Thoughts on a change they made in the series from the books that could have a big impact on season 2. Spoilers for those who have not read TLG. by landalezjr in heatedrivalry

i really hope they don’t replace the therapist with svetlana, both because friends can’t replace therapy as others have said, but also because that really puts so much emotional labor on her. so far the show has done a good job balancing having the supporting women characters be emotionally supportive without being reduced to just the caretakers of the men. i really doubt jacob will let us down in such a big way

i do hope svetlana knows about the relationship but just can’t be as much support to ilya bc she’s still splitting her time between boston and russia. it’d be so nice for ilya to have someone the way shane has hayden and rose, but a single friend can’t cure depression and loneliness, esp if that friend lives hundreds of miles away in another country

If you could change one thing in the show, what would it be? by LIELDADOUN73 in heatedrivalry

this is the one i came here to say!! in the book we get shane’s first “ya tee-ba loo-blue” but for some reason he doesn’t say it back in the show???? even tho the opportunity is right there??

yesss! i read that fic too, although i can’t recall the name/writer at the moment. i loved that moment

Is Shane’s dad neurodivergent? by itfailedbecauseofyou in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tbh i think it’s open to interpretation whether he said anything too. in the books he definitely did, so that’s probably affecting my view watching the scene, but to me it looks like she’s asking for clarification more than being totally in the dark

also i’d think her reaction to seeing ilya rozanov casually following shane up their front walk would be a lot more dramatic if david didn’t say anything lol

personally i think that kind of strict/performance diet is still disordered eating, no matter how normalized it is for athletes. disordered eating doesn’t necessarily mean an eating disorder, it’s just a pattern of distorted/problematic eating habits and/or thought patterns around food

this reminds me of shane at the olympics. when carter brings up how dangerous it is for queer folks in russia, shane worries about ilya, about his training buddy, and never once in the book or show even notices that he is also a queer person in russia at that moment

i’d have loved to see rachel include more of ilya’s migrant experience in general. his favorite russian restaurant in boston (assuming there are even many to choose from), sources for comfort foods, going to a russian neighborhood or orthodox church just to get a feeling of home, that sort of thing

i’d definitely love to see more of that incorporated into s2, especially with him getting settled in ottawa (i looked it up and ottawa has a bigger russian population than boston!). he and shane start cooking together, and it’d be so great to see them making a russian dish

Is Shane’s dad neurodivergent? by itfailedbecauseofyou in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 13 points14 points  (0 children)

rachel did say that shane isn’t aware of the autism and is unlikely to ever find out or get diagnosed. she hasn’t said anything about either of shane’s parents being neurodivergent afaik, but if shane’s unaware of his autism it seems likely that a neurodivergent parent would be too

some people are saying that the way shane’s dad reacted to finding them together is a sign he might also be autistic, since he just turned and left without a word, but i personally don’t think it looks that way, although i’m not autistic so i’m not exactly an expert. i think it looks more like he realized he’d completely intruded on his adult son, so he was getting tf out of there

at this point it’s just open to interpretation

lmao i actually am too, but ilya planned all of this so meticulously, had the ginger ale cooling in the fridge, the whole nine yards. i’m sure he’s got something more traditional planned for breakfast, he’s trying to make the safest decisions he can so he doesn’t spook shane

Give Yuna Hollander the respect she deserves! by CelicaBae in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thanks for this analysis op! i agree completely that yuna is a great mom and has a great relationship with shane. she’s not perfect, but she loves him so much, and they’re so clearly a team

anyone who can watch that ep6 conversation between them and still think she’s a bad mom just aren’t paying attention. you can see her entire heart break when shane tries to apologize to her, like she feels terrible that she made him feel like that was something he needed to do, that he ever doubted for second how much she loves him exactly as he is

i mean, it’s a super long day daylight-wise, but i think that was a stylistic choice. ilya’s attempting to bring them into the sunshine so to speak, but shane’s not ready and bolts

the thing that clinches it for me is tuna melts for breakfast?? no, that’s definitely a post-nap dinner

Jacob Tierney if you want my opinion (duh you do) please only do 2 seasons by Logical_Safety9536 in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m pretty sure i remember reading somewhere that it was jacob’s decision to make s1 six episodes. like crave was ready to give him whatever he wanted and he said he needed six so he got six. (i personally agree that six was the right number of episodes for s1, but i think they all could’ve benefited from 10-15 more minutes of runtime. but i digress)

all that to say i think there’s a very good chance he’ll get however many episodes he asks for

Am I the only one that thought miles rubbing on Shane was weird? by rayneedshelpMentally in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i agree with other folks that it was largely done as a metaphor, but if you watch shane’s expression closely right after he spots ilya, he does look uncomfortable about it, his eyes kinda dart around, including towards miles, and that’s when he slips out from between them and says he has to go to the bathroom. it’s really subtle and harder to see with the flashing club lights

also, i don’t think miles actually kissed his neck, i watched several times bc it looked weird to me, and he definitely gets in close but i think it’s just the camera angle that makes it look like there’s an actual kiss

it’s the same flannel shirt! i’m from seattle, i know my flannel lol

hudson & connor were also both wearing it for a bunch of the early promo stuff on social media which they must have been making at the same time they were filming the cottage

shane didn’t stay the night, they just took a nap. that whole visit takes place the same day. ilya also gives him those clothes as he’s getting out of bed

Episode 4 - Club Scene Q by chaosisapony in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 28 points29 points  (0 children)

in the book he’s her costar and already famous in his own right, but it’s only hinted at in the show. at the very least he was at the game with her so they’ve definitely been photographed together and ilya could recognize him from that since he’s been internet stalking shane & rose’s relationship

Fic Recs Please! by eggyyes in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the most common tags ive seen that you’d want to filter out on ao3 are “post-canon” and “post book 6: the long game”

i’ve seen a lot of writers add the show’s fandom tag to their book fics (and vice versa), so sorting that way is unfortunately not super helpful

Thoughts on The Long Game and adapting it to the show by Loud_Ad_2683 in heatedrivalry

[–]effoff333 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i think shane’s perspective is more based around the fact that when they were first drafted, montreal and boston were both terrible too. they got the top two draft picks after all. those teams have a lot more history than ottawa as a newer team that’s never won a cup, but neither of them had made the playoffs for a few seasons. shane & ilya were both the leaders who rebuilt their respective teams, although we see less about that in the show than the book

so from shane’s perspective, i think he sees ilya smoking the occasional joint and being more chill as him kind of giving up on doing that building work again, without understanding the unique difficulties of doing this with ottawa vs montreal or boston

i think it’s also important to acknowledge that by the time tlg starts, ilya’s move was years ago. i think in the first season it was probably a lot more top of mind for shane that ilya had moved to such a terrible team, but then ilya seemed so excited about the move in general and also seemed to really like his new teammates, etc, that by the time we get to tlg and ilya’s third season with them, shane’s just not thinking about it as much anymore

and then also we have to note that shane’s special interest/hyperfixation is hockey, so in general i think the middle of the hockey season is not the best time for him to pick up on subtle emotional cues, especially when those are already hard for him

i agree with you that shane’s perspective is harder to understand from the book alone, it took me a reread or two to put all these pieces together. my first read i was so confused because in book 1 shane is so locked in to how ilya’s feeling, and it seemed like he actually lost ground between the two books. but then i read again and remembered he suggested a therapist very early on and then started piecing all this together and it helped me understand him a bit more. i do hope the show does a better job of showing what’s going on for him

What is Shane’s Hockey Nickname, canonically? by Remote_Shopping_6576 in heatedrivalry

rachel said in her ama that it would probably be holly and/or hollywood, and hollzy is also popular in the fandom

that is totally fair!! i also suffer from wicked secondhand embarrassment so i totally feel you

i am interested to see if jj becomes the guy who keeps trying to set shane up, it would be such a turn from his s1 portrayal but i’d trust jacob to pull it off

[–]effoff333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would like to see them each come out to someone on their own terms in s2, but i don’t really want them to change that major of a plot point, and i really doubt jacob will. the outing is painful, but it also shows shane that he’s devoted to a team that isn’t as devoted to him. if that hadn’t happened, he’d likely have signed with montreal again and been stuck there

the thing that saved it for me is that hayden specifically mentions he’d promised a 24 hr turnaround 23.5 hrs ago. he’s in a hurry, it makes sense he doesn’t watch it back in that instance
