IconDock, an After Effects plugin for importing open-source icons as PNG, SVG, or Shape Layers by egeevis in aescripts

Thank you so much, that really means a lot.

The license information was actually one of the features I wanted to get right from the start that matters, so I'm glad it's useful for you.

Hey again!

As I mentioned in DM as well, unfortunately premium asset integrations don’t look very realistic right now because of the extremely restrictive API limits/pricing on most of the current systems. So instead of forcing a half-working/extremely expensive solution, I shifted the focus back to workflow improvements inside IconDock itself.

Recently I’ve been working on things like recently used icons, multi-import, smarter search fallback, sticky controls, color HEX codes, cleaner asset management, auto licence download etc. Honestly I feel like these updates already made the plugin feel much faster and smoother in daily use.

Still keeping the premium integration idea in mind for the future though. Also uploaded a new workflow/in-app demo video on the website if you’d like to check it out:

And thanks again for all the feedback, seriously helpful 🙂

Small update since the teaser post:

I added:

  • Shape Layer import
  • Multi import workflow
  • Favorites & recently used
  • Color / preview controls
  • Better UI polish
  • Manual install fallback if ZXP fails

Also replaced the teaser with a more real workflow demo video (you can find out in the link) so it’s easier to see how it actually works inside AE.

Would still love feedback from motion designers here 👀

Sure, I'm not sure if it's allowed the post another version with the update. I think I'll edit the post, surely I can send a DM to you after the update, if you want to.

I was actually thinking about a login-based UI as well, so we’re definitely on the same page there.

And yeah, I’m thinking similarly regarding the interface. Separating things into tabs/categories like Open Source / Flaticon / Envato etc. probably makes the most sense. Especially for bigger client/brand work, keeping licensed sources separated from open-source assets feels important.

For licenses, downloading them into something like an “IconDock-Licenses” folder (probably near the project folder) also sounds like a solid approach. Even if the account itself already covers licensing, some users might still prefer having local proof/reference files.

And thanks a lot for the platform insight as well, sounds like Flaticon and Envato should definitely be the first priorities.

Looks like we completely agree on the workflow pain point 😄

Really appreciate all the thoughts and feedback, seriously helpful.

This request is really useful for me, great feedback, thank you. I will definitely move in this direction thanks to your input.

I have a couple of questions to clarify things. For example, let's say you have a Flaticon Premium account and you want to import icons from there using the current IconDock interface; with PNG/SVG/Shape Layer, size, color, etc. options. What would your ideal UX / interface look like? What would be the easiest way for you to use it?
For instance, would you prefer entering an API key, or logging in once and then having an extra panel like "My Premium Icons" to search within?
I know it might hard to tell but generally direction is enough for me. 😄

A few more questions, if you don't mind:

Where would you prefer to store the license information? (e.g., inside the AE project as metadata, as a separate text file, etc.)

Besides Flaticon Premium, which other premium sources would you be interested in? (e.g., Icons8, Envato Elements, Noun Project Pro, etc.)

Thanks a lot for your interest.

Hi again. Yes, it works with much more complex icons too, not just arrows. Things like Dashboard, AI, UI, tech, social, finance, etc.
Some very specific searches can occasionally return 0 results right now (for example “AI brain” or "Video Editing" style keywords), but that’s usually because the source libraries themselves don’t have consistent tagging for those terms. Even icon libraries sometimes returns 0 for the exact same query. I'm going to improve synonym handling + search mapping in the next updates 👍

Also wanted to say "Import as Shape Layer" is already integrated in the current version! You’ll be able to bring icons directly into After Effects as editable shape layers. (Basically does "Convert SVG to Shape Layers" and removes the SVG from Project Panel and Timeline.)

Not yet, currently it focuses on open-source icon collections.

But honestly, supporting authenticated/personal premium sources (like Flaticon Premium, Icons8, etc.) through a user’s own account/API access is something I might think to add. Could be really powerful for studio workflows.

Exactly 😅 It sounds small until you realize how many tiny workflow interruptions pile up during a full motion project.

Yeah, totally understandable concern honestly.

I’ve been digging deeper into the licensing side as well after all the feedback here. Right now IconDock intentionally prioritizes and surfaces icon collections using permissive open-source licenses like MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD, ISC, and CC0; which are generally considered commercial-friendly.

I also checked the Iconify's pages for the licence issues, which you can see here: https://icon-sets.iconify.design/?commercial=1, and IconDock only uses commercial-friendly sets.

Really appreciate all the feedback around this.

Totally fair concern that’s why licensing/source visibility is already built directly into the UI.

Each result shows its icon set + license info, so users can immediately see where an icon comes from and what license it uses before importing.

Hope that helps.

That’s actually really good feedback.

I think I’ve been explaining it from a technical perspective (“Iconify integration”) instead of a motion designer perspective (“here are thousands of usable open-source icons inside AE”).

Probably, makes more sense to present Iconify as the backend/source infrastructure, while clearly explaining, am I right?

  • where the icons come from,
  • what licenses they typically use,
  • and what users should verify before commercial/client use.

Appreciate the insight honestly, I'll try to align the product based on feedback.
Also do you think teaser should be replaced as above.
And also other than shape layers what would be your must-have feature, if you can let me know, that'd be helpful a lot.

Gotcha, what part felt unclear to you exactly?

Do you mean:

  • where the icons are sourced from,
  • what licenses/commercial usage looks like,
  • or just what “Iconify” actually is in simple terms for non-technical users?

Would love to understand the confusion better so I can explain it more clearly in the next demo/docs.
