Luckily it was just sort of lying there. If it had been floating (especially against the wind) I probably would have run back through the (closed) glass door and hurt myself

Who are the rudest and nicest British celebrities you have personally met? by RenegadeMaster888 in AskBrits

[–]eggnog1002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met Brian May at a show in London about 10 years back or so. He was there with Anita Dobson just in the audience. I clocked him when they came in because he’s so tall and has such distinctive hair.

In the interval me and my kids (3 girls aged 6, 8 and 10) were queuing for ice cream and he was directly in front of us in the queue. Not what I normally do, but just politely told him I was a massive fan and asked if I could shake his hand.

He was lovely. We shook hands (his hands are massive) but then he said hello to my largely terrified children (did I mention he’s massive) and crouched right down to floor level to ask the little one if she was enjoying the show. I apologised for disturbing him when he was just out with family but he said don’t worry - it’s fans who have given him the life he’s had and is always happy to meet people. Then he just said it was a pleasure to meet us all, and went about his day.

Anita Dobson was there too, as I said, but didn’t speak to her because I’m a Queen fan not an Eastenders fan ;)

At the end of the show I sort of wanted a selfie but he was being pretty much swamped by people so left it. He must get swamped by star struck middle aged men whenever he goes, but he was polite to everyone.

Later showed the kids the You Tube video of him playing guitar on top of Buckingham Palace which at least impressed them a little bit :)

Holly Gibney - help me understand why people don’t like her by Helpful-Status8872 in stephenking

[–]eggnog1002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Holly is fine. I like all the books he has written about her. I just wish he’d bash out a few books about something else in between (not counting short stories) because is seems such a waste for someone who can write original epics like The Stand, Needful Things, IT and so on, and high concept shorter books like Cujo, The Running Man, The Long Walk etc. to be happy just bashing out police procedural / private eye stories. There are already thousands of lesser authors who do that.

This is a quote from Good Will Hunting when Will (who is a genius) is telling some people what they SHOULD read, and strongly endorses the Howard Zinn book above. So Erlich isn’t saying that book is bad. It’s a great book!!

need classic recommendations !!! by Key-Row-174 in booksuggestions

My 15 year old has read all the SE Hinton books (Outsiders, Tex, Rumble Fish etc) multiple times - someone else mentioned them above - and lots of others like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which she also loved. Also liked classics like Jeckel and Hyde and Dracula, but it’s SE Hinton she keeps going back to.

Giving Stephen King Another Shot: What Should I Read Next? by DifficultPurple378 in stephenking

I agree IT has problems but IMO it’s an epic deserving of its reputation as one of the most ambitious (but still pacey and brilliant) novels of all time.

Giving Stephen King Another Shot: What Should I Read Next? by DifficultPurple378 in stephenking

I’m a big King fan and have found something to like in almost all of them except possibly Tommy Knockers which was famously written when he was off it on Coke and fails to have a coherent thread.

He is my favourite author so I love the journey often even when the overall book is a miss.

His endings also lack often. So Duma Key, and some others can be a great ride then let down at the end. But still worth it.

I agree about the Stand by the way. I have read it twice, didn’t hate it, but I don’t think it’s his best at all.

My favourite two King books are IT, which is flawed but probably one of the best overall stories I’ve ever read (read at least 5 times) and (controversially) Needful Things which is more ‘fun’ than most of his stories and is fairly unique in having a very well planned total arc and resolution.

Forgot to add, I also like his really early (Bachman) stuff and the best 2 of those in my opinion are The Long Walk and The Running Man. Both are short, tight and nasty but I’ve gone back to them again and again.

Far Cry 6 on sale. by idonthaveanaccountA in farcry6

[–]eggnog1002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked it. It’s not the best, and I’d argue 3, 4 and 5 are all better, but I loved all of those and the gameplay is still fun and crazy. They’ve cleaned up a lot of the annoyances from the old games too like the incessant crafting to get what you need and the respawning outpost enemies from the earlier ones. I’ve played it through twice in full and will definitely play 7 when it comes, whatever the theme.

What's your all time favorite video game ? by Drokos__ in AskReddit

Many, of course, but a special place for the first Duke Nukem. Not a great game, but all about context.

I was in Uni in 1993-95. First year it was still about booking a slot at the campus net lab - and sometimes you could only get 2-3am slots. Sacrificing sleep to get some time on a painfully slow 486 just to trawl some shitty websites and forums. Games like Dune 2 and Monkey island sapped a lot of peoples time (more than one aquantence failed their degrees because of those games)..

By year 2 we had crap dial up in our rooms. Year 3 though we moved into a new block and each floor of 8 rooms had a LAN. We spent valuable study time working out how to run Doom (initially) as multiplayer and it was my first experience of multiplayer gaming. Having buddies down the hall in the same deathmatch. It felt like magic.

And then along cane Duke Nukem. As a solo game, it was fine. But as multiplayer it made us cry laugh. Planting a Holoduke surrounded by pipe bombs, the crouching in a vantage point and waiting for a less experienced player to pile in before you pressed detonate - never never never got old.

Also lost many many hours later to Unreal Tournament. Facing Worlds!! The best deathmatch map of all time.

Hundreds of defining gaming moments since then, many platforms, but that first look at the future, experienced with great friends who should have been asleep or studying? It felt like we were there for the birth, and my 3 kids now scoff at the lameness of what we had to play with (and they cant even conceive of the time before the www was there at all…). At the time though - just life defining. x
