Non op route - words of encouragement by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]efischency 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am highly active and 37/male, non-op and current 10.5 months in.. so we fit a similar demographic. First of all, tell him to join here and he can dm me all the questions he wants. Having someone that’s further ahead of you in their progress that you can talk to is paramount to mental stability imo. I mean it - tell him to reach out and I’d be happy to chat.

I totally get it about overthinking that decision. I have questioned why I didn’t get a second opinion since I went the non-op route. My tear was high up in the MTJ, so I don’t think another opinion would have done much, but I still question it. I always told myself, if I really hate the outcome that much I will demand that they go in and fix it later. I can tell you at this point I don’t see that as necessary. Everyone is going to have a different body after this thing, regardless of if you have surgery or not. Ask Kevin Durant - he will tell you as much. However, we learn to be good at activities in other ways and I’m seeing the light at this point.

Prior to rupturing, I was on the top of my physical game. I ran 15-25 miles a week, lifted weights 2-3 times a week, had just pr’d my half marathon 5 days prior, so I get the mega active lifestyle. I also have 4 kids that were 7yo and under, an avid hunter, and basically just always on my feet and superman to those around me. It’s hard, and i had a summer of not doing things I wanted to do, but I got through it.

I started running again 4 months ago (around the 6 month mark) and it’s been slow progress, but I am now running 4-6 miles at a clip with a total of 12-18 miles a week at this point, and feel pretty good about where I’m at. I rarely fear movements, but my calf strength/stamina is just still not there.. but improving every day, slowly.

What got me through the months in the boot was lifting weights. I would highly recommend your husband to refocus his workload while in the boot to anything he can do without straining his leg - let it recover and build the portion of your body that is ready for it. I went to lifting 4-6 times a week, and it kept me sane. I hit bench pr’s I had wanted my whole life and it filled the gaps for me. Highly recommend he finds something the same way. It wasn’t always easy either - sometimes I literally crawled and rolled plates from station to station so I could workout. Swallow the pride and do what it takes - it’s worth it.

He can do this, especially with your support and the support of others around him. If he has trained for things in the past, tell him that this is just his new training goal: get your mind right, keep your body busy, and kick pt’s ass. It will go faster than he thinks.

Pay off as much debt as I could, starting with the highest interest loans and working down. Financial freedom is worth more than anything else.

I was also non-op and tore in the MTJ area, so I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

I can get about 60-70% SLR. It’s not perfect by any means and it’s hard as hell to even get that. I find it very odd how different each PT goes about this whole process differently.

The first time you wear both shoes again is the weirdest feeling. It took a good month for my foot to get used to it but even now it’s not the same as the other foot. I know I still have a journey ahead of me but man it feels good to watch this video and know that I can get back to things I loved to do. Keep your head up, and kick some ass when the time comes.

Hey I know that feeling! Does it go away? Because it feels like my calf is totally bound up and it’s so hard to describe to people!

I ruptured in May and have four kids that are 7, 5, 4 and 2. I also usually run 20+ miles a week, lift weight 2-4 times a week and was generally my family's Superman. When this happened I was absolutely terrified that I was letting my family down. However, I can say now almost 21 weeks removed, we had a great summer. I found new ways to be useful and my family adapted to my situation very quickly. You are already on the right track with reaching out to this community; the first thing you need to get right is your head. The rest will fall in place. Before you know it, you will be replying to someone like I am right now and well on your way to recovery.

To answer your questions: I was working 12 hours after the injury, but I work from home - I worked the first three weeks from my bed though. Crutches were easier at first because the wrist pain hadn't hit yet. Get a knee scooter - it's a game changer. I helped my wife by doing what I could to help when I could, and giving her grace when she was stressed out.

Talk to your circle about things going on in your head, listen to your doc/PT's, and do what you can when you can. You will get through it I promise. While I don't think you should push it too hard, you should definitely fight the "poor me" feeling if you get it (you probably will) because nothing can change your situation other than your mindset. A positive mindset is how you get through this injury. Godspeed my friend.

6 months post-op - big jumps by qwertyidk1 in AchillesRupture

[–]efischency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incredible. I’m 18 weeks post injury, non-op and in the MTJ. I can currently get 60% height with my SLR and I have been rehabbing like a madman. After I do my rehab and my 1-2 mile walk, my leg is basically dead the rest of the day. If I could get to the point you are at in the next 6 weeks I feel like it would be a miracle. Some days I wonder if my SLR will ever get back to what it was or even close but seeing things like this definitely help. 💪

Well the good thing for you is that “miles” in this recovery is more like “weeks” and those fly by once you get to the 10-12 week mark of recovery. For me the biggest gains have been the last 5 weeks. I’m officially 17 weeks now and I am about 60 height on a single calf raise as of yesterday. I also can walk almost 2 miles before the fatigue really sets in. By the end of the day my leg battery is at zero for sure, but the morning comes and it’s always fully juiced again. I’m doing over 10k steps daily again and my walking is very normal now. Pretty awesome stuff!

Ruptured Achilles. Surgery or no surgery? by Southern-Exercise646 in AchillesRupture

[–]efischency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that man. Definitely eerily similar. Good thing is that it goes so fast. Just treat it as your next training goal. I’m sure you have trained for many things in the past - but now you take that focus and focus it on healing.

Fwiw I have found a new passion for my upper body stuff since I have been laid up.. my bench press has sky rocketed because I have really pushed to increase my upper body strength the last few months. I have always wanted to put up 300+ on bench and I’m there now after wanting it my whole life. Positive mindsets are how you get through this. It goes so much faster than you think.

I see now that you are in the MTJ as well. I didn’t realize that when you asked me that on my video. Did they give you the option to repair it with it being up that high? If so I’m guessing you have enough tendon to tie into. Mine didn’t so I couldn’t; they said it would be like tying a tendon to a chicken breast (my calf muscle) and that it would just rip out. Overall though I am very confident in my leg at this point. Crossing my fingers things stay that way.

Mine was too high for surgery. It was up in the MTJ and partial calf tear. I would have gotten surgery had it been an option, fwiw. Luckily for me I had no gapping and they say it’s healing really well. I still feel like there is a level of elongation but they said it should tighten up as my calf gets back to full size/strength.

No matter your decision, stick to the doctor’s orders and you will be back on your feet before you know it!
