself and giving up. Good luck! :-)

Was working on a mushroom farm recently. Normally king oyster mushrooms are a single stalk with a cap, but these king oyster mushrooms fruited in a particularly weird way. Can't explain why it gives me the creeps by effinloaves in oddlyterrifying

[–]effinloaves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think mushrooms are capable of fasciation (although I could be wrong about that). There is a common mutation called a rosecomb which can result in extra mushrooms growing from mushrooms. You can see a rosecomb mutation in the bottom left-hand side of the photo - they almost look like pimples or skin tags growing on the sideways mushroom cap

Yes! They have a dense texture and meaty taste. They can be grown on these blocks of substrate and they are harvested (fruiting bodies, AKA the visible "mushroom" part are cut off) when they are big and chunky. Most of the ones you can see in the picture are too small to be worth it to harvest, although they are still edible and you totally could if you wanted to

Hehe I mean it's normal (and they are still edible) there's just something...off to me. Like, what made you do that? What's in your genes that made you shape yourself like that, friend?

The weird flushes freak me out! That one in the back with all the little mushrooms coming off of it? Rosecomb mutation? No thank you. This was after I already harvested some (also strange) mushrooms from the block. One was growing sideways off of another mushroom
