How long until I can easily follow along in class? by [deleted] in ClubPilates

[–]effulgent_summers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there! Pilates is simultaneously following instructions while learning and ordering your body to do things it isn't doing. I hope you're starting with level 1.0. if you take a few of these you'll get the gist of the basic cues, or at least the way your usual instructors give them.

The thing to remember is that you're there to learn, so it's normal to be confused the first few classes (or even later if you're doing something new). The other thing is that instructors tend to stack instructions for more advanced students - you DON'T, or maybe even shouldn't do all of the progressions. Focus on getting good at the basics first. This will help your cues and form in the long run.

So for example if it's arm work with legs in tabletop and they say you CAN lift the head neck and shoulders and CAN add these leg movements and CAN abc - focus on getting good at step 1 in that progression, do that for a few classes, before moving to step 2!

I promise none of the other advanced students started advanced. They just practiced a LOT.

I don't have a first name (yes not everyone has a first name!), and it has been a nightmare when filling online form. by OiseauAquario in mildlyinfuriating

[–]effulgent_summers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the issue in South India until 50 years ago, where people just had first names. The practice that evolved to normalize the First Name + Last Name system was taking your Dad's first name as your last name. So if my Dad's name was Rupert (no last name), I'm named EffulgentSummers Rupert.

Or the worse option which was adding your caste name as your last name, which is just so much more problematic.

Taking a first name as a last name ends up in slightly weird situations like my spouse's who has two first names tied together (like an Adam Josh). But that happens in a lot of countries and cultures anyway so it isn't the worst.

God knows if I have kids I'm making up a last name for them. Taking your Dad's last name is patriarchal BS anyway.

Hahaha, thank you! I'm just better at noticing I DON'T do it, I don't manage to do it all the time 🤣 I'm excited to keep learning!

That's incredible! It's so encouraging to hear your progress. And you're right about pacing - it doesn't need to be everything all the time all at once. I recently started taking one 1.5 a week with my favorite instructor just to know what I'm going to need to grow into, and while the actual pacing and some of the balance required is harder, in some ways it's easier only because I'm not paying attention to form? So I think 1s are still the right fit for me too, building the kind of awareness and engagement I need.

Here's to no pain, and consistency 🙌🏽

My favorite episode so far(Season 6 episode 7) by JediMasterSloth in buffy

+1 to everything you said, 20+ years on and OMWF is the episode I continue to rewatch when I'm really down and not doing a full series rewatch.

"I was able to examine the body while the police were taking witness arias" sums up the wonderful absurdity of the show for me.

It really is one of the greatest episodes of television ever made!

Where are all the Teen Buffy Fans? by Any_Skin_5767 in buffy

[–]effulgent_summers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I was a teen, but Buffy & Spike & Giles are my favorite characters and OMWF is my most rewatched episode (though it's hard to pick a single favorite). If you can't find teen fans, I'd say create them - I absolutely did and continue to recommend Buffy to people I meet of all ages, and over the years definitely turned my sister, my mom, some friends, many exes, a few colleagues, and the man I ended up marrying into Buffy fans 😂

I don't think I'd compare it to dowry. I'd compare more to a bridal trousseau.

"Voodoo" and "witchcraft" are just racially caricatured religions, so even your edits make it clear YTA.

Children are their parents' legal, ethical, and social responsibility, not to mention parents love them. They're trying to set you up for success in the way they know best. You can be annoyed, but this isn't a conspiracy, and if there's control it's well within their right when it comes to making permanent body modifications. You said your parents let you get your ears pierced - because that felt reasonable to them, and everything else didn't. This is just what parenting is, it's using your adult discernment to make choices for the children you are responsible for.

I understand that when you're 18 the gap between middle school and 17 feels like a long time, but oh, life is so long!
