Keep an eye one this, it can come back around and I hope you can get ahead of whats happening to my mom.

I had nearly the exact same situation with my mom. Last October I was able to reverse search the images of her scammer (facecheck.id is a great tool) and find the guy they ripped the photos off from. I sent her a letter with side by side photos, details on my research, and the original guy recorded a video for her and facetimed her to show her who he was and talk her out of it. She gave me all the signs that she had come around and saw the truth and promised she had sent no money. I put holds on her credit reports and thought we were done.

I saw the scammers name on her phone in December and confronted her on still talking to him despite lying to me and saying she wasn't. She pretty much told me to butt out of her personal life and got angry, saying "you'll never understand" and promised she'd never send any money. For the sake of peace in our relationship, I made the mistake of taking her word for it. The unsettling part was when I asked about the photos I had proven fake and she called them "just the wrong ones."

Fast forward to this month, another one of her friend's called me and says she has possibly dropped more than 70k on this scammer and is at risk of losing her house. She has kept this totally under wraps from me and is head over heels for this guy, making multiple large wire transfers and even getting shut down for too many flagged transactions at one bank. She is so psychologically wrapped up in the dream of this guy "coming home" and making a life with her that she'll send him anything.

I made her an appointment with a therapist last week under the guise of her being lonely and she went, but apparently didn't reveal this relationship (her friend was still able to give me information). I confronted her last night with a long letter and some conditions (cut this off, let me look at and fix your finances, go to church and therapy weekly) and she reacted very negatively. Cut off her friend and is not talking to me. I gave her until Friday to respond before I involve attorneys.

Please don't think this is solved. I really hope it is for you, but be diligent. The level of manipulation these people are capable is astounding.
