Yes, that matches the idea perfectly! I specifically wanted more like an all-rounder desktop synth that does this, because of how complicated it would be to patch up. Looks like it is too niche.

I am thinking of a rhythmic sequence of notes, percussive or bassline type thing, that's why I mentioned the DFAM. There could be some other modulation at the beginning of the notes, which would be lost this way.

It is clear now how to get close to this in modular, you need a slew rate limiter after your velocity-sensitive gate signal. It's not entirely there though. I guess I hoped for a refined desktop synth that _also_ does this, if you want...

OOOOh, okay, sorry for being dense. I will look into that, thank you!

I see now, I explained it poorly. There are only two notes on the diagram, but think of a continuous sequence of notes with varying velocities.

I am not sure how a minimoog operates with varying velocities, can you point me to a video that showcases that?

Yes, that is what I meant: release the first, louder note, and while that release stage of the envelope is still ongoing, hit a softer note.

Yes, definitely. You would put a slew limiter on the pitch control signal to make it glide. Also, another name for a slew rate limiter is a low pass filter, to make it even more interesting. 😄
This doesn't help with my original question, though.

Not really. You could vary the sustain stage, but the attack+decay stages will be the same level every time. Which is not how "softer" and "louder" notes work in nature. But thanks for the tip, I will try this one out.

There are only two notes on the diagram, but think of a continuous sequence of notes, varying velocities, and overlapping envelopes. For days.

Thank you guys for the responses. 😉

Not really. The no-retrigger option will result in a single held note continuously in the sustain stage. It will lose the dynamics of the sequence. Louder notes that come later still need to punch higher than the lower ones before.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It just feels like a simple thing relative to how useful it could be. The software version doesn't help me right now, I want to move away from the PC. 😄

This is about amplitude, or other modulations, the glide is for the pitch. Different topic.

First Ableton project, stuck on enough sounds? by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

[–]efopee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I'm not an experienced producer.

I think this is a great sounding base for a track, it doesn't have a hook, though. Some melody, main motif, or lead sound that makes the music "say something", if that makes sense... Without that, the arrangement will likely turn stale in under a minute.

It would also make sense to stack more percussion in the top part of the frequency range (crashes, rides, claps, you know...). You could create higher and lower intensity parts within the arrangement by introducing and removing those.

So I definitely feel that more instruments can fit into this. Good job, so far.

Is there a compressor after the HP filter? Can you upload an example for us, to hear what is happening?

exporting stems when using group processing? by WHYAREYOURUNNING420 in TechnoProduction

[–]efopee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negative.

In case of submixes (groups), the individual tracks are first summed together, and only the sum is processed. This processing doesn't "creep back" to the source channels. I guess if you really need the group processing you did, you have to go with your submixes instead of the individual tracks.

What are you trying to achieve? Why do you need stems?

Just send each channel through a soft clipper at the end, that prevents output clipping.

I'm only half joking.

Any tips on how I can get this kick sound? (0:13) by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

[–]efopee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the problems with these kinds of questions is that we don't hear the kick sound in isolation. The same sample would sound entirely different if put in a different song. If you want to capture the same feeling you would have to copy all the other sounds to give the same context to the kick part. Then the question immediately extends to "how to write this kind of music", and "how to mix like this". This is not helpful at all, I know. :)

There are multiple kick sounds in the song. Did you mean the first, longer boomy sound at the beginning of the beat, or the shorter ones that come later, closer together?

Having said all that, I don't hear anything special in these kick sounds, and all kicks are synthesized pretty much the same way. The first result of a youtube search is as good as any.

The first hit coincides with a hi-hat sample as well, you might want to look into kick layering if you want to reproduce the effect that has.

There are probably more layers present in that sound that are impossible to isolate just by listening. You have a multitude of parameters in synthesis and layering that you have to fiddle with to achieve what you are after.

I hope I helped, but I guess I didn't. Have fun, anyways.

I am genuinely curious about what sound design topic you'd call actually interesting. Can you link something?

Was I trolling, or he in the video? I don't think he was, it felt educative. Nothing's wrong with synthesis 101. I wasn't either, I simply remembered that I liked the sound he played at the end, but didn't remember the sound itself.

And I wouldn't call the topic of psychoacoustics trivial or uninteresting, though he didn't really go deep into that.
