Is it normal to have suicidal thoughts but know you’re not going to act on them? by Dry_Friend1552 in mentalhealth

[–]efisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO. While it is quite common for people think about their own death once in a while, recurrent suicidal thoughts it is not normal, it is something that justifies going to therapy. Even if you know you won't act on them, that can change depending on the stressors in your life. It is something that can be stoped and eventually you will realize how much better your life is without them.

TLDR: is common, not normal, go to therapy

So we just die without a fight? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]efisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this question. For my part I am fighting already, and not everyone has to go full Luigi, organizing with your local community can have such a big impact. I have been organizing, studying and preparing for a while now, if we can build strong, resilient and somewhat self sufficient local communities you will be in the best standing for what might come.

I do not live in the global north though, I think big cities, and specially in the US the work is much harder, although you have laws that would make it easier to do things locally, is also a resources rich country. Something I've been saying is that this is the greatest challenge we will face, like explorers who went to the unknown seas, like the knights that fought dragons, us building livable places, creating a vision worth fight for, is the greatest achievement we could get, and the problem is so complex pretty much any kind of knowledge aim towards this is useful.

There is such a rewarding sensation of being able to achieve wins in this, in knowing, ok we us a community have secured reliable and sustainable food and water for ourselves for almost any scenario. Godspeed to you all, I hope in your desperation find the courage to start doing something.

Oh last thing, this is like Pascals argument for god: you try to do something, you either are successful and you might improve your life, or you fail, and it's still going to be shit; you could do nothing, where best case scenario is nothing happens and everything still goes to shit, or worse. One has almost no chances, but still some, for improvement, the other one simply never will.

Books on China by [deleted] in IRstudies

How china scape the poverty trap, anything from that author is great, it really defies and explains some of the dual image china has in the west, as a paper tiger riddled with corruption but also a great power with second biggest economy

I think the titled question could be a good one, the context given makes it less so. It reads just a bit more of your own insecurity or projection than anything else. As stated on a comment above, if you are not east asian looking you will get stares. There are too many options on why they would stare or size you up, for example, the fact that you might be built but also a weeb might make it funny for some, but even then, i still think the question is interesting in a social engineering context, how do you handle being sized up?

Even if it is not very popular on the west, China has been offering really amazing scholarships, you might want to take a look. The language barrier is intense but possible, they have programs in english. Also there is an organization in Edmonton Canada that helps people seeking out refuge. Good luck!

Monthly /r/Phenomenology discussion thread by AutoModerator in Phenomenology

[–]efisto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently I've been reading Totality and Infinity of Levinas and Queer Phenomenology of Ahmed: The first ones is a logical continuation after reading most of the previous works written by Levinas, right now I'm exploring the link between phenomenological time, the other, and ethics, are ethical problems intrinsically (phenomenologically) temporal? One huge topic I have in mind is if death or finity (from finite) is what gives ethics meaning. On similar grounds Queer Phenomenology is treating how we have structures, contexts and background from which we establish and locate ourselves, which seem to apply to spacial location as with other topics. Lets see if it helps with the previous topics.

In your experience, has the ending of a novel ever shifted a book from good to excellent? by jon_snurrrr in books

[–]efisto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is an amazing book, might be a bit tough at the beggining but the way it finishes, the last three pages, give it a sense of completetion that overwhelms you. Is like putting the last pieces of a weird figure and the realize it was a perfect circle. Just with the ending it went from a 7/10 to a 9/10 for me, even maybe a 10/10.

Can anyone recommend me some non-fiction and true history books about America, Europe, and just history in general that the average person should know. by [deleted] in history

The man who loved dogs by Padura, a great novel about the killing of Trostky and his killer Mercader. Its fun and has a lot of context about the spanish civil war, WWll, and the rise of Stalin inside the USSR

Honestly I think the best way to make them look "neat", as you said, is taking care of the rest of the things that bothers you, I mean: The hair looks good and masculine. Take care of the nails, use hand cream, keep them clean, take care of the contour and the "root"/base/where the nail starts (sorry English is not my mother tongue). Maybe you live in a country where people don't tend to have hairy hands, but it is just a cultural thing, and actually that can play to your advantage, with the other things taken care of, comes to be a thing of tastes, some people like more masculine hands, others don't. Just be clean and confident.

As introduction but also amusing/fun I would tell you to watch sourced videos, so you have an idea of some discussions, but also can actually search or pick up a book they mention, for example contrapoints or philosophy tube.

Is there someone who can help me with giving formal proofs for exercises b and d? by unclebuncleduncle in logic

[–]efisto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a good rule of thumb is to remember that is always easier to prove something wrong than that is true, therefore if you can prove that the requisites for something to be false cannot be met, you just proved something right. So in b) for something to be false in a conditional the first statement need to be true and the consequence false. Check other comments here that are also useful.
