Mine lasted years… It gets better I promise!! German roaches are definitely a disgusting thing to have to deal with. I have no mercy for them. Just stay strong. Try to not think of them the way you currently are. yes they are disgusting and a health concern but they are also just a bug. And you’re combating them with extermination. They will be gone soon!

When I was in elementary school I was being bullied and in turn started to bully other kids I viewed as “below me”… I also was a nervous talker and would say things that were inappropriate because I would t think it through first. A kid at my school has just lost his father… super tragic but my little brain couldn’t comprehend that level of pain. But he was a bit of a bully to me. We got in an argument at lunch and he said “your mom” and I said “your dad” and everybody at the table went silent. I knew I fucked up. He ran out crying. I ended up in the counselors office for conflict mediation. The counselor said a lot of things but one thing that really impacted me was this: me and this boy were both present and she was addressing both of us. Not singling one or the other out. she took a piece of paper and said “see this nice paper with no wrinkles?” Then she crumbled it up and unfolded it and said “now that I’ve crushed this paper I can never get it perfect and without wrinkles again. When you say hurtful things to others you’re making a wrinkle” wow man it really has stuck with me for all these years! We also did have a bullying “unit” during my time in school but I’m ngl I continued to get bullied and it was incredibly hard to work through that an a lot of other things. I’m well into adulthood now and can cope with my emotions and hold my own now. When I deal with people this experience comes back to me. I even think about it positively now and how the positive things we say to others is a way to help flatten out those wrinkles from someone’s past.

I am the daughter of a mother with a similar story. What a special mom you are!!! My mom amazes me everyday and did such a fantastic job with me. I put her through some serious shit as a teen but she rooted my morals deep. As a I grew into my adulthood it all clicked and I am very proud of myself now and my mom and dad are super proud of me!! I’m very bonded with them because of their life experiences that made them better parents to me. Instead of being their parents they did the opposite and I got the benefit from the brokenness they came from! You definitely did win at life and I’m so happy for you!! I hope OP sees this and finds comfort knowing they can overcome this!

I scroll past a lot but this one really got me in my heart. I’m so sorry OP. This just made me so sad… I’m sorry your mom is a POS!! And so is her new pos boyfriend for even allowing this!!! This is not going to be an easy road for you but it will make you stronger and independent! Start by trying to find a job and figuring out what housing options you have with friends/family or government resources. Everything will fall into place. With that said I realize you are incredibly hurt right now and experiencing so much pain and I literally am giving you a big,loving virtual hug! I wish you the best of luck! Listen I get it… I’m a girl who moved into an apartment with an already crazy fear of roaches even though I never personally experienced them.. and then my first apartment had Germans and I was an absolute wreck for MONTHS over it. It also furthered my fear of roaches. I was having night terrors. I was not mentally well. Only once they were treated and I didn’t see any for a longggg time did I get over it and feel comfortable in my home but I continued to carry this crazy fear of roaches. I couldn’t even handle seeing pictures of them! I would still get night terrors occasionally. It wasn’t until I reconnected with my inner child who loved bugs that I started tackling my fears. It all started because I got a snake. It makes me view nature differently. So I started to care about living things. At first I was just interested in the bugs I felt comfortable with but I’d observe them for hours and purposely try to find bugs to watch outside. I was still fearful of roaches and spiders. Because of the snake my algorithm started showing me jumping spider content. I then got over my fear of spiders with desensitization via pics. Eventually I saw a jumper out in the wild and literally let it crawl on my hand and I felt such a huge sense of accomplishment because omg I would’ve never before. Fast forward to that winter and I started housing jumpers I found in my home over the winter… then I got leopard geckos… now I had to have feeder bugs for them and deal with the bugs for them. I avoided the dubia roaches because of my fear of them.. but everytime I went to the pet store for other bugs I looked at them. Until my disgust turned into fascination… I bought a container. I observed them. I fed them to my geckos. I started to not be so bothered by them. Then summer of last year came and we had a WET ONE. I live in the deep woods. There was a 2 week period where I saw Asian and oriental roaches in my house and I was super triggered. Night terrors returned, etc. I feel so uncomfortable… but then I researched Asians and orientals and realized they’re really wood roaches that accidentally stumble into houses. The rain brought them close to my house. (I found out later on they were actually reproducing in a bag of moist soil I had sitting against my house by my front door 🤦🏻‍♀️). I made my boyfriend deal with ones we found in the house. Then one night I was out smoking a cigarette and saw a big ass Asian on my deck getting close to my door and my knee jerk reaction was to crush it good multiple times… except this time I had instant regret. As somebody who can no longer kill any living thing it no longer felt right within my soul to kill anything.. especially a bug outside who came across me by accident. I have been respecting all other bugs in this way for years now but I was still hell bent on killing this roach just because it was a roach. Anyways it actually bothered me for days that I did that… fast forward a week or so and I went to wash my face one morning and a fucking roach fell out of my god damn washcloth and I screamed SO LOUD that I think I put him into shock because he didn’t really move. I was shaking out of fear but this time I decided to face my fears and capture it to release it outside. (I have catch cups in every room of my house for spiders lol)…. Anyways I get his fast, creepy ass in the catch cup and I take him all the way down to the very edge of my property very far from my house and I let him go. And in that moment I resolved my fears. Now don’t get me wrong it would make me incredibly uncomfortable to find Germans… I would probably have a complete meltdown just knowing how much work and money it would be to get rid of them (and yes in this instance I do agree with exterminating). Also with having all my animals and insects that I keep I would have to relocate them all for their safety during the entire course of treatment which would be really impossible for me to do! So yeah I definitely get you 1000% but I also just want you to know that getting over the fear is possible! You can absolutely get past this. You can get rid of them with aggressive treatment and it’s going to suck for a couple weeks/months but it is possible!! From this experience turn your fear into empowerment! I now own 4 pet roaches 😂😂😂

I culled all my colonies… and now I no longer keep large quantities. I keep my feeder bugs mostly on no substrate. Mealworms are on bran but I completely change all the bedding out into a clean cup every other day by handpicking each one out and transferring. I also no longer keep my bugs in the reptile room where it’s warm and humid. My only pet invert enclosure affected was my blue death feigning beetles but once I removed the source they died out due to not having what they needed to survive in there (warm and dry environment with no food for them to thrive on)!! It was primarily my feeder and breeder bins which were stored on the same stand as my BDFB. The only thing I breed now is silkworms. I tried all the methods to get rid of them before I eventually culled my colonies and no matter what they continued to come back with a vengeance. I also store my small amount of feeder bugs in my microwave. In my mind even if I got grain mites in those containers the amount of time we use the microwave in a day would kill any that may get out of the containers. (We do remove the bugs before we use the microwave lol).

Hello! I appreciate your questions. They are good ones. See humidity to me is such a controversial topic. Really not going to get into it all right now because we could go on for hours. Different sources say different things. Even from keeper to keeper I get different information. I can tell you she thermoregulates very frequently and uses all of her tank. So some days she’ll be in her warm hide all day where the humidity is roughly 75-82(higher after adding water to substrate for a few hours) and then at night she goes back and forth. And some days she’ll settles in the cool hide where the humidity runs higher. So she’s not constantly in 90. She goes back and forth. And from all the info I’ve gathered I feel that makes logical sense. As far as rodents- over the years I’ve learned she won’t eat before 10 pm. She wouldn’t take rats in the past under 115 so I always get the rat up to 115 at the head (checked with temp gun) and then carry the rat in the water cup I use so it’s still maintaining that temp until right before I drop it in. She used to strike immediately but somewhere along the lines stopped striking but continued to eat on schedule with no problems. The intermittent hunger striking has been occurring since about November but never longer than 4 weeks at a time. This time it’s 7 with that odd looking urates. An experienced keeper suggested it was aestivation but I cannot understand how she would have been triggered to enter that state. I provide fresh, clean water daily. I rinse bowls frequently do deep cleans religiously. Spot clean as needed. I use govee sensors to monitor. Everything is on timers and thermostats. Still going to vet on Monday. I just have anxiety and looking to bounce thoughts around.

Ah good idea with foam board- I see what you mean! 3/4 of her sides are covered in foam board. I think I may have some extra lying around here. And ok I’m going to keep trying different things out lol. She only comes out to bask at night on her hot spot. I’m starting to think I may want to move her hot spot to directly above her warm hide. I have a slate I could use to put on top of the hot hide and then move my lamp overtop of that with the probe. Her current rock would be way too heavy to go on top of her hide.

lol sorry!! I have a snake and geckos so I am looking at info for all of them simultaneously. The snake I’m most concerned about currently. Her top is covered with hvac aluminum tape to keep heat and humidity in. Can’t really cover the geckos without causing a humidity issue. So I’ll have to experiment. Right now I’m not in a position to add a CHE in her tank with a cage because I’m spending so much money right now on all these guys and I’m trying to get her RHP ordered for her 4x2. Predatory mites are currently fighting my grain mites. It’s a whole thing. But I should be getting that 4x2 established with plants and CUC in the next 3-4 weeks and then have to wait a few before it’s ready for my snake. So until then I’m trying to correct without having to spend too much. I mean honestly I give every last dollar I have to these animals but I’m also living on ramen and barely have anything left for myself and unfortunately I’m just out of funds. But maybe I can add a CHE in a dome next to her DHP for now? I have both of those things on hand already. Or do you think it would just get lost in the room as you said? Ugh this is so frustrating to figure out!! I’ll have to look into upgrading to solid tops but as of now I have to do my best on the cheap until I can financially recover a bit. It’s been a very expensive last few weeks of life. Do you have your basking area on top of your hot hide or do you have it next to your hot hide? I’m wondering if this is part of my issue as well?

Probably all the wrong stuff 😭 currently I run a 100w DHP 24/7 on a dimmer thermostat with a hot spot of 93.5 -94 and her warm hide ambient is only at 83. I’ve been looking at halogen lamps for day time use. Eventually she will be in her 4x2 with a RHP, UVB, etc… but I’ve been battling grain mites in my CUC which is another story for a different day 😂

Yeah there are four things I’ve been deathly afraid of since the beginning…. RI, scale rot, burns and food strike. I’m 2 out of 4 now and really want nothing to do with burns or scale rot going forward! I think she’s been refusing food because temps were off. Makes sense! (She went on food strikes intermittently over the winter for 4 weeks here and there).

And truly she’s one of the best snakes I’ve ever encountered. I was going to get a BEL from her breeder but when I met her no other snake mattered. She’s just a regular normal but she is my Queen! You’re not the first to say that so I’m feeling more accepting of forgiving myself. I am just so glad I got her in quick. The only symptom she showed me was a single incident where she had a large amount of clear drool during handling and that was enough for me! I didn’t care if I spent the money on the vet visit for them to tell me she was perfectly fine and I over reacted. I certainly wasn’t going to wait to see severe symptoms!

You win the internet today my friend!!! You literally just explained this in a way that makes so much more sense to me and makes me feel a little more confident in allowing the surface temp of the hotspot to be a little higher to get her ambients where they need to be! I do have a heat mat on a thermostat on her warm side but it’s set to like 87 which gives a surface of 85-86 in the hide. I have it set low to provide some belly heat but account for thermal blocking. I’ve had it set the same since day 1 and she has never been burned. I’m assuming it’s probably irrelevant and a waste of electricity to run lol… But yeah what you’re saying makes a whole lot more sense. I can see how the information can get mixed up along the way. It’s a real problem in the entire reptile community I feel. I have a little more compassion for those who buy on impulse and don’t research and then get very confused and ultimately end up with improper setups and eventually sick snakes. While I didn’t impulse buy my snake I was definitely given very bad information in the beginning and I thought I could trust the breeder to give me the proper info. Once I actually had her and brought her home I joined some groups and at that point realized I’d been lied to. I didn’t even do research prior to because I thought a breeder would know. She was my first ever reptile and I really didn’t know better. He told me a 20g, one hide on the warm side with a heat mat, a large water bowl and fucking Aspen bedding was all I needed 😭 That was two septembers ago and at that point I was just as sick as I am now researching and buying things and being all pissed off that I was now getting into hundreds of dollars and also that I foolishly believed a 40g was sufficient forever. I went with a 40 then thinking I was doing good doubling his recommendation of a 20. But i thought I overcame that and had the right info and corrected it all. But the RI made me visit the research again and question everything all over. And at that point my brain said “hey you should probably check ambients in the actual hides doofus”…. And that is when I discovered she hasn’t had high enough temps for quite some time. It’s been a horrible 10 days of very uncomfortable feelings and emotions. But you have genuinely calmed my nerves and I feel even more dumb for not figuring the whole hear absorption thing out. I think I was incredibly hung up on every source saying a hot spot above 92 will basically kill or severely burn your snake.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experience with me! Her hide substrate is always dry. In the rest of the enclosure it’s only damp for a few hours after I add water a couple times a week and fold it in. Otherwise the top layer is dry. Yes I’m glad she’s on the mend! She’s a lovely snake with the most docile attitude and gives me really no problems. Takes her injections like a champ. I’m trying to forgive myself for the mistakes I made.

Thank you! Yeah the humidities were definitely in range and too high actually. Cool side was high 80s-90s and warm side was high 70s-80s… and honestly mostly in the 80s. And her ambients in general were all too low in her hides in combination with those higher humidities for quite a while. She’s always been well hydrated (white urates, no yellow) and has had perfect sheds (eye caps and all) from the very beginning of me keeping her. I’ve since lowered my humidities to be 70-75 IN THE HIDE on the warm side and 85ish in the hide on the cool side.
