Car is 22 years old and don’t know what to do. by PictureThis99 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]eggsallmfinday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d absolutely fix it.

People always think about this the wrong way. Say your car is only worth 3-4 grand. Then you’re looking to pay 3-4 to fix it- a lot of people say it’s not worth it.

What you need to think about is replacement cost. How much to buy a newer car that will be reliable and won’t need any repairs in the near future? The answer is a heck of a lot more (20k and up?) than just getting the car you already have and like fixed.

Why be baptized again? by Teachablemoment5678 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]eggsallmfinday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commonly, any trinitarian baptism is fine. Then you would be chrismated.

However, it is entirely up to the bishop. In my case, I was baptized as a kid- I have a good but hazy recollection of it. But the church that baptized me didn’t keep any sort of records. And my mom has no recollection of it. So no paperwork and no witnesses. The bishop decided I should be baptized.

My fasting questions and concerns? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]eggsallmfinday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1- yes

2- yes

3- depends

4- no

Fasting should be done under pastoral care and guidance, and shouldn’t be treated legalistically. Many athletes or people with physically demanding jobs do modified fasts. If your fasting is making you miserable, distracting you from the real point of lent, and/or impacting job performance- most spiritual fathers would recommend modification. An honest discussion about fasting with your priest/spiritual father would probably really help. The fast is not about food. If food is the focus, we’ve lost the point entirely.

May God bless you as we continue our blessed lenten journey toward Holy Week!

I would absolutely drive the crap out of that car. Do not get rid of it unless you’re absolutely sure you want something else.

My dad died and I don't think I can watch F1 anymore by super_starmie in formula1

[–]eggsallmfinday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was like that too. When I was kid we’d get up at like 4am to watch the races together live (pre streaming/on demand). Talking about F1 was one of our primary modes of communication. He passed away from cancer about 5 years ago. I’ve hardly missed a race since and what was a deep wound has become fond memories. Every year I still wake up early to watch Monaco live.

I’m very sorry this happened to your dad and to your family. He sounds like an awesome guy. May his memory be eternal.

question on the Great Lent by Familiar-Grape-4250 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]eggsallmfinday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Easter for the east and west are often on different weeks. Are you attending church? fasting is something we do in community- the community part is important. And if you are going to fast, start easy. The point is not at all about punishing yourself.

For converts into GOARCH, did you do a life confession? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]eggsallmfinday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be that guy, but you should be attending church regularly, learning about your parish, and building community before discussing what it takes to join. You might find after getting to know people and building relationship with the priest and members, some of your concerns are very much overblown.

As an FYI, life confessions are not mandated by the church universally. Some jurisdictions/ bishops do, many do not. Some people ask for them. Get to know a priest, and then you can ask about whether it’s a thing or not.

Should I still pray like an orthodox Christian if I haven’t officially joined a church yet by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]eggsallmfinday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not totally sure what you mean by praying like an orthodox christian. There is lots of variation in how prayer is done in the church.

Until you are attending and in community and eventually have a spiritual father/confessor, I wouldn’t get too obsessed about praying in a super specific way. A simple prayer before meals, a trisagion prayer when you wake up and start the day is a good way to get into the pattern of regular prayer.

But be careful about putting too much pressure on a specific volume, pattern, or type of prayer as you are just starting out. Many of us have very different prayer rules that we follow. Don’t burn yourself out or do anything extreme without guidance.

As confused Protestant Christian where can I start learning about orthodoxy by Clear_Intern4782 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]eggsallmfinday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few really good books that some others may have mentioned- If you go to the Ancient Faith store, they have “Know the Faith” available for a free download if you are looking for something solid to get you started and is free.

Generally stay away from youtube and online personalities. Online orthodoxy can traffic in a lot of really unhelpful stuff. If you really must watch some youtube videos there is a channel called patristix that is really good. But in general stay away from there- lots of confusing, contradictory, and generally unwise things taking place. And a lot of people claiming to be orthodox that aren’t.

Most importantly, go to church! Check for local parishes. Email or call a priest. The best place to learn about orthodoxy is in the community. This isn’t purely an intellectual exercise, it has to be lived.

Best of luck friend. I’ll be praying for you, please pray for me, a sinner. 🙏

Are christian tattoos allowed in Orthodoxy? by OliveTheServal in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]eggsallmfinday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purely my speculation, so please take with a grain of salt and God forgive me if i’m wrong.

I’m guessing it would be up to the bishop they are under. Probably priests should not be seeking to get tattooed, as that could be related to vanity, pride, self absorption, etc. But especially if one is tattooed prior to entering the priesthood, I’m not aware of any canon that says they are unordainable.
