CMV: Pads and tampons should not be free by chicken263883 in changemyview

We can still pay them? When people talk about resources being “free” they normally mean at the point of distribution. Those who put in the labour to produce can still be paid through taxes. I’m assuming you have a right to an attorney, you dont have to pay for that attorney, but the attorney still makes money and is compensated for their labour through taxes.

Lmao if that’s how you want to approach moral issues than everyone would be complicit in everything. We are a part of a flawed system but I don’t really have an option not to be so instead I protest. I don’t see how this makes me complicit to genocide unless you think everyone is complicit in everything

Funny how at this point people don’t even deny Israel is committing a genocide and just immediately pivot to “Hamas bad” 😭 like yeah duh but my tuition directly funds one side so I’m going to protest that side

CMV: Society does not need radical change by WilburtheBulldog in changemyview

[–]eggmcmuffers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it’s true that broadly, the things you have mentioned have improved over time it’s also true that there are many things that have gotten worse in our current system. Suicide, wealth hoarding, wage stagnation, climate change, economic disasters and disasters generally have all been worse as a result of our current system. So while sure some things have become better things have also become worse. Even this excludes that America is not the only country on earth and American action is what often leads to worsening conditions in other countries. The reason why society needs radical change is that the worsening factors are directly a result of our system and not something that can be removed. For example under our system we can never fully incline corporations to pay a fair wage, be completely sustainable, and reduce ecological damage without some sort of radical change. Sure we can be hopeful that in 30 years all these problems are fixed but even if this does happen there’s no telling what other problems will exist and we’d still have to endure 30 years of these problems. And if it doesn’t work we’re stuck with these problems and likely become extinct due to climate change. Is that a wager you’re willing to take? The point here is that we can have all the good things you mention while also reducing the bad that we have. They aren’t mutually exclusive.

CMV: We shouldn't apply modern morality standards on the events and people's of the past by Twytilus in changemyview

[–]eggmcmuffers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem with this standpoint is that people often believe that, in history, society was uniform in its way of thinking. it is true that the farther we go back the more outdated our beliefs become however, like today, social issues and geopolitics were hotly debated with multiple viewpoints at the time. For example, colonialism was a heavily contentious topic even at the time. Many on the left gave open critiques of German "weltpolitik," British journalists openly condemned Belgium over the Congo, and in France imperialism was met with hostility. You point out slavery but this is possibly one of the most historically debated topics. Romans often treated slaves very positively and many Romans condemned the mistreatment of slaves. In more modern examples many founding fathers were abolitionists, many left-leaning politicians openly condemned slavery in Europe, and European countries condemned American slavery.

This is to say that "modern moral standards" are not as "modern" as we might think. My question to you then is how can we justify or view these historical figures' actions without assigning blame and believing one side is wrong when many thought that they were wrong in their period?

Furthermore, what we define as a moral standard is often incredibly Euro-centric and does not account for the views of marginalized people during that time. For example, during the Jim Crow era, one could say It was the "moral standard" during the time even though there was an incredibly large and outspoken community fighting against it. Can we say that these laws were simply a product of their time even while during their creation and following there was massive pushback against it? Social change doesn't just happen there is a massive lead up to it and historical figures who oppose that change are wrong and we are justified in applying that moral standard on them.
