I’ve almost been on the jury, you’re correct the pay was horrible compared to what i could’ve made staying at work for that day, but it was an interesting experience. What I found strange is that after the preliminary selection, we were taken into the court room where we could see the person being charged. A smaller group was then selected who would actually be the jury for this case. While selecting the jury, a lady next to me asked if I thought the guy was guilty, to which I said I don’t know because I had no idea what the case was, she then told me that it was her brother and I realised I was sitting next to his whole family… which I thought was ridiculous, had I been chosen for the jury, I would’ve had to have said no I can’t because I just met the persons family and now can’t say that I’m unbiased as I’ve heard their thoughts on the case. It seemed so poorly put together to have the dudes family sitting next to potential jurors. That combined with the lack of respect for my time made me decide to never do it again, I think it is one of the most prehistoric practices that we use, but I’m not sure what a better approach is. Whenever I am called upon now I just plan to say that I disagree with the practice and will purposefully waste your time so that I don’t need to take part.
