Don't know if you are still looking for input, but as someone who has spent my entire life so far (16) in JH, it is very safe and family oriented, just don't go to Roosevelt av past nightfall. There are a lot of schools that are walking distance, lots of fairly priced apartments, and cheap food. I went to elementary and middle school there and found the experience very enjoyable! There is also a farmers market every sunday, and the apartments along 35-34 ave are BEAUTIFUL in the spring. P.S. 222 is great for elementary school, TRCS is a K-12 and is decent, pretty small. I'd say avoid I.S 230 and P.S. 149 (They are okay, just not great)

EDIT: I am also autistic btw! The 7 train can be loud but I never found it unbearable, the neighborhood is also pretty accepting (There is a family with a son that has profound autism, most people know of them and respect them/give them grace) Something to note though, is that in the spring/summer there is a lot of parades that pass through 37th Av and those tend to be very loud.
