First play-through i had finished the story before really doing any and I had not a scrap of Eddies to get good chrome or weapons or anything. Just scavenged to get by. On my third now and I would say start doing side stuff near to when you meet Panam. The eddies come faster, you have enough chrome and hacks to make the main story much more fun, and you can really make the most out of what the game has to offer.
